Serving Humanity

Our responsibility is to remove ignorance with knowledge...

So it is very important for us to be teachers. The Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned "I was sent as a teacher". And so we should see ourselves in our coming and our going, our speeches, our actions and our state of being to be constantly teaching and educating and giving out ...

Serve Your Community

So that is our challenge, and one of the good things that we are doing as a community are the projects such as WhyIslam, and the various human service initiatives such, as the Meals on Wheels and other projects that ICNA has initiated. And we have to continue, we have to support these projects. We have to intensify our efforts in that regard because these are basic human kindnesses that touch people's hearts...

Mercy: The Distinguishing Trait of Islam – 2

What is a Hero?

Being Superior to the Ills of Society

If we move away from that textbook definition, and reflect on another definition, this definition is given to us by the infamous or famous-depending on how you look at him- Napoleon Bonaparte. He said

“True heroism consists in being superior to the ills of life, in whatever shape they may challenge us to combat.”

This definition allows room, space and opportunity for all of us to be heroes, for if each one of us looks deep down inside of ourselves, digs deep down inside of ourselves, we can pull up those qualities and those characteristics which allow us to rise above the ills of life, the ills of society, the ills that are even within ourselves, and to combat, overcome and to rise above.

Brothers and sisters, we know that there are many ills in our society, and this is not the time to run through all those ills, or to even emphasize or focus on them. But we should understand that no matter what those ills are in our society, and we can complain about them, we can dismiss them, we can become obsessed with overcoming them. But if we understand that our truth, love, dedication, compassion and mercy are calling us to rise above those ills, then as we said each and everyone of us can be a hero...

Conclusion

In conclusion, I say if you leave this hall today with nothing more than a conviction that your love, charity, mercy, courage, nobility and dignity can allow you to be a light in this world, then brothers and sisters you can be a hero.

I’d like to conclude by asking all of you to join me in a prayer that was taught to us by our Prophet Muhammad, (peace and mercy be upon him), and that is a prayer that we all become filled and enveloped with light, and all the manifestations of mercy, compassion, love, charity and respecting and honoring justice. Those are all manifestations of light. So repeat after me, if you will...

Zaid Shakir: Love For Your Brother

Love… Glue that Holds the Community Together

“No one of you truly believes until he loves for his brother (she loves for her sister) what he loves for himself”, this hadith is the antidote for one of the most destructive diseases that can afflict the body politic of the Muslim community, and that is the disease of jealousy. Jealousy is described as the disease of the nations.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) says “The disease of the nations will creep upon you, that’s to say hatred and jealousy.” Jealousy is a disease, and the Prophet mentioned that “Jealousy consumes good deeds the same way as fire consumes dry wood”, so it just burns away our good deeds.

And the Prophet (peace be upon him) reminded us of those things which strong Islamic brotherhood is built on. The first thing he said “Don’t envy one another, don’t conspire against each other by raising the prices with no intention to buy whatever commodity when one is raising the price just to harm one’s brother, don’t hate one another, don’t turn your backs to one another.”

But the first thing he mentioned is “Don’t envy one another”. Envy or jealousy is desiring a blessing Allah has given a brother or sister to be taken away from them. That’s the essence of Envy.

This hadith is the antidote because it encourages the opposite: jealousy or envy is desiring to have a blessing that our brother or sister has been given by Allah taken away. The Prophet saying “No one of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself,” this is a desire to have a blessing one has or possess extended to one’s brother or sister. So it’s the opposite.

And by encouraging this in our communities, we are not only rid ourselves of this deadly disease, but we engage in an action that perfects and strengthens and completes our faith. So it’s very important for us to reflect on this particular hadith...

Love Is One Of The Foundations Of Faith

Imam Zaid Shakir states that one of the greatest foundations of faith is love, it is associated with the qualities of the heart that is from the unseen realm, and is the first description of the believer mentioned in the Quran.
