US Mosques Teach the Language of the Future

DETROIT – An American Muslim IT expert and university professor has started a unique educational program that turns mosques into part-time IT programing hubs, teaching young Muslim the language of the future.

“We complain that our youth play video games and [are] on their phones 24/7, but technology is hard to avoid nowadays,” Professor Omar Malik, a highly skilled software engineer and a part-time professor at Wayne State University, told Fusion TV on Monday, July 18.

“Imagine teaching them how to build their own educational games and Android apps to benefit humanity. That way they are building something useful, not wasting time.”

Born in Canada to a Muslim Pakistani couple, Malik attended the AlMaghrib Institute and obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Islamic Studies.

To connect his passion for IT programming with his Muslim faith, he moved to the US from Canada, where he held leading positions at General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler in Michigan...

Billboard Educates Americans on Prophet Muhammad

CHICAGO – GainPeace, a Chicago-based nonprofit organization, has launched a new campaign titled “Truthful Man” to educate Americans on the true manners of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and countering a hate campaign that went up last month.

“There had been some recent attacks targeting Muslims in Chicago and across the nation. Islamophobia at times stems from the lack of education about Islam and Prophet Muhammad or education from unreliable sources,” Sabeel Ahmed, executive director of GainPeace, said in a statement cited by IndyStar on Thursday, July 20.

“Thus, we want to offer our fellow Americans an opportunity to learn the true teachings of Islam from its main source, the Qur’an.

“Previous educational campaigns of GainPeace have generated numerous calls of support and building of alliances with interfaith groups, minority groups, and neighbors.” ...

Maryland Mosque’s Charitable Clinic Serves Everyone

MARYLAND – Much like other clinics in the US, the Muslim Community Center (MCC) Medical Clinic in Silver Springs, Maryland, is well equipped with state-of-the-art medical services, but it is also unique for offering all these services for free.

“This is a charitable clinic, but… we want it to look like any other clinic in the USA,” Dr Rashid Chotani, executive director of the MCC Medical Clinic, told Dawn.

“We serve the entire community, not the Muslim community alone.”

Serving people from all faiths, groups and geographical zones, the clinic’s staffers from around the world try to communicate with these patients in their native languages...

US Muslim Group Offers Students Free School Supplies

SANTA CLARA – A leading American Muslim organization hosted on Sunday, July 30, an open day to offer vulnerable students preparing to get back to school new supplies, in the 10th event planned in a row.

“The first day of school can be embarrassing for some of the kids, a reminder that they are different,” Bhawana Kamil of the Muslim American Society, told Mercury News.

“This is not just giving them stuff, it’s helping them feel that they’re on the same level as everyone else in the class, to give them confidence, and feel normal — something in their life is the same as the other kids.”

Sunday’s event is the Muslim American Society’s 10th annual Back to School Backpack Project, which aims to equip underprivileged and vulnerable children with the tools needed to go back to school just as prepared as their peers...

Small Muslim Grants Push Back Hate Rhetoric

CHICAGO – Awarding grants to small nonprofits and organizations focused on American Muslims, the Pillars fund has been gaining national attention for pushing back against anti-Muslim rhetoric.

“American Muslims are eager to push back against caricatures and intolerance and support each other on the ground,” stated Inside Philanthropy, a national trade publication for nonprofits, Chicago Sun Times reported.

“The Pillars Fund is one grantmaker that’s been leading the charge from within the Muslim community.”

The Pillars Fund, cofounded by Kashif Shaikh, awards grants to small nonprofits and organizations focused on American Muslims.

It’s so unique that Kellogg Foundation, among the nation’s largest philanthropies, recently donated $300,000. Pillars has partnered with Aspen Institute to discuss diversity in nonprofits.

The group’s work received national attention after the election of President Donald Trump and the increase in anti-Muslim attacks that followed...

Know Your Neighbor (A Muslim Response to Charlottesville Violence)

This widening polarization in our country dissolves friendships and family relationships and fractures communities across lines of difference.

Perhaps worst of all, it impedes rational discourse about the problems that afflict our society. And as we witnessed in Charlottesville, when it involves hate groups calling for race supremacy, it can be deadly.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

We don’t have to scream and beat and murder each other in the name of ideology. We can disagree without dehumanizing.

