American Muslims: US more Islamic than many Muslim nations

Feisal is founder of the Cordoba Initiative, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving Muslim-West relations and promoting moderation. In his new book, Defining Islamic Statehood, he talks about contemporary Muslim life in America.

“Many Muslims feel the United States of America, for them, living in this country is far more Islamic than many countries they come from, and I certainly share that opinion myself.” The Imam was born and raised in the United States...

Muslim Flowers Break California Barriers

IRVINE – A group of Muslim residents of Irvine city, Orange County, California, have organized a “Meet a Muslim” event in a shopping center, handing out flowers to passersby in a bid to dispel stereotypes about their faith.

“I just wanted people to know that I’m a Muslim man, and I’m just like every other man,” said Haseeb Rahman, who grew up in the Bay Area and is raising a family in Irvine, KPCC reported on Wednesday, January 20.

“I love sports, I have children, I love doing fun things… and I want them to not be afraid.”

Rahman was one of about 50 volunteers who gathered last Saturday at the Irvine Spectrum shopping center as part of a “Meet a Muslim” event.

The event aimed at dispelling negative stereotypes about Muslims in the wake of recent attacks.

While some shoppers did not pay attention to the Muslims’ stand, others waved hello and some approached to make Muslim friends...

Lively Meet a Muslim events seek to break down barriers

When she launched the event, Shaiq chose local coffee shops as a neutral place and thought maybe a few people would show up. If not, she figured, she’d sit, have some coffee and get some work done.

The first night of Meet a Muslim, which she advertised on Facebook and in Bay Area newspapers, was held in January — and Shaiq’s expectations were blown away.

Around 100 people, mostly non-Muslims, came to Suju’s Coffee & Tea.

Now, she plans on holding them for as long as people come. Her next event, on Monday, is at a Round Table Pizza shop in Fremont...

Bay Area Muslim Dialogue Breaks Barriers

Weeks before President Barack Obama suggested that Muslims should speak out to change wrong perceptions filled out by media, Moina Shaiq, a Bay Area American Muslim, decided to start by herself, organizing lively meet a Muslim events to break down barriers.

“I thought, how do I reach out to ordinary people on the street … who want to meet a Muslim face-to-face and be able to ask any question without being judged or intimidated?” she told San Francisco Chronicle.

“I have heard this time and time again, where people say that they have never met a Muslim.”

Seeing increasing attacks targeting Muslims, and build on misconceptions, Shaiq decided to start a new initiative to change the perception of American Muslims...

Muslims Meet Neighbors in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH – People of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, are planning a series of events to express solidarity with the Muslim community, launching the first event later this month by inviting people to visit their Muslim neighbors.

“We take an active anti-racist stance, and Islamophobia is no different,” Marnie Fritz, staff member at the Thomas Merton Center, told Next Pittsburgh on Tuesday, February 9.

“Oftentimes,” Fritz added, “when you’re talking to people who are saying racist or bigoted comments, it’s just out of ignorance or not knowing somebody on a personal level.”

Titled, “Meet Your Muslim Neighbor Potluck”, the event is planned on Wednesday, February 17th, at the Merton Center’s headquarters.

The Islamic Center of Pittsburgh will provide the food, and guests are encouraged to bring a dessert or non-alcoholic beverage.

It is the result of cooperation between Thomas Merton Center and the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh who partnered for a series of events...

American Muslims Take on Hate With Love

A young activist at a Take on Hate rally in Washington D.C.

DEARBORN – Seeing themselves on the defensive corner over the past two years, a growing number of Muslims are pushing back against bigotry and misconceptions by sharing contributions of Arab and Muslim Americans to help their society.

“We’re trying to shift the narrative and show that we have much more in common than we have in differences,” Asha Noor, the engagement specialist for Take on Hate with Love, told The Arab American News on Thursday, February 11.

A group of American Muslims, Take on Hate, will launch a social media campaign, from February 8 through Valentine’s Day, to showcase the contributions of Arab and Muslim Americans.

