American Interfaith Youth Summit Inspires Unity, Service

NEVADA – A sum of 80 teenagers from over ten different faiths including Muslim American youth concluded their activities at the ‘Voices for Change’ Interfaith Youth Summit which was organized by Nevada Interfaith Association since mid-November, ThisisReno reported on December 1.

“The interfaith youth summit paved the way to establish our future diverse leaders. It was eye-opening to most of them. They aren’t aware of the challenges facing our community and the choices they should make to start facing them,” expressed Sherif Elfass, Northern Nevada Muslim Community president.

The event started on November 17 at Joe Crowley Student Union building in the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) in collaboration with the university’s Student Life Center.

One of the attendees said: “I learned that more things bring religions together than separate them. It was great because I talked to many different kids and learned there are all different ways to solve problems.”

Michele Gehr, one of the panel’s non-profit leaders appreciated the youth’s service focus by saying: “It’s encouraging to see young people come together and seek solutions to improve our community.”...

Irish Muslims to Open Mosque Doors This Weekend

LAOIS, Leinster – The Muslim community in Laois, in the Irish South Midlands in the province of Leinster, are set to open the doors of their mosque this weekend, inviting local people to tour the worshipping house.

“This is also an opportunity for people to come and ask the questions that they may have regarding Islam and Muslims,” organizers of the event said, Leinster Express reported.

“The open day will be complete with information, history, artworks, artifacts and literature about Islam and Muslims.”

In the event hosted at Rehman House, Dublin Road, Portlaoise, Muslims invited the local community to meet Irish Muslims who live in town and surrounding areas.

Along with getting more information on the Islamic faith, people will also be able to experience some other cultural aspects associated with the religion.

These include calligraphy, face painting, henna, and artifacts.

Traditional food will also be served to visitors to give them a ‘taste’ of the lifestyle which is part of being Muslim.

“There will also be short discussion forums where members of the public will be able to discuss and ask questions about Islam and Muslims,” said the organizers...

Scottish Author Urges Fellow Muslims to Join Xmas Celebrations

GLASGOW – A Scottish Muslim author and historian has encouraged fellow Muslims to join Christmas celebrations, saying that shared respect for Jesus (peace be upon him) should bring people together.

“Muslims who truly understand the Koran should see Christmas celebrations as an opportunity to show that Jesus is mentioned and respected in the Qur’an,” Paigham Mustafa, a Pakistani-born publisher and businessman, told Scottish Sun.

“Believers share this respect with those who follow Christ.

“Muslims everywhere should focus on making a world community of peace and respect.”

Mustafa urged Muslims to send festive cards, decorate their homes in tinsel, and wear Santa hats.

“Sending greeting cards and wishing each other Merry Christmas should be an opportunity to foster and strengthen good community relations,” he said.

“Wearing a Santa hat or pulling a festive cracker isn’t going to weaken anybody’s beliefs.”...

Canadian Muslims, Christians Launch Campaign against Discrimination

LONDON – In an Ontario city where more than one-fifth of the population is comprised of immigrants, five churches and a mosque are sending a targeted message that they embrace everyone in the community regardless of faith or ethnicity, London Free Press reported on December 10.

“The purpose of the campaign is to change the conversation among Londoners about racism and discrimination and open their eyes to even small acts of hidden discrimination and then start to create an atmosphere that encourages co-existence,” said Jill Tansley, co-chair of the immigration partnership in London, Ontario.

The campaign of the six local faith groups displays “All are welcome here” on their bulletin boards to combat discrimination and racism.

It’s part of an initiative of the London and Middlesex Local Immigration Partnership, a collaborative community initiative co-chaired by the City of London...

Ohio Mosques Open Doors to Public

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In the first such event in Ohio, mosques across the Midwestern American state opened their doors to the public on Sunday, December 16, reaching out to their neighbors to know more about their faith, NBC reported.

“Hear about Muslims from Muslims,” said Ammar Ahmad Awan of Masjid Omar Ibn El-Khattab.

“Sometimes you have to cross that comfort zone or comfort barrier and then go across that to learn something new, and that’s exactly what this event is about,” he added.

The open mosque event was bearing fruits.

For Kelli and Evans Jasper, it gave them an opportunity to know more about Islam.

“Both of us have known sort of academically about Islam and the beliefs of Islam but this is more of a chance to make it personal and see what it looks like in people’s lives,” said Kelli.

After touring the mosque, getting answers for their questions, the two stayed during one of the Muslim prayers.

Kelli believes such events will eventually tear down walls of hate.

“Anything you think about a group of people can fall apart as soon as you know an individual.”...

This is How Detroit Muslims Spent Christmas Eve

CORKTOWN, Detroit – As families gathered in warm homes on Christmas Eve, a group of Muslim residents in Corktown, Detroit, volunteered to give a helping hand to those in need, ClickOnDetroit reported.

“We’re alleviating volunteers who would normally like to celebrate the holidays,” said Kayla Botelho, from Mercy-USA for Aid and Development.

Botelho and other volunteers from the Mercy-USA for Aid and Development served up meals at the soup kitchen inside St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

Though Muslims don’t celebrate Christmas, Botelho said it is a time of year for everyone to give back...
