Tennessee Muslims Raise Funds for Govt’ Employees

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee – A Muslim nonprofit has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for families affected by the shutdown, Knox News reported.

Tarek El-Messidi, the founder of Celebrate Mercy, said he was inspired to start the campaign after “watching the news and seeing so many sad stories of federal workers and federal contractors who were really distressed about not getting paid.”

“Just the sheer number of people who are not getting paid really made me think that the Muslim community should be doing its part,” El-Messidi said.

Founded by Knoxville native and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville graduate El-Messidi, CelebrateMercy is a nonprofit that teaches about the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through campaigns, social media, webinars, and conferences.

Along with the nonprofit charity Penny Appeal USA, they launched the crowdfunding campaign for federal workers who have not been paid during the shutdown, called “Muslims Unite to Provide Shutdown Relief.”...

For 16 Years, Sacramento Muslims Have Served Meals to Less Fortunate

SACRAMENTO – Muslims in Lodi, Sacramento have been serving food to the needy, for the past 16 years, on the first Sunday each month, helping the community and showing their true faith, Lodi News reported on February 5.

“As members of this community it’s our responsibility to help the people in our community because we’re all citizens of Lodi,” said Taj Khan, the president of Lodi California Islamic Center Mosque.

The idea of the free meal service was first suggested by Khan 16 years ago.

Over the past years, volunteers from the Muslim community helped him in hosting a meal at the Salvation Army to show how the Islamic Shari’ah demands the believers to give back to their community.

This past Sunday, Taj and Naseem Khan, the director of Lodi California Islamic Center Mosque’s Janazah Committee, in addition to Taj’s friend, Ehtesham Qamar, met to start cooking and preparing the food of each month...

Why the only future worth building includes everyone | Pope Francis

A single individual is enough for hope to exist, and that individual can be you, says His Holiness Pope Francis in this searing TED Talk delivered directly from Vatican City. In a hopeful message to people of all faiths, to those who have power as well as those who don't, the spiritual leader provides illuminating commentary on the world as we currently find it and calls for equality, solidarity and tenderness to prevail. "Let us help each other, all together, to remember that the 'other' is not a statistic, or a number," he says. "We all need each other."

UK Mosque Launches Food Bank for the Needy

BANBURY – Families in need of food in Banbury, the UK will have a stable source of goodwill to rely on with the city’s mosque launching its own charity food bank, Banbury Guardian reported on February 27.

“We just really want to help and the mosque will do whatever it can to support the people of Banbury,” founder Yasmin Khaduji said.

Khaduji set up the community fridge at the mosque to support those in need and to use the non-perishable food they receive from supermarkets.

In a clever step, the mosque teamed up with Citizens’ Advice to start running the weekly foodbank from Saturday, a day the other food banks aren’t open, in order to compensate the needy people...

To Counter Rising Hate: UK Muslims Visit Churches, Synagogues and Temples

LONDON – Muslim leaders in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland visited churches, synagogues, Hindu and Sikh temples in interfaith solidarity amid rising hate crime.

“It was a privilege to visit the West London Synagogue today. It was great to hear about the similarity of the Jewish religious services to my own faith as a Muslim, alongside the synagogue’s active outreach programs for refugees and the homeless,” Harun Khan, Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain said in a statement published on MCB website.

“I strongly encourage more of my fellow Muslims to visit other faith institutions as this will only make our bonds stronger as we have more in common than what divides us.”

Leaders from the Muslim Council of Britain, Muslim Council of Wales, Muslim Council of Scotland and Belfast Islamic Centre made the visits to Churches, Synagogues, Mandirs, and Gurdwaras to share common experiences with their Christian, Jewish, Hindu and Sikh neighbors.

The visits come in the week where over 250 mosques across the UK will be opening their doors to the public on #VisitMyMosque day on Sunday 3 March...
