Virginia Church Hosts `Eid Al-Adha Prayer

BURKE, Virginia – A local church in Burke, Virginia, opened its door on Tuesday, August 21, to host `Eid Al-Adha prayer, accommodating the growing number of Muslims in the community.

“We were able actually to pray and accomplish our `Eid prayer and our goal of getting closer to God, even though it is actually in a church,” Yousef Zerwal, a Moroccan-American Muslim, told Voice Of America.

“So personally, I am proud to be part of this message that, if anything, shows tolerance that exists in this community,” Zerwal said.

Muslims across the world celebrated `Eid al-Adha holiday on Tuesday, August 21 with prayers and slaughtering of cattle, sheep, and goats.

Close to Washington, DC, the Peace Islamic Center in Burke could not accommodate the large number of Muslims who wanted to attend the prayer.

Same as recent years, the center arranged to hold large gatherings at nearby St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.

“We are all people of the book — Jews, Muslims, and Christians. And so for me, it is very easy to welcome people of the book, who worship God into our place,” Rev. Tim Heflin, the second rector of St. Andrew’s, said...

Luton Mosques Team Up to Clean the City

LUTON, UK – Mosques in Luton, south east the UK, have teamed up with community groups to clean the city, in an effort planned to bring people together from all backgrounds and faiths.

“The ‘Big Clean Up’ has been an incredibly successful initiative across our town, raising awareness around a cleaner town, highlighting the importance of looking after our neighborhoods and promoting the value of taking social responsibility and caring for the environment,” Sujel Miah, on behalf of Luton Council of Mosques and Sunni Council of Mosques, said, Luton Today reported Tuesday.

“It has brought together individuals, families, children from different backgrounds, faiths and cultures that are passionate about looking after their town and committed to working together towards building a strong and harmonious community.” ...

Muslim Community Unites to Help Australian Farmers

The Muslim Community is digging deep to support struggling farmers battling the worst drought in a century.

Mosques across Australia are raising funds that will be donated to those who are doing very tough on their land.

“We offer our moral support and this is the least we can do for them to pray and to also provide them some financial assistance from the Muslim community.” Mohammed Azhari of Burnada Mousqe said.

The Council of Imams Queensland (CIQ) organized the prayers at the Australian International Islamic College (AIIC) earlier this month.

Muslim Charitable Foundation (MCF) volunteers collected funds for drought stricken farmers at the prayers.

Kerala Priest Visits Mosque to Thank Muslims for Help During Floods

KERALA – Hundreds of Muslim worshippers in a mosque in the south Indian state of Kerala have been surprised after a Catholic priest took the podium to thank Muslims for help during floods, Hindustan Times reported Monday.

“I cannot express my gratitude to them in words. That much help and support they had extended during the time of difficulties,” Father Sanu Puthussery, belonging to the Syro-Malabar Church, told congregants at the Juma Masjid at Vechoor in Kottayam district during jum’ah (Friday prayers) on August 31.

The Catholic priest addressed members of the Muslim community, thanking them for selflessly feeding the flood victims who had taken shelter at his church...

South Africa Opens Mosques for Visits on Heritage Day

DURBAN – In keeping with the spirit of the Shaka Heritage Day of South Africa on September 24 when the citizens are encouraged to celebrate diversity, selected mosques across the country will be open for visits as part of the “National Mosque Open Day campaign,” IOL.co.za reported on September 7.

“The mosque open day programme is designed to welcome people of all faith groups to meet Muslims,” said Dr. Faisal Suliman, Chairperson of the South African Muslim Network.

The program includes a meet and greet, a tour of the mosque, an explanation of prayer and ablution, and a question and answer session to freely talk about Islam and Muslims with Muslims.

Some of the mosques which will be open are the Reservoir Hills Masjid, Juma Masjid in Grey Street, the Musallah on Musgrave, as well as the Wembezi Islamic Dawah Centre in Escourt.

The Shaka Heritage Day is celebrated in commemoration of the Zulu King Shaka who united the Zulu clans of South Africa into a cohesive nation.

People gather annually at King Shaka’s grave to honor him on this day for his good deeds and sincere national efforts...

Muslim, Christian Women Share Interfaith Walk in Glasgow

GLASGOW – Muslim and Christian women walked together in Glasgow’s Queens Park to discuss their lives and faith.

“When you’re walking, you look at people differently,” Church of Scotland Moderator, the Right Reverend Susan Brown, told The BBC.

“If you’re walking alongside somebody, the conversation’s a lot looser, it’s a lot freer and I think a lot richer in many respects as well,” she added.

The walk was organized by The Church of Scotland and Amina Muslim Women’s Resource Centre.

It was inspired by the Reverend Brown’s campaign to encourage more people to engage with the outdoors...

