Salams everyone,

Let me do a bit of an opinion check with everyone out there.  Yesturday I was at my uni and tried to see a doctor to get a note for a late assignment to give to my prof.  There was only one doctor who said it was better if I came back tomorrow.  I asked the receptionists why the doctor would say this and they just said he didn't deal with the issues that I had.  My instict was to ask if the doctor was Jewish and he was.  The receptionist told me that he didn't see female patients.

Okay sisters, how would this make you feel?  I mean as a Canadian citizen I am guaranteed free national health care, but I was turned away because of my gender.  Let's me serious for a minute what kind of doctor would work at a uni where patients are bound to come in with diverse medical conditions.  Why wouldn't such a pious doctor specialize in men's health???

Needless to say I was a little angry yesturday would anybody else out there feel the same way?

Wassalam

Ok, I'm kinda confused. You wanted to see a male doctor but you're a female? If he's a practicing Jew then maybe he restricts himself to members of the same sex. Muslim doctors do.

I always see a female doctor because of the gender. I'm not really sure what your issue. Maybe you can explain it in more detail? I mean if he was the only doctor I could see and I was about to die that would be different. I'm just really confused.

Salaams sis,

Just needed a note for a prof, that's it.  I would never allow myself to be examined by a male doc either.  A university campus should be filled with academics and free from prejudice.  My point is that this doctor should be on our campus.  Think of all the students who have been turned away because this doctor wouldn't see a woman.  My reasoning is more for non-Muslims.  I mean think of students who may have to deal with issues like STDs and procreation, but they can't get services because the doctor on duty is a Jew.  My university observes Christian and Jewish holidays.  I'm tired of Jews receiving preferential treatment over every other minority.

Hope that's a little clearer.

thats his perogative. as a doctor he can choose who he wants to treat. i work with doctors who make choices like that and its not necesarily due to any religious purpose. and even if it was, its still their perogative.

and all of the male doctors will not see a female patient alone. has to be a female nurse present.  you just dont know the problems that some women can create for a doctor.

and as far as just getting a note,  some doctors wont do that either unless they actually see you  to understand what was the problem that caused you to need a note anyway.  if theyre a good doctor that cares about their medical license, they will not just sign off on a note without checking the patient out first.

sorry, just seeing things from the medical side.

The point is that academics must be secular.  Cannot learn having someone else's religious beliefs inforced upon you.

but you asked if he were jewish. she did not tell you that he did not see you because of this. this may not be the reason

IA with amatallah. He probably didn't sign the note because he didn't actually see you. That's actually a good thing because it means he cares and isn't just some quack who signs off on things. I don't think it had anything to do with his being Jewish.
