Growing up in New York, Rahim overcame poverty, converted to Islam, and built a family and stellar career.

Oakland Mayor Plans Key Speech at Islamic Center

OAKLAND, California – Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf will give the annual State of the City address next month at the Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California, for the first time in the history of the state.

“I’m very excited to make a statement that Oakland is a sanctuary city in every sense of the word,” Schaaf told KTVU on Friday.

“I’m so grateful that the Muslim community is inviting us into their house. We are one family.”

Shaaf’s speech will be the first for such a speech outside of the walls of City Hall and the first time at an Islamic center.

The gesture was praised by Payman Amiri, board chairman of the center, who said that it “cultivates an exchange of ideas about Islam through art, culture, and education programs.”...

Missouri Hosts Great Muslim Food Fest

MISSOURI – The Muslim community in Missouri hosted on Sunday, October 15, the Great Muslim Food fest, offering non-Muslims a chance to know their Muslim neighbors by speaking “the international language of food.”

“We all know that people across the world have come together and broken bread as a way to get to know each other,” Faizan Syed, the executive director of Council on American-Islam Relations of Missouri, or CAIR-MO, told Columbia Missourian.

“Today, we live in a country where misconceptions and hatred of Islam and Muslims is at an all-time high, which is what inspired us to hold the Great Muslim Food Fest.”

The event was co-hosted by the Islamic Center of Central Missouri, MU’s Muslim Student Organization and the Council on American-Islam Relations of Missouri, a nonprofit civil rights and advocacy group...

California Governor Signs Act Barring ‘Muslim Registry’

CALIFORNIA – American Muslims have applauded Governor Jerry Brown’s signing of the California Religious Freedom Act (SB 31), which blocks the creation of any so-called Muslim registry should President Trump choose to act on a proposal he repeatedly suggested during his 2016 campaign.

“We applaud Governor Brown’s commitment to preserving the civil liberties of all Californians,” Yannina Casillas, Legislative and Government Affairs Coordinator of the California office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CA), said in a statement sent to AboutIslam.net.

“Today, California took a proactive stance in protecting the civil liberties and religious freedoms of all Californians. With the signing of SB 31, Californians know that our great state will stand up to any federal policy that targets vulnerable communities.”...

Omaha Muslims Break Bread with Officers

OMAHA – Two years after the Islamic center in Omaha, Nebraska, was vandalized in a hate attack, Muslims and law enforcement officers have developed a special relation of mutual understanding.

“We all sat at the same table and shared our life stories,” Angela Reza told KMTV on Saturday, October 21.

Reza was talking during a luncheon hosted by the Islamic Center of Omaha.

Members of the Omaha Police Department, Department of Justice, ACLU and FBI attended the event.

Saturday’s event is not the first to be hosted by the center, which has been hosting community events for a few years.

Members say hate crimes like vandalism two years ago have actually brought out a wonderful and encouraging response from the Omaha community as a whole.

Craig Schnackenberg, a supervisor of the Omaha FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, says relationships help keep everyone safe.

“Doing this kind of outreach and meeting with the public is one of the most important things we can do,” he said...

DENVER – Muslim volunteers gathered on Saturday, October 28, to pack and distribute 2000 lunches to homeless people across Denver, Colorado, as part of an event held across 20 cities.

Record Number of US Muslims Run for Office

WASHINGTON – To the surprise of many analysts, the American administration’s rising anti-Muslim actions have backfired, with many American Muslims deciding to join the race for Congress nationwide instead of hiding in low-profile lives.

“The chances of these folks winning their elections is still one in three or one in five,” Hamza Khan, director of the Pluralism Project and a Democratic candidate for state delegate in Maryland, told BuzzFeed on Tuesday, adding that he doubted any Muslim could “slam dunk” a race this year.

“But in the next election, one cycle from now, we’re going to have candidates who have gone through the experience and they will slam dunk it.”

In an unprecedented surge, Muslim political and advocacy groups have tallied dozens of names of Muslims running for office nationwide this year.

In Maryland alone, around 30 Muslims vied for state and local seats, a huge leap from the mere three who ran in 2014, according to the Pluralism Project, a political action committee that formed this year to boost Muslim candidates...

Muslims to Nice Minnesotans: Offend Us

MINNESOTA – Seeking to bridge the gap between different faiths, the Minnesota Muslim community will be holding a special event to receive questions from the public fearing that asking questions might offend their Muslim neighbors.

“We have a long-held belief that if you have a question of your Muslim neighbors, you should ask your Muslim neighbors,” Jeremy Ringsmuth, from UniteCloud no-profit group, told SCTimes on Saturday.

“Minnesota Nice” sometimes means Minnesotans don’t ask uncomfortable questions, preferring to remain uninformed than to offend someone.

This attitude kept Central Minnesota’s Muslim and non-Muslim communities apart.

To change this, UniteCloud is hosting an event on Monday at First United Methodist Church of the St. Cloud Region in Sartell.

The event, titled “I don’t mean to offend you, but … “, would welcomed people to ask these uncomfortable questions.

Panelists will discuss how Islam has affected their lives personally and professionally...

Texas Muslims Donate Blood to Church Shooting Victims

TEXAS – A leading American Muslim civil rights group called on the Muslim community to donate blood on Sunday, following news of San Antonio’s mass shooting in which more than 26 victims were killed.

“During times of tragedy and heartache, all Texans must, and will work together to help alleviate suffering and to offer material and spiritual support for one another,” Sarwat Husain, the president of San Antonio chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-San Antonio), said in a statement sent to AboutIslam.

“We pray for the loved ones of those killed in this senseless attack and for the speedy recovery of the wounded.”...

Islamic Free Clinic Serves San Bernardino Poor

SAN BERNARDINO – Giving a shining example of the teachings of Islam and compassion towards the sick, Muslim doctors at Al-Shifa clinic in San Bernardino have been offering help to the poor residents over the past 17 years.

“We are Muslims and we want to help the community,” Dr. Talat Khan, director of Al-Shifa Clinic, told Voice of America on Wednesday.

“It does not have to be the Muslim community because most of the people we see are Hispanic and people of other faiths. We want to help them out. Our religion tells us that we should take care of under-served,” Khan added.

Founded in 2000, the clinic, which means cure in Arabic, has been offering a much-needed help in one the poorest cities in California.

The free service is provided by a team of dedicated Muslim physicians and volunteers, most of who came to the US as refugees or immigrants...
