The Seven Qualities:

1. Sincerity 2. Facilitating Worship 3. Awareness of shortcomings 4. Having interlocutors 5. Repentance 6. A strong support group 7. Indifference to the cult of consumption and opulence

Finding the Path: The Qualities of the Friends of Allah/Establishing the Obligations -Part Three

In this short talk, I address the second quality of Allah's friends: Love, noting that there are ten signs of Allah's love in our lives:

1. Concern for faith 2. Repentance 3. Living Allah's names and blessings 4. Being Tested 5. Remembrance of Allah 6. Living for a higher purpose 7. Justice and a commitment to the weak 8. Service 9. Focusing on what brings His love 10. Loving others.

How to improve our love for others:

Enlist all of your faculties
Move in physically, verbally, and emotionally
Pray for discernment
Ask caring questions
Think deliberately
Help in meaningful ways
Yield your convenience, pride, and resources.

The Promise of Adversity: Al-Munfarija Part One

Pain, trauma and success and pleasure are all great mysteries that lay beyond the purview of us all. What is an islamic attitude to these things, and how do we navigate them?

Faith allows us to see wholeness and healing in our broken and fractured selves: to find value in our flaws and inspiration in our shortcomings.

Ibn al-Nahawi's poem, "The reliever" address pain, suffering and trauma in three ways:

1. Islam's attitude towards them
2. Islamic beliefs around them
3. Action items a person can use to shoulder them In this lesson,

I cover the life of the writer, Ibn al-Nahawi: his upbringing, his influences and the tremendous challenges he face that compelled him to compose this work; as well as the first few lines of his poem.

Finding the Path Part Four: Allah's Love and Disruptive Moments

The great secret of creation rests in front our eyes. Yet, with so much "going on" we may fail to see it. God's love is manifest in disruptive moments - success or trials, that remind us to look deeper and see with ihsān that secret: that all things are powered by one God; Allāh who is the only one worthy of worship.

How can we understand Allah's love and what are its signs?

Al-Munfarija Part Two: Faith, Pain and Resilience

The opening of al-Munfarijah addresses concepts around trial and trauma. The second part moves into understanding faith:

God is not obligated to do what we want, but we are taught to submit to Him during the good and the bad, the highs and the lows. To do that, we need to trust Him, and to trust Him, we need to know Him.

Al-Munfarija Part Three: Awareness & Healing

The key to happiness and settled souls is the awareness that all things, great or small come from Allah, the All-Wise, the All-Knowing, while working hard to submit to Him: that nothing moves, and nothing settles, that no joy occurs, nor tear falls save by Allah's command. Thus, the source of unhappiness is to trust in our own agency, while forgetting our Lord, or to give up doing good, denying Him or using His knowledge as an excuse. "Allah created you and what you do!" Qur'an. "Say, 'Do good' Allah will is aware of deeds."

In this section of the poem, Ibn Nahawi begins to examine, unpack and present Islam's position on God's will, power and decree. The outcome is a sense of impoverishment to Allah with a trust and relief that submitting to Him is safe and beneficial.

Anchored Activism: Principles for Faith And Advocacy

What are important principles that ensure faith and activism align with prophetic values: Is activism aligned with religious directives? Is religious commitment empathetic and brave in its advocacy? Neglecting either one is a failure to full-fill our duty as a prophetic community.
