Fear, Respect and Love of Allah Must be Together

Some people assume that love of Allah is enough for those who seek to live according to religious morals and earn Allah’s good pleasure. However, Allah informs us that His servants who possess superior morals and love Him also have a genuine fear and respect for Him.

Every person who acknowledges Allah with all of His attributes and appreciates His greatness, as well as those who have intelligence and a conscience, will fear and respect Allah to the utmost degree. Allah enables such servants, who also abide by His will, to distinguish good from evil and to observe the limits that He has set for humanity.

Love is to see what is good and beautiful in everything. It is to learn from everything, to see the gifts of God and the generosity of God in everything. It is to be thankful for all God's bounties.

This is the first step on the road to the love of God. This is just a seed of love. In time, the seed will grow and become a tree and bear fruit. Then, whoever tastes that fruit will know what real love is. It will be difficult for those who have tasted to tell of it to those who have not.

Those who Love Allah Also Love Believers

Those who are loved by Allah are also loved by believers; those who befriend Allah also befriend the believers; those who earn His good pleasure also earn that of the believers; and whoever loves Allah should also love His servants.

Those pious believers who follow His path are among those people most loved by Allah. For this reason, believers love one another and are very concerned about each other. Many verses relate the believers’ love for one another, their closeness to each other, their mercy to each other and their attachment to each other.

One of the greatest causes that bring about one's love for Allah is increasing one's remembrance of Allah.

Whenever a person loves someone, he remembers them more often. And it is through the remembrance of Allah that the hearts find tranquility.

In fact, one of the signs of having love for Allah is the constant remembrance of Allah by one's heart and tongue

Morality and good works are not ends in themselves, but the fruits of a faith, of a soul that perpetually remembers its Creator with love and awe.

It is such perpetual remembrance that is the goal of Islam, not a mechanical following of its laws.

Continuous Performance of Righteous Deeds

Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said:

"The best loved deeds to Allah are the ones that are continuous even if they are not very many."

Allah loves Muhsineen [2:195, 3:134, 3:148, 5:13, 5:93] [Those who do good (to others); who spend (benevolently) in the cause of Allah (2:195) in favorable as well as in adverse circumstances; who divert and sublimate their anger and potentially virulent emotions to creative energy and become a source of tranquility and comfort to people;

who quickly correct any wrong or indecency that has occurred from them, remember Allah,  protect themselves from trailing behind in dignity and refrain from willfully persisting in error. [3:134-135];

 who pardon and forbear [5:13];

who do not spread corruption on earth  [7:56];

who strive hard for Him [29:69];

who establish As-Salaat [remembering Him (20:14, 62:9) all the time (70:23) and at appointed times (4:103, 62:9),

and follow His Guidance in all the affairs] and keep the resources, that He has bestowed upon them, open [for the welfare of humanity]. (2:177, 9:44, 39:33, 92:17-20) [31:3-4];

 who are the believing servants of Allah [37:110-111, 37:121-122, 37:131-132];

 who sleep but little at night (reflecting on His Commands and on ways to implement His Commands) and heartily seek to be guarded against imperfections (51:16-18)].

Love: A Blessing Bestowed by Allah for Believers

Allah creates opportunities for people to gain His good pleasure. Our Lord gives believers faith, an understanding to live their lives with consciousness, a mind to understand the Qur’an and power of love. These traits are ways to deepen one’s love of Allah, to appreciate Allah’s superior morality clearly and scrupulously.

Love of Allah is a love that includes all loves and the basis of all types of love. It is a love, which gives the biggest pleasure and happiness to the soul. The only way to love Muslims, beautiful creatures and all other beauties, created by Allah, is the unrequited love felt for Allah

Ten Causes Leading to Allah's Love

Ibn al-Qaiyim mentioned ten causes that result in Allah's love for His slave and the slave's love for his Lord.

These ten causes are detailed in this article and include:

Continual remembrance of Allah under all circumstances
, with one's tongue, heart and actions. The extent of one's love of Allah is determined by this. ...

Fourth, giving precedence to what He loves over what you love when you are overtaken by your desires. ...

Observing Allah's kindness, goodness and bounties, both hidden and open.

Pondering over the creation of the heavens and the earth

One of the great causes that leads to having love of Allah is the specific knowledge that comes about through pondering over the creation of the heavens and the earth and what Allah has created.

In the Quran, there is much mention of the signs of Allah that indicate His Greatness, Power, Majesty, Perfection, Eminence, Compassion, Mercy, Strength, Subjugation and other of His beautiful Names and exalted Attributes.

Whenever one's knowledge of Allah is strengthened, one's love for Him is also strengthened and one's love for obeying Him is also strengthened. He will then experience the pleasure of worship, whether it be in prayer, remembrance or other forms of worship.

Allah is The Most Loving (Al-Wadoud)

The word wadoud is derived from waddahu which means to love a person.

Allah says, On those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, will God Most Gracious bestow Love. (MARYAM, 96), where the love mentioned in this verse is His Love to them and their love to Him.

He also says, Thou will not find any people who believe in God and the Last Day, loving those who resist God and His Apostle even though they were their fathers or their sons, or their brothers or their kindred. (MUJADILA, 22), And He is the Oft-Forgiving, Full of loving-kindness.” (BURUJ, 14).

The Love of Allah to His creatures is great; He bestows His Love on His creatures by making them know Him, His love to the sinners is mantled in forgiveness, and His Love to all the creatures is by the donation of their sustenance; He loves the believers who love Him and He is pleased with those who work deeds of righteousness so He praises them for their deeds.

The name AL-WADOUD, The Most LOVING, is near in meaning to Al-Raheem, the Most Merciful, yet mercy is the bestowing of goodness and blessings to the one Allah has mercy on. The Divine Acts of the Most Merciful are directed and granted to the feeble and the necessitous; on the other hand, the Divine Acts of the Most LOVING do not suggest that; what Allah, Glory be to Him, bestows and donates is the result of His Love. He says, ..soon will God produce a people whom He will love as they will love Him. (MA’IDA, 57).

Allah, the Most LOVING, loves them first, then He grants them the ability to love Him. “When Allah loves one of His creatures, He calls Gabriel and says, “O Gabriel! I do love this person, so love him!” so Gabriel loves that person, then he says to the Exalted Assembly, “Behold! Allah, Praise and Glory be to Him, loves this person, so do love that person!” So the Exalted Assembly loves him, then his love will enter the heart of everybody on earth” (HADITH). Allah, Glory be to Him, says, ..for my Lord is indeed full of mercy and loving-kindness. (HUD, 90).

Glory be to the Most LOVING, Whose grants are lavish and great, Praise and Glory be to Him, He is Allah.

Allah loves a believer who is patient, and who puts his/her trust in Him:

"Certainly, Allah loves those who put their trust (in Him)."
