I wasn't sure which forum to post this question in so I opted for this one.
At my office, we play BINGO based on your attendance and being on time and such. The winner receives money in cash. Now that I am Muslim, is it okay to participate in the office BINGO? My gut feeling is telling me no because it is a game where you can win money. Can someone please help me out with this so I know if this is haram or not?
Thanks! :)

Salam
If you have to give money to participate, and it's based on luck, then it's haram. If it's like a reward based on your performance, I don't see a problem. |

It's a mix of the two. There's no giving of money from us to participate. It is based on the luck of the draw of the BINGO numbers. However, if you win BINGO they look at your attendance and make sure that you clocked in on time. If you have and have not missed any days then you win $25 cash.

If there's no money, then it does not fall into gambling. Sounds more like an incentive to me. Who gives the money away?

Then I think it's ok. Anybody else like to give an opinion?

Are you saying it is okay to receive money from the game but not to invest money in the game? That seems rather duplicitous. Why not just give a resounding "no" so there won't be any questions?

Because gambling means that someone loses at the same time that someone wins. Here there are no losers. What makes it duplicitous?

The language and the implication do, i.e. Bingo is either gambling or it isn't gambling.
Any contest or game is a win, lose or draw situation whether it has money, personality, talent, attendance, physical goods or just time invested. Life is often described as a gamble. You take chances crossing the street. Simple as that. Originally posted by hamayoun

In the context of Islamic law, gambling refers to a situation where someone makes money out of someone else's money through chance. This thread is asking about the Islamic position of the action being described, not about the other things you are describing.

From what you said about the way BINGO is played in your office, it sounds more like an incentive to be at work on time rather than gambling, like hamayoun said. I don't see where the gambling part of it would come in if you are not putting any money into the game.
