UK Church to Remove Pews to Welcome Muslims

OLDHAM, Manchester – A church in Oldham has been given permission to remove its pews to host their Muslim neighbors in interfaith events and maintain ties between followers of the two faiths.

“The purpose of the re-ordering of the Church is to open up the Church for community use, as part of its service and mission to the mainly Muslim community in the parish and to enable the wider community to share its heritage,” the Chancellor of the Diocese of Manchester told The Express.

“The Church wishes to be a place of welcome, growth and engagement for the local communities.”...

UK Muslims Launch Vending Machine for Homeless

NOTTINGHAM – Being a daily commuter from Nottingham to Cambridge, Huzaifah Khaled managed to develop a special bond with the homeless, who usually take refuge in train stations.

“In the UK, train stations are almost magnets for homeless people,” Khaled told The Washington Post.

“When I’d be waiting for trains, walking to and from the train station . . . I came into contact with a lot of them.”

Taking the road along lengthy 90 miles, Khaled talked with the homeless, bought them coffee, and over time, developed relationships with them.

“I essentially developed a very deep understanding of their needs,” said Khaled, who recently got his Ph.D. in law.

“I realized that there had to be a more effective way of getting at least the bare necessities to them,” he said.

Enlightened about the challenges they face, Khaled developed an idea for a vending machine for the homeless, offering a 24/7 pit stop where people can access free food, clothing, and other basic supplies.

Over the past two years, he devoted weekends and evenings to the project, all the while working toward his Ph.D.

“I speculatively approached over 50 manufacturers across England and Europe — most ignored my proposal, a few politely declined, and just before I was about to give up and try to raise funds to buy a machine instead, [N&W Global Vending] responded to my letter and invited me to pitch the idea to them,” he said...

Arkansas Mosque Forgives Vandal, Grants Him Freedom

ARKANSAS – The Muslim community in Fort Smith, Arkansas, has forgiven a vandal who attacked their mosque last year, granting him his freedom ticket.

“It shouldn’t be hanging over him for the rest of his life,” President of Masjid Al Salam in Fort Smith Louay Nassri told NWA homepage.

The attack, caught on camera, occurred in October last year when Abraham Davis sprayed Swastika and the words “go home” at the front of the Masjid Al Salam.

“We knew this person did a bad thing and there have to be consequences for their actions,” Nassri said. “But we didn’t have any ill feelings towards anybody.”

Davis’ felony charge consisted of community service and a hefty fine, a debt he could not pay.

“We heard that he was having financial problems,” Nassri said. “Now if you don’t pay your fine, that’s an automatic six years in jail. Well, we didn’t want him to go to jail for six years.”...

This Christian Librarian Dons Hijab to Support Muslims

CONWAY, Arkansas – Nancy Allen, a librarian, published author, and a member of a church choir from Conway, Arkansas, has been wearing hijab for almost two years to support Muslim women and counter hateful rhetoric targeting the religious minority.

“Everything hit me all at once,” Allen told Northwest Arkansas on Tuesday, recalling the then-presidential candidate Donald Trump’s promise to ban Muslims from entering the US in December 2015.

“I started channeling the [Lutheran minister and Hitler foe] Martin Niemoller quote about how the Nazis first arrested socialists, then trade union members, then Jews. Each time, Niemoller said, “I did not speak out” because he was not a socialist, a trade unionist, or a Jew.

“Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me,” said Niemoller, who spent seven years in Nazi concentration camps.

“I had that thought, and I was thinking of the poem on the Statue of Liberty,” Allen said. “It was about that time we were seeing these horrible images of [Syrian refugee children] being washed up” ashore in Europe.

Using hijab as a spiritual way to support Muslim women, Allen was afraid that the US might repeat its history of forcing minorities like Muslims to live in internment camps, like they did with Japanese-Americans during World War II...

Syrian Refugees in Canada Celebrate New Year By Giving Blood

CALGARY – Syrian refugees in Calgary welcomed the new year with a blood donation drive to show their appreciation and gratitude to the Canadian people.

In Austria: Love Overcomes Hate for Muslim New Year’s Baby

VIENNA – A Muslim couple who received their little baby Asel only a few minutes into 2018 was greeted with a wave of racism, disgust, and hate, which was soon countered by love and support messages.

“In the first hours of her life, this sweet girl was already the target of an unbelievable wave of violent, hateful online commentary,” Klaus Schwertner, secretary general of the Vienna chapter of the Roman Catholic charity Caritas, wrote on his Facebook page, The New York Times reported.

“It is a completely new dimension of online hate, targeting an innocent newborn,” he said.

As part of the Austrian newspaper’s tradition on New Year’s day, the names of “New Year’s Baby” are announced in the paper.

Instead of well-wishes, the new girl and her family—especially the mother, whose smiling face was encircled by a bright pink hijab—received a wave of racism on social media.

“I’m hoping for a crib death,” wrote one user. “Deport the scum immediately,” read another posting to Heute’s Facebook page, it reported on Thursday.

Though both the Freedom Party and the conservative People’s Party of Chancellor Sebastian Kurz campaigned on anti-immigrant platforms, Schwertner sought to turn the sentiment around, calling on his followers to stand up for the young family in an outpouring of social media support.

By Thursday, more than 10,000 people had shared his message and more than 17,000 people posted hearts, along with words of congratulations, support, and encouragement.

“Welcome to the world little one. May your life be blessed with love and peace,” Liesbeth Halbertsma wrote on Facebook...

Canadian Muslim Charity Help Homeless Across the Country

TORONTO – Islamic Relief Canada has launched a national appeal to help the homeless during the winter season.

