I'm not into the liberal stuff despite the fact that they are pro-Muslim, but I get emails from some mailing lists (God knows why) and here's one I got recently:

*******
In Uganda, it’s already illegal to be gay. But some government officials -- with support from American evangelicals -- want to take government-sanctioned homophobia a step further. They’ve proposed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill that would, among other things, institute the death penalty for repeated same-sex activity, which the bill's author has dubbed “aggravated homosexuality”.

This bill could pass any day now -- a “Christmas gift” to Uganda, in the words of the Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament.

But our allies on the ground tell us that if Pepsi, which has a huge presence in Uganda, speaks out against the bill and the harmful effect it would have on investment and economic development in Uganda, it would force Ugandan officials to put the bill on hold -- or even pull it entirely.

**********
Any thoughts on what Christian groups are promoting this?

Apparently, the email wants readers to petition that Pepsi do something about protecting the gays. Pepsi, which contributes heavily to the Ugandan economy, might give gays some leverage if it decides to withdraw its business from the country if the law passes.

No idea about this specifically, but US funded evangelical/pentecostal churches are certainly targeting the developing world. Their 'aggressive' expansion is not always trouble free either. Their methods of proselytising don't always exactly help to foster religious harmony and their views can sometimes be towards the more extreme end of the scale.

It might be difficult to demonstrate how significant the evangelicals role is in a situation like this though, as many Africans are deeply homophobic, and politicians aren't shy about scapegoating minorities for their own benefit.

Fundamentalist Christians tend to be pretty anti-gay though, so I doubt they are going be championing Gay rights...

Might find some more info here:

Looks like a couple of years ago, American Christian groups ran a conference where they blamed homosexuality for Nazism and national genocide, they also warned that gays rape children in schools and show them porn: Uganda Anti-Gay Conference: Day 3 — Gays Blamed For Rwandan Genocide & Pedophilia; More Exodus Ties To Holocaust Revisionism

Always a minority to exploit.

Without wanting to sound harsh and appear homophobic.. which i am not ... I do tend to wonder whether pedophilia is more associated with homosexual men than hetrosexual men. Its a highly contentious and controversial thing to raise in today's PC climate. But there are non-wacko extremist studies out there which do seem to suggest that is perhaps a reality.

I'll use my own Church's much publicised situation with sexual misconduct with minors as an example ( which as i've stated and documented is no greater an issue than in any other religious body or public authority). The  statistics reveal that over the past 5 decades the overwhelming vast majority of cases brought against the church were perpetrated by gay clergy against mostly consenting gay adolecent under age males.

Steve Baldwin is/was the executive director of the Council for National Policy in Washington, D.C. at the time of writting:

“Overwhelming evidence supports the belief that homosexuality is a sexual deviancy often accompanied by disorders that have dire consequences for our culture,”
wrote Steve Baldwin in, “Child Molestation and the Homosexual Movement,” soon to be published by the Regent University Law Review.

“It is difficult to convey the dark side of the homosexual culture without appearing harsh,” wrote Baldwin. “However, it is time to acknowledge that homosexual behavior threatens the foundation of Western civilization – the nuclear family.”

Baldwin’s research is substantiated in a recently completed body of work written by Dr. Judith Reisman, president of the Institute for Media Education and author of numerous authoritative books debunking sexual myths, including “Kinsey, Crimes & Consequences.”

In her thesis – also written for the Regent University Law Review – Reisman cited psychologist Eugene Abel, whose research found that homosexuals “sexually molest young boys with an incidence that is occurring from five times greater than the molestation of girls. …”

Abel also found that non-incarcerated “child molesters admitted from 23.4 to 281.7 acts per offender … whose targets were males.”

“The rate of homosexual versus heterosexual child sexual abuse is staggering,” said Reisman, who was the principal investigator for an $800,000 Justice Department grant studying child pornography and violence. “Abel’s data of 150.2 boys abused per male homosexual offender finds no equal (yet) in heterosexual violations of 19.8 girls.”

Just saying...

But i'd be the last person to treat someone who is gay as a suspected child abuser.  If anything.. if such a situation is true. I don't think its due to being homosexual, i think it has more to do with people (more so in the past) who happen to be homosexual but perhaps do not want to be stigmatised for being so, and therfore hide their sexual tendancies or have repressed them through life  but have used children as their means to fulfil their needs through threats or manipulation therefore not being exposed.
