Muslim, Jewish Sisterhood Help the Needy in New Jersey

PLAINFIELD – A local Muslim and Jewish sisterhood have come together to serve a meal at the Muslim community soup kitchen in Plainfield, New Jersey.

“These are my sisters now,” Mallary Saltzman of Westfield told Tap Into Westfield.

Saltzman is a member of the Union County chapter of the Sisterhood of the Salaam Shalom.

The Sisterhood of the Salaam Shalom grows “relationships between Muslim and Jewish women to build bridges and fight hate, negative stereotyping and prejudice.”

Members meet monthly to learn about the teachings of the Qur’an and the Torah.

Thanks to these regular meetings, the members of the group have discovered many similarities between the two faiths...

Austin Nonprofit Provides Muslim Community Space

AUSTIN, Texas – A new nonprofit launched Sunday to provide an inclusive space for Muslims in Austin, Texas, planning to host a variety of faith-based, service-based, and social programs.

“We really need to think about the community and the spectrum of American Muslims living here,” Muslim Space executive director Shadia Igram told The Daily Texan.

“We want to create a space with a sense of fluidity, that you can be in and out of the Muslim space and you don’t feel like you have to change yourself … We are not trying to compete with a mosque or draw folks away, we are just simply trying to create a complementary institution.”

The new group will offer community potlucks and game nights, as well as Qur’an classes taught by community members rather than scholars.

It also aims at addressing the lack of gender inclusivity inside mosques, resulting from different cultural practices rather than religious teachings.

“One of the issues I have personally is that there’s a separation between men and women (in mosques) with some sort of wall or curtain,” advertising sophomore Yasmeen Aossey said.

“I feel like it’s more of a cultural thing that we have to do that, and a lot of the cultural aspects are being brought in the mosque which should only be just religion-based — it should not have any cultural influences on it.”

Computer science freshman Aafia Ahmad said Muslim Space would be a good way for her to meet the Muslim community outside of UT.

“I like the Muslim Student Association, but I think [Muslim Space] is also a good way to get involved and meet people throughout Austin and not just UT,” Ahmad said...

Preston Muslims Spread Christmas Joy

PRESTON, Lancashire – Breaking barriers in their society, a Muslim organization in Preston, Lancashire, has visited children in a hospital and elderly people’s care home to hand out gifts and spread the festive joy of the holiday season.

“This is important especially around Christmas. There are so many issues with loneliness at the moment. For instance, families might only be able to visit their elderly relatives once a week,” Nadeem Ashfaq from the Light Foundation told Lancashire Post on Wednesday.

“All these people are part of our wider family in the Preston community.”

The Light Foundation, a leading group within Preston’s Muslim community, visited the children’s ward at Royal Preston Hospital and elderly residents at Finney House care home in Flintoff Way, handing out gifts to both.

Nadeem, a former Corpus Christi Catholic College student, added: “These types of visits are important for anyone and everyone to take seriously.

“Our visit felt important to us as Muslims, in breaking down these misconceptions that people may have, that we are a closed community, who only look after themselves.’’

The effort was welcomed and appreciated by Preston NHS (UK’s National Health Service) officials...

Blackburn Muslims, Christians Build Relationships

BLACKBURN – Blackburn Muslims paid a special visit to St Silas C of E church ahead of the Christmas season, amid efforts to “build a stronger faith relationship and bring neighbors from both communities together.”

“At a time when communities appear to be divided, hate crime and lack of social inclusion is increasing, the Beardwood Muslim and Christian communities of St Silas and Sacred Heart have once again come together to celebrate their faith similarities and to respect their differences,” Imam Fazal Hassan, Muslim Chaplain Royal Blackburn Hospital, told Lancashire Telegraph.

“This local interfaith gathering saw over 100 people from both the Christian and Muslim communities come together to honor the life achievements and sacrifices of Mother Mary...