Titled, “Take on Hate with Love”, is planned to fight prejudice by love.

“We wanna highlight the individuals who have risen above that hate by choosing love and solidarity and acceptance,” Noor, a Virginia native, who moved to Metro Detroit about a month ago, said.

Tampa Muslims open doors to spur conversations

TAMPA — Members of one Tampa mosque are hoping to bridge the gap between Muslims and the rest of the community by combatting stereotypes and starting conversations.

On Saturday, Alqassam Mosque at 5910 E 130th Ave. hosted an open house, inviting people to come ask questions and find out more about Islam.

Mohammad Sultan, a retired imam, or spiritual leader, said a lot can be done to knock down cultural fences and dispel cultural stereotypes in a simple conversation.

“We are neighbors. We live and work together everywhere,” he said. “It’s nice to know each other and it’s sad that we try to separate ourselves because of race or religion.”

Tampa Bay area residents were invited to the mosque Saturday to speak with Muslims, observe prayer, share a meal and ask questions. Sultan said in his experience, locals have embraced Tampa’s Muslim population, but he sees how the actions of a handful of extremists can reflect on ordinary Muslims...

Muslim Hip Hop Artist Challenges Islamophobia (Video)

In a video posted on YouTube under the title #ColorBlind, Muslim hip hop artist Abdullah Dahduli, known as Aye-D, has challenged Islamophobia in him community, using his music to send a message against extremism and hate.

The decision to write a mashup of Adele Hello came after he, his family and friends experienced discrimination in North Texas and across the US.

The problem maximized after terror attacks on Paris last November when many xenophobes began spewing their anti-Muslim rhetoric and anti-Muslim protesters hanged around mosques and Islamic centers.

“That was crazy. Basically, these people were lined up on the curb, screaming out racial slurs,” Aye-D told Dallas Observer.

“I’ve felt hate before, but not to my face like that. That builds up a certain feeling of, ‘Man, we’ve got to do something.’” ...

US Muslim Girl Achieves Perfect SAT Score

WASHINGTON – Marium Raza, an American Muslim junior student at Redmond High School in Western Washington, has achieved perfect score on the SAT, offering an inspiration to Muslim students worldwide, LUB Pak reported.

The young American Muslim is the daughter of Pakistani immigrants who settled in US years ago.

The achievement makes her one of the few students, less than 0.01%, worldwide who achieve a perfect score.

Marium is interested in genetics and human health, and wants to major in something along those lines.

She also wants to make future studies about anthropology and the social and ethical aspects of biology.

The young girl’s achievements were not limited to high school grades.

She has volunteered at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle, since last September where she ran the concierge cart...

Defending Muslim neighbors around the Bay Area

Some 250 supporters gathered at the Islamic Society of the East Bay in Fremont on February 28 and heard messages of encouragement and support from speakers including Mayors of Fremont and Palo Alto, State Senator Bob Wieckowski, religious leaders from Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, and Jain communities, peacemakers and interfaith leaders from around the Bay Area.

Holding hands in a circle around the courtyard of the mosque, the group affirmed their solidarity and connections to their Muslim neighbors.

They then gathered around the Peace Pole that had previously been installed on the property shared by the mosque and a Methodist church for a candlelight vigil and commitment to standing together.

Milwaukee Muslim Film Festival Opens

MILWAUKEE – Wisconsin Muslims opened the 2nd annual Milwaukee Muslim Film Festival on Thursday, March 3, not only as a way to educate people on their religion, but also as a way to discuss current events important to Muslim communities.

“We’re particularly seeing that some of the individuals themselves that had been very gung-ho about Guantanamo Bay at the beginning really had a change of heart realizing that when you’re dealing with war there are so many uncertainties,” Janan Najeeb, film festival coordinator and President of the Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition, told CBS 58.

“And you may also actually have individuals who are innocent who are being put through these types of trials,” she added.

The festival, coordinated by the Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition, will be showing five films during the next few weeks...