The events in Charlottesville should be a call to action for reaching out across our deep divisions with civility, especially with those whose views we find abhorrent.

You can’t scan a major newspaper these days without reading a headline like “Racist meets with people he once hated, finds out they both love the same hobby.”

We can and do change our minds about our fellow citizens but it takes commitment to both the means and the end. The means is respectful dialogue, which is critical in strong, pluralistic democracies like ours.

The end is addressing differences of opinion and debating policy, but that can only happen after establishing a baseline of common humanity...

Imam Opens Heart About Being Muslim

STRATFORD – Attending a presentation about Islam in Stratford, Connecticut, Barbara Heimlich recognized for the first time the similarity between Islam and other Abrahamic faiths.

“I never realized how close Islam is to Judaism and Christianity as well. All faiths seem to have essentially the same believes — they are just expressed in different ways,” Heimlich said after a presentation by Imam Sami Abdul Aziz, Stratford Star reported on Tuesday, August 15.

“I learned a lot,” she added.

Abdul Aziz, the religious leader of the Bloomfield Muslim Community Center, gave a presentation about Islam at the Baldwin Center earlier in August.

Speaking to an audience of about 125 people, the Muslim chaplain at Wesleyan University discussed the five pillars of Islam, how Muslims pray, how a mosque operates, the difference between Shiite and Sunni Muslims, and misconceptions on how the religion treats women.

Audience members asked questions, such as on Sharia law, and Abdul Aziz showed a few short videos.

Stratford Senior Services Director Diane Puterski, who invited Aziz, said people should have accurate information about a religion.

“There are too many stereotypes out there,” she said. “He helped to clarify some of the myths. We need to bridge our gaps.”...

Muslims’ Show of Solidarity in Charlottesville

VIRGINIA – As Americans remain shocked of the recent neo-Nazi march in Charlottesville, Virginia, members of the Muslim community were among the early responders, participating in interfaith vigils and promoting a message of unity.

“Hate is hate,” said David Ramadan, a former Republican member of the Virginia House of Delegates.

“In the white supremacist mind there is no difference between an Arab and a Jew, between a Muslim and a black man, between an Asian and a Latino,” Ramadan, who has Lebanese roots, told The National...

American Muslims Mark Solar Eclipse with Prayers

WASHINGTON DC. – As many Americans anticipate the spectacular scenes of solar eclipse, a leading Islamic civil rights group has called on Americans of all faiths and backgrounds to offer prayers and to make charitable donations to help those in need during Monday’s natural phenomenon.

“At this time of growing societal divisions and rising support for un-American intolerance, we are all greatly in need of prayer and contemplation,” said Nihad Awad, National Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), in a statement sent to AboutIslam.net.

“We urge all Americans to use the opportunity provided by Monday’s eclipse to offer prayers based on their own faith traditions and to donate to organizations or institutions that help those in need.” ...

US Muslim Kids’ Team Wins Robotics Competition

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – A team of Muslim children in Albuquerque, New Mexico has won an award at a robotics competition, crowing efforts to engage the young children with the wider community.

“We’re here to inspire kids, and especially Muslim kids, that they can do whatever they wish,” team leader Safa Kassem, 14, told Albuquerque Journal on Monday, September 18.

Kassem added the experience has served not only as something to put down on her résumé but also as a way to encourage other children.

The team idea started when Mohamed Ebeida, a computer scientist at Sandia National Laboratories, wanted a way to teach programming to kids.

At the beginning of 2016, he gathered around 30 kids ages 6 to 14 from the Islamic Center of New Mexico in Albuquerque and started teaching them the basics of computer programming and robotics...

Faith, Charity Drive Muslim Relief Workers

FLORIDA – Motivated by their desire to help their neighbors and fulfill the key Islamic tenet of charity, Muslim volunteers were always present when hurricane Harvey and Irma bettered US states of Texas and Florida.

“Charity is a big part of Islam, and giving back to the community is a big part of Islam,” says Aqsa Cheema, administrative coordinator for ICNA Relief South Florida, Voice of America reported.

Cheema, 22, a generation Pakistani-American who assisted with Irma relief, says she has been in the habit of giving back since she was a kid, attending mosque.

“You go along with it, and you get the chance to distribute food and do things that can benefit the community,” she says.

“That’s just a basic part of the religion.” ...