Hijabi Muslim, Lutheran Pastor Tour US to Fight Islamophobia

WASHINGTON, DC – A hijab-wearing Muslim woman with a Harvard law degree has joined a white Lutheran pastor in developing a unique friendship, touring different American cities to fight Islamophobia and division.

“I am so extremely bothered by what I see happening around us today, the growing divisiveness, polarization, hate and even violence,” Aneelah Afzali told Crosscut.com.

The sight of Afzali and Rev. Terry Kyllo preaching together in churches has become a norm for dozens of Washington residents.

The pair usually reserve their sermons for small, conservative towns filled with voters who support President Donald Trump and who may have never personally met a Muslim.

“We have so much else in common with our Christian sisters and brothers, but unfortunately there’s an entire industry that is trying to spread misinformation about Islam and Muslims in our country in order to divide us,” Afzali said...

Muslim Pupils Cheer Up Hospitalized Blackburn Kids and the Elderly

BLACKBURN – A group of Muslim high school pupils from Tauheedul Islam Boys’ High School (TIBHS) paid a special visit to hospitalized children in Blackburn, putting a smile on their faces before the holiday season.

“Our school aims to foster a charitable nature in our pupils all through the year, as we encourage them to take positive social action within their local communities,” Irfan Umarji, Vice Principal at TIBHS, told Asian Image on Tuesday.

“Christmastime is one of those times in the year when we step up our efforts to support people in need.”

Umarji was the main coordinator of the school’s visit and donations to Royal Blackburn Hospital.

“This year our school’s Festive Winter Gift Program aimed to brighten the days of people having to spend time in Royal Blackburn Hospital during the festive period,” Umarji said.

“It was wonderful to see patients smiling, happy to receive surprise gifts. It was also a hugely positive experience for our pupils to spread kindness and compassion in the hospital which is only a stone’s throw from our school.”...

Toronto Muslim, Jewish Women Help Needy on Christmas

TORONTO – Muslim and Jewish women in Wychwood, Toronto, joined hands Wednesday to give back to the community and help those in need to celebrate the holiday season.

“I was approached and asked if Wychwood would like to be a recipient of support this year and jumped at it,” explained Bluma Teram, a community engagement coordinator at Wychwood Open Door, City News reported Wednesday.

“We’re not here just for Muslims and Jews. All faiths share so much in common.”

Teram is a member of the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom (SOSS), a group of more than 100 Muslim and Jewish women formed earlier this year.

On Wednesday morning, about a dozen women donated winter clothes and toiletries during a holiday lunch at the neighborhood drop-in center, Wychwood Open Door.

“We share the idea of sadaqa [charity] or tzedakah,” said SOSS co-leader Cynthia Levine-Rasky.

“It’s similar in Arabic and Hebrew. It means something like charity. It means giving and compassion.”...

Charity TV Ad Challenges Misconception About Muslims, Christmas

WEST YORKSHIRE – A Wakefield-based charity will be screening Britain’s first ever Muslim charity advert on TV this Christmas, to challenge the misconception that Muslims are anti-Christmas.

“Just like a cup of tea that comes from the East, but is regarded as quintessentially British, so is Penny Appeal,” The Penny Appeal charity CEO Aemar Naeem explained earlier this week to Wakefield Express.

“Our Muslim faith comes from the East, but we are proudly British.

“Although we work in 30 crisis-hit countries, here in the UK we provide aid to the poor, homeless and needy to help alleviate poverty and transform lives, for just a few pennies a day.

“This is particularly important during the winter months, especially for the people who live on the streets, who desperately need warm food and shelter.”

The new commercial explains how the charity is helping poor and homeless across the UK for a few pence each day.

It will debut on Christmas Eve on ITV and Channel 5 to highlight the often-ignored role of British Muslims in helping vulnerable people across the UK over Christmas...

Muslims Offer Free Roasts to Homeless on Xmas

BIRMINGHAM – A Muslim family in Birmingham will hand out free turkey roasts to homeless people on Christmas day, helping the underprivileged to celebrate the holiday season.

“We just want to help people in our community,” Omed Faqiri, manager of the Classic Fish Bar and Kebab House in Birmingham, told The Independent.

