Balanced Islam: Transcript of Part 2

There is a rule that necessity allows for exception. So necessity makes what is ordinary prohibited permissible...

Most of us aren’t saintly people. We are just ordinary people, and if these kinds of stresses go on for a lot of time it can affect our religion. And remember one of the goals is to preserve religion. But at the same time we are getting into a really dangerous territory here. And it makes me wonder if what you need is not simply to keep making exceptions to the rules, but to have a paradigm shift...

Imagination in the Construction of Islamic Ethics

Hatford Seminary - April 2012

Mattson explores the way in which imagination, as a mode of thinking, relates to and forms an essential part of the reasoning process.

Human imagination is both limiting and freeing as we contemplate the reality of the world in which we live and which we would like to see improved.

Sacred Dialogues Across the Qur'an

Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education | Santa Clara University
Bannan Institute 2012-13: Sacred Text in the Public Sphere

During the period of revelation, believing men and women raised questions about the fairness of certain practices, and even about the way in which the Qur'an spoke about them. The fact that many of these concerns were addressed by the ongoing revelation is part of the Qur'anic message that needs to be better understood. The Qur'an is not just a collection of instructions to passive believers, but a responsive engagement with people created by God with intellects and consciences.

The Earth is a Home for You @ Hartford Seminary

With all the displacement and disasters of the 21st century, both natural and man-made, people can feel disconnected from the place in which they find themselves living, Dr. Ingrid Mattson said in a lecture on June 21 at Hartford Seminary.

Dr. Mattson, who taught at the Seminary from 1998-2012, discussed those challenges and how to respond to them in a talk she called "The Earth Is a Home for You."

"Disasters really force us back to our bodies," she said, describing her family's experience during the October 2011 snowstorm in Connecticut. "They are about place. ... Where we are and who is with us determines how we survive. One minute we are strangers, the next we are clutching hands in the dark."

Finding that send of place and connectedness can be difficult, though, for people who are new to the place they're living, including those who have fled oppression.

"We live in a time of great displacement and transition," she said. "To feel like we belong, we need to be connected to both the nature and the culture of that place."

Dr. Mattson Finds Protection With Her Dog

Dr. Ingrid Mattson, a renowned Muslim professor, has shared her story with her dog Ziggy in a YouTube video produced as part of a series about the lives of American Muslims.

"Dr. Mattson is one of the most prominent female leaders in the Muslim community, and was almost attacked and received several hateful threats for being in her position," filmmaker Aman Ali, who launched a new video series under the title Homegrown Homies, told BOING BOING site on Monday, March 16.

"So she got a dog named Ziggy to protect herself and her family and thus a beautiful bond was born."
