What were their excessive questions?
What was the disagreement?
Who were the prophets being referred to here?

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"A good friend and a bad friend are like a perfume-seller and a blacksmith:

The perfume-seller might give you some perfume as a gift, or you might buy some from him, or at least you might smell its fragrance.

As for the blacksmith, he might singe your clothes, and at the very least you will breathe in the fumes of the furnace."

(Hadith in Sahih Al-Bukhari)

Hi Al-Cordoby. I think I should leave here again.

I'll continue to read this thread. I would find it helpful if you could connect these sayings to some commentary. I don't seem to be understanding them properly.

This hadith is about the importance of choosing good friends.

The Prophet, peace be upon him, gives the example of a good friend like a person who sells perfume: you will always benefit from him.

Either he gives you perfume as a gift, or you buy perfume which you use and benefit from, or the worst case scenario being in his shop you would smell nice smells.

The opposite case is that of a bad friend who has bad influence on others (think for example of a drug addict who tries to make his friends fall into addiction).

Being with this type of friend will always be harmful
, either directly, or indirectly, and his similitude is like that of a blacksmith, as being close to him risks either burning your clothes, or the worst case scenario smelling a bad smell.

Wisdom of the Hadith & Lessons Learned:

Be careful who you take as close friends, and do your best to choose those whose company would benefit you in this life and in the Hereafter.

Thanks, Al-Cordoby. I'm just confused by the choice of perfume, something that is a bit of a luxury item, and iron, something which is a necessity. Blacksmithing is a messy but necessary job and it's always good to have friends who can get the important jobs done. I'm pretty sure that Muhammad, if he had had to choose having only one or the other in Madinah, he would've chosen to retain the blacksmith. Did/does perfume have a special place in the Arab culture?

Both are important, NB

The illustration in these 2 examples is on the impact each could have on an individual, not the two trades themselves.

When you choose a close friend, choose one that would benefit you, not one who may cause you harm. That is the main wisdom of the hadith.

And we see that all the time with the youth:

If they choose to hang out with friends who use drugs, it is likely they themselves will get hooked on drugs.

Get the point?

I think I've mentioned before that the Talmud says to say one hundred blessings every day.

I see so much more value in this sentiment. You are being told to be aware of what is good in the world, rather than dwelling on its minor faults. I find it hard to imagine any joy in the life of someone who makes repentance a hundred times every day. The Jewish idea of setting aside a full day, Yom Kippur, seems better to me.

Do Muslims consider Muhammad to have lived a joyous life, or isn't that a goal of Islam?