Canadian Project Finds Common Ground for Muslims, Catholics

EDMONTON – Local Catholic and Muslim leaders in Edmonton, Canada, have organized a ‘Meet&Greet’ event to create mutual understanding between the two religious communities for a “deeper way of tolerance and coexistence”.

“The most dangerous challenge facing Christians and Muslims is a misconception, misunderstanding, how to deal with the other. You have to listen to others,” Imam Nasser Ibrahim of Al-Rashid Mosque, told Catholic Register on September 11.

Canadian Muslims and Catholics cooperate in different fields like education, social services, housing, refugee settlement, and social justice. Yet, there are new calls on both sides to do more than sharing social issues but to understand each other in a deeper way.

The ‘Meet&Greet’ event, held on August 28, was preceded by a visit to Al-Rashid Mosque from Archbishop Richard Smith in 2017...

Yorkshire Police Unveils Modest Uniform for Female Muslim Officers

WEST YORKSHIRE – The West Yorkshire police force has become the first in the UK to offer an alternative modest uniform to female Muslim officers.

“For the last month we have been trialing a new uniform for women which is designed not to show the female form,” assistant chief constable Angela Williams told Daily Star on Monday, September 17.

“This was suggested by a Muslim female officer and was designed by our Clothing Manager in conjunction with the officer…

“This has been well-received from officers in the force and we have now made further supplies of this uniform for other officers to try it if they wish.”

Williams added that the new modest uniform was suggested to encourage Muslims to join the force...

British Faith Minister Urges Schools to Have Mosque Trips

LONDON – The Faith Minister of the UK, Lord Bourne, told The Times in an interview on September 17 that he encourages more schools to take the pupils and their families on trips to mosques to stamp out Islamophobia among parents.

“Occasionally, you find that parents are saying: ‘We’re not sure we want our kids to go to the local mosque’,” Bourne he told The Times.

“They’re then persuaded by the school that it’s a good idea and the kids come back and tell them about it and the parents then say, ‘Oh, that’s interesting, perhaps we’ll visit ourselves’,” he added...

Muslim Group Breaks Barriers with “Meet-a-Muslim Monday” Series

DALLAS, Texas – An American Muslim advocacy group has launched a new social media series that portrays American Muslims, hoping to counter rising Islamophobia.

French City Mayor Lifts Burkini Ban

PARIS – A divisive debate over Muslim full-body swimsuit, or burkini, has reignited in France after the mayor of Rennes city, Brittany in northwestern France, allowed women wearing the outfit in council pools.

The decision was issued by Nathalie Appéré, the Socialist mayor of Rennes in Brittany, The Times reported on Thursday, October 11.

The decision came to light after a 23-year-old woman with a five-month-old daughter asked for permission to swim in a burkini in Gayeulles pool in Rennes last week and was told that it was allowed...

‘Ask a Muslim Anything’ Tours New England

SEABROOK, New Hampshire – Touring New England to advocate for public awareness of Muslim culture, a Muslim photojournalist will hold his “Ask A Muslim Anything” conversation Thursday evening in Seabrook, New Hampshire.

“It sort of has a life of its own now,” Robert Azzi, a Muslim photojournalist from Exeter, told Newburyport Daily News on Thursday, October 11.

“I go to schools, churches, synagogues, retirement communities. I’m having a really good time doing it. In many places, many people haven’t met a Muslim or haven’t had time to engage with a Muslim or get to know what Muslims believe.”

In the event held Thursday evening at Seabrook Public Library, Azzi is inviting not only Seabrook residents, but people from Greater Newburyport to ask questions about Islam and its culture.

Azzi started his program “Ask A Muslim Anything,” with the hope of diminishing misunderstanding among those who practice different religions...

Penn Muslim Students Conclude Islamic Discovery Series

PENNSYLVANIA – Muslim students in Pennsylvania University have concluded a successful annual Islamic Discovery Series (IDS) as part of their efforts to encourage inner reflections and increase awareness of Muslim culture and practices.

“The biggest thing that we try to get out of IDS is the idea that there is a lot of fear surrounding things you don’t know,” College senior and MSA President Zahraa Mohammed told The Daily Pennsylvanian.

“In order to overcome that fear, you have to get to know the people behind it. Then you’ll see a lot of similarities and a lot of understanding start to grow out of that.”

Hosted by the Penn Muslim Students Association, this week’s annual IDS culminated in a lecture from guest speaker Yasmin Mogahed, a renowned author and speaker in the Muslim community.

This year’s Islamic Discovery Series is part of MSA’s continued efforts to spread awareness of Islam and mutual understanding in the current political climate.

Over 100 students from universities around Philadelphia came to hear Mogahed’s lecture which focused on mental health and how it plays into spirituality and religion...
