Moved as per request... Amr Khalid's lecture site... This link is especially useful for new reverts of Protestant background.  His style of speach is enthusastic, very comfortable and probably familiar...   Its not a substitute for study of your own but it is a nice place to start.  If you understand Arabic then his streaming videos are available on the site.  If you don't speak arabic the lectures have been translated into several languages.  The English translation is very well done.

Assalamo Alaikom:

Tazkiyah, or purification of the soul, is a very important aspect of Islam, as Allah commands Muslims in The Qur'an to purify their souls, and He informed us that it is the way of success, as in Chapter 91 (Al-Shams)

7.   And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it

8.   And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness,

9.   He has succeeded who purifies it,

10.  And he has failed who instills it [with corruption]. (91:7-10)

New Muslims often start with a high level of spirituality in the first weeks after saying the Shahada, and to maintain that level and increase in faith it's important to increase doing good deeds, and at the same time be aware of the importance of Tazkiyah.

Here is a first list of useful articles on Tazkiyah (based on The Qur'an and Sunnah) from the islaam.com web site:

All the best, Wassalamo Alaikom

"Islam in Focus" is an interesting general book on Islam, written by Hammudah Abdalati more than 30 years ago.

This is an extract from the author's preface:

QUOTE

The future of Islam is the future of humanity, and if humanity has any future - which I believe it has - there is a great and bright future in store for Islam. The spiritual battle which the Muslims are fighting today is not a losing battle, although the progress appears to be slow. If the Muslims, for any reason, lose their spiritual battle, humanity will suffer irreparable losses.

The significance of this preface, then, is to draw a realistic picture of the situation which is confronting the Muslims of the New World. It is to warn parents and children alike of the dangers that are approaching and of the losses that must be prevented. Moreover, it is to remind all those who are genuinely interested in the spiritual well-being of humanity that they have to be alert and take a fresh attitude toward humanity and its problems.

UNQUOTE

The five chapters of the book are titled:

1- The Ideological Foundation of Islam

2- The Basic Concept of Islam

3- The Application of Faith

4- Application of Islam to Daily Life

5- Distortions about Islam

Think Win-Win for a better world for all...