“There are a lot of people sleeping in the streets. We are doing it because we can. We are just doing this for the people once a year,” Faqiri, 24, added.

Faqiri and his two brothers run the family kebab shop in Birmingham.

The three brothers they “just want to help people” after seeing a rise in rough sleepers in the area.

They started to offer free meals last year, welcoming from 30-40 people who took up the offer.

About 55 people sleep on the streets of Birmingham each night, according to the most recent Government statistics...

This Christmas, Muslims Reach Out to Christian Neighbors

HOUSTON – By way of faith tradition, Muslims have always rightfully claimed a natural connection to Christians, especially as it pertains to their love and respect for Jesus and his virgin mother Mary.

To anyone familiar with the Islamic teaching of Jesus’ birth, prophetic mission and predetermined role of defeating the Antichrist, as well as the high status of his blessed mother, honoring this mother and son duo is without question.

However, many Christians aren’t so well versed in the Muslim view of Jesus and Mary, and, even if they are, they might reject at least part of it outright.

With that in mind, is it worthwhile for American Muslims to reach out to their Christian neighbors during the Christmas season?

Some Muslims and Christians say definitely yes, arguing that demonstrating common ground and belief between the world’s two major faiths can only benefit Muslims at a time when many of them are demonized, or at the least distrusted, because of their Islamic beliefs. Others are more conflicted.

Perhaps the most notable such outreach this year is “The Muslim Christmas Song,” a song – presented in English and in Arabic – to the tune of “Deck the Halls,” a classic and easily recognizable holiday carol popular in the United States.

“The Muslim Christmas Song” was created by Raef Haggag, a Muslim singer-songwriter of Egyptian descent who was born in Washington, D.C.

Haggag’s version aims to create a bridge between Islam and Christianity, not only with the use of the beloved Christmas song, but with lyrics like “Upon Muhammad peace and blessings,” “Peace upon the son of Mary, Jesus sent with love and mercy.”...

Canadian Muslims Give Good Samaritan Best Christmas Ever

VANCOUVER – Canadian Muslims have crowdfunded for a gift for Jake Taylor, an ordinary Canadian who intervened during the violent Islamophobia-motivated assault of a young Muslim woman, giving him the best Christmas gift ever.

Filmmaker Muhammad Lila crowdfunded a campaign to give Taylor a surprise Christmas gift, because “it’s a Canadian thing to do to say thank you,” Global News reported...

St Louis Muslims, Jews Unite on Annual Day of Service

ST. LOUIS, Missouri – For the seventh year, about 1000 Muslim and Jewish volunteers in St. Louis gathered to help the community’s less fortunate, join Christians in celebrating the holidays, and build bridges in the society.

“It’s a really great way for people who don’t necessarily celebrate Christmas to come together and give back,” Cindy Follman, who is Jewish, said while helping her 8-year-old daughter make blankets for cancer patients at the Central Reform Congregation in St. Louis, St. Louis Post Dispatch reported Monday.

“It feels like the right thing to do today.”

The Follman family were among 1000 volunteers who went to community centers throughout the St. Louis area for projects benefiting more than 20 different charities.

The annual event is co-sponsored by the Islamic Foundation of Greater St. Louis and the Jewish Community Relations Council...

UK Muslims Help Grenfell Homeless Survivors

LONDON – The Muslim community in Croydon, South London, has been collecting donations to help families affected by the Grenfell tower fire earlier this year, including aid packages to survive cold weather.

“There were a lot of donations in the summer after the tragedy but none for the winter,” Florent Caillibotte, UK programs’ officer at Al-Khair Foundation told Croydon Guardian.

“Not everyone has been rehoused and there has been less and less support for them in terms of donations.”

The tragedy, in which 53 adults and 18 children died, occurred in June. A lack of warm clothes left the victims, who lost everything in the fire, freezing.

This week, members from the Al-Khair Foundation donated care packages to 30 of the most affected families, who are still living in hotels...