As temperatures dip to -35 in parts of the country over the weekend, the international charity will be partnering up with local organizations in five cities to launch an emergency winter response to deliver winter kits to those living on the streets and in shelters.

“The drastic low temperatures are life-threatening to those living on the streets,” said Reyhana Patel, Islamic Relief’s Head of Public Relations.

“The supplies we are distributing in the winter kits will help reduce the impact these conditions can have on individuals.”

“It is our duty as a community to ensure we are doing everything we can to help our neighbors.”

Winter jackets, boots, hoodies, thermal underwear, scarves, gloves and feminine hygiene products are just some of the items in the winter kit that volunteers and staff will be distributed to the homeless on the streets and in shelters – starting this weekend...

Montreal Government Honors Interfaith Center

MONTREAL – Gathering under one roof in Montreal, the spirit of goodwill and collaboration among a Catholic church, a mosque, and a Chabad center have been recognized by the Quebec government and held up as an example to all.

Le Collectif pour l’unité, the Collective for Unity, an ongoing interfaith project on Montreal’s Nuns’ Island, was presented with the National Assembly Medal by MNA Isabelle Melançon, in a ceremony at the Elgar Community Centre in December, CTV News reported.

For almost two years, members of Ste-Marguerite Bourgeoys Church, the Al-Jazira Islamic Centre and the Chabad of Nuns’ Island have been working side-by-side to help resettle recently arrived Syrian refugees.

They wish to be a model of what is possible when people set aside their differences to better the lives of others...

“Muslim Ban” Actually Improved Americans’ Attitude to Muslims

WASHINGTON – Though Donald Trump’s “Muslim ban” unleashed a huge wave of Islamophobic attacks targeting Muslims, a new study has revealed that the same decision actually improved attitudes toward Muslim, as people viewed such bans as “un-American.”

“In the hours and days after the executive order was signed we also demonstrated that the information environment — which overwhelmingly focused on the ban above other news events and executive orders — painted the ban, to some degree, as inherently un-American,” the authors of the study published this week in the journal Political Behavior stated, Vox reported...

Baltimore Muslims Feed Homeless in MLK Day of Service

BALTIMORE – For both American Muslims and homeless people, Martin Luther King Day of Service was a special one this year.

From early hours on Sunday, volunteers from both the Muslim Social Services Agency and Islamic Relief USA handed out free hot meals and bags of toiletries.

“Fried chicken in the house!” Carrie McLean, a 60-year-old elderly woman who received a hot meal outside St. Vincent de Paul Church in Baltimore.

“It’s a blessing. Can’t put it better than that.”

Mclean is one of the homeless people who received about 150 bags of toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, socks, deodorant, sanitary products, combs and washcloths, and another 250 or so meals of New York Fried Chicken and turkey and tuna fish sandwiches.

About 20 volunteers from the Muslim Social Services Agency and Islamic Relief USA spent their Sunday morning packing the food into containers and toiletries into care packages at the Masjid As Saffat mosque on West North Avenue...

Canadian Muslims, Jews Share Security for Better Future

MISSISSAUGA – Only six months detached the Canadian Muslim community and its Jewish neighbors from initiating security protocols to avoid the recurrence of the sorrowful mass shooting at Quebec Islamic Cultural Centre, where six Muslim men were killed last Jaunary.

“Critical to community security is knowing who to work within the police department,” explained Jeffrey Brown, a community security volunteer at a synagogue for ten years...

US Group Unites Faiths on Martin Luther King Day

HARFORD – Marking the annual day of service, an American interfaith group gathered at the Jewish temple in Havre de Grace to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day amid hopes of extending new interfaith bridges in the American community.

“Our combined efforts create something larger than the sum of its parts, just as we make something greater when we combine our individual personalities, desires, beliefs and energies to make the world a better place for all of us,” Stu Needel, temple’s social action co-chair and a board of trustees member, told Baltimore Sun.

According to Jonas Vogelhut, vice president of membership for the temple, about 135 people attended the event,  including members of Temple Adas Shalom, St. James AME Church, and Al Falaah mosque in Abingdon.

The multi-faith gathering was organized by Harford County Alliance of Abrahamic Faiths...

Belgian Muslims, Jews Challenge Slaughter Ban

BRUSSELS – Muslim and Jewish groups in Belgium filed a lawsuit Tuesday against a legislation that bans halal and kosher meat in two Belgian regions.

“That’s very sad, but it’s also unlawful. It’s a violation of European legal norms, including the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, and we are hopeful it will be overturned as such,” Yohan Benizri, the president of the Belgian Federation of Jewish Organizations, told The Daily Mail.

“This is trumping rights to practice faith, in violation of the crucial principle of separation of church and state,” he continued.

The lawsuit was filed by Belgium’s Coordinating Council of Islamic Institutions and the Belgian Federation of Jewish Organizations.

Along with the two representative bodies, the European Jewish Congress and the World Jewish Congress joined the lawsuit...

Non-Muslim Allies Form Human Chain Around Muslims Praying During Travel Ban Protest (NY)

More than 100 interfaith demonstrators gathered in New York City on Friday to mark the one-year anniversary of President Donald Trump’s first executive order on immigration, which included a ban on travel for residents from several Muslim-majority countries.

People gathered in the city’s Washington Square Park to voice their continued disapproval of the president’s order, which sparked nationwide protests, including at New York’s airports and public spaces.

After listening to a leader sing out the Islamic call to prayer, interfaith allies linked hands to form a human chain of protection around Muslims as they knelt down in the public space for Friday prayers.

The Rev. Dr. Chloe Breyer, executive director of the Interfaith Center of New York, told HuffPost she hoped the action provided a feeling of safety and security for the worshippers, many of whom were students from nearby New York University...
