Muslim Aid Builds Oklahoma Bridges

OKLAHOMA – Despite facing tough days under a devastating storm in Oklahom, the Muslim community have rushed to help clear up their central state, in an effort to build new bridges with their neighbors.

"As Oklahomans, we're part of this community, and our hearts just break for what happened," Adam Soltani, executive director of the Oklahoma chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CIAR), told Religion News Service (RNS).

"We want to show the compassion and mercy that Islam teaches us."...

US Muslims Thriving, Charitable: Study

A new study on San Francisco Bay Area Muslims have found a tremendously diverse community that is civically engaged, well educated, and makes charitable and volunteer contributions at a rate much higher than the national average.

“Nearly 250,000 Muslims–one of the highest concentrations of Muslims in the country–live, study, volunteer, work and contribute to the economies and communities of the Bay Area,” the study released by the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU), says.

“This benchmark study provides historical, religious, and cultural context for a community that is often misunderstood and misrepresented – in our schools and communities.”

The study; “The Bay Area Muslim Study: Establishing Identity and Community,” was released by authors Farid Senzai, assistant professor of political science at Santa Clara university, and Hatem Bazian,  a senior lecturer in the department of Near eastern and ethnic studies at university of California, Berkeley.

Surveying more than 1,100 Bay Area Muslims, the study provides valuable data on the San Francisco Bay Area Muslim community’s demographics, sense of identity, economic well being, political and civic engagement, and challenges...

Muslim college carves niche in USA

Until Zaytuna opened its doors three years ago, American Muslims who wanted to study and grow in their faith mostly had to look overseas for a college education. That left students unprepared to engage with the U.S. culture to which they would return, say Zaytuna's founders, well-known Islam scholars Hamza Yusuf, Zaid Shakir and Hatem Bazian.

The college grew out of the non-profit Zaytuna Institute, founded in 1996 as a local community organization.

Courses include Islamic theology and law, and they also cover the classic liberal arts, such as logic, rhetoric and astronomy. Students learn Arabic and study the Koran. And they read Western authors such as Aristotle, Einstein and Robert Frost.

The school, which raised $7 million last year, is funded by individual Muslim donors and tuition revenue. Tuition last year was $11,000, slightly less than the $12,192 UC campuses charged California-resident undergraduates.

Today, 31 students are enrolled, and 15 more have been accepted for the fall.

"Everybody here, I think, has a curiosity about their religion, and they're open-minded," says Chris Cusano, 30, who converted to Islam 10 years ago and expects to be part of the school's first graduating class next spring.

Cusano already had bachelor's and master's degrees in political science and economics but says "I felt I needed to know more about Islam to really be genuine in what I was doing."

In that regard, Zaytuna both fills a gap in U.S. higher education and follows tradition...

California Islamic Concert Inspires Youth

Offering Muslim youth a halal alternative, an Islamic center in Sacramento, California, is planning a first of its kind concert that will host Muslim hip-hop artists, poets, singers and classical musicians.

"It's kind of risky. It's something we have not done before," Imam M.A. Azeez of Salam Islamic Center, which organized the evening at the Crest, told The Sacramento Bee on Saturday, June 15.

"It represents a paradigm shift in the Muslim community.

“Kids are listening to this stuff, so why not be proactive and expose them to beautiful, inspiring music that promotes love of religion and country?"

Held today at the Crest Theatre, the concert is titled "An Islamic Expression of Traditional & Contemporary Art."

The event was first suggested to bridge the generation gap and show the community that all kinds of music from punk to traditional can be found in Islam nowadays, event organizer Rihana Ahmad said.

The event is the first of its kind for American Muslims...

Islamic Center of San Gabriel Valley opens new mosque

After four years of construction and $5.5 million in fundraising, the Islamic Center of San Gabriel Valley formally opened its soaring new mosque Saturday.

For Muslim worshipers, the transformation of their prayer space from a dilapidated church next to a smelly chicken farm purchased three decades ago to a 45,000-square-foot structure complete with a school, mortuary, health clinic and three libraries marks a coming of age for their community...

Chaplains Fulfill US Muslim Needs

Catering to the religious needs of US Muslims students, a growing number of Muslim chaplains are being appointed in American universities to spread understanding of mainstream Islam to counter media stereotypes.

Muslims Feed Needy Canadians in Ramadan

TORONTO – Canadian Muslims have launched a campaign to feed the hungry in Toronto, Canada’s largest city, during the holy fasting month of Ramadan, due to begin Tuesday, July 9, in North America.

“The campaign asks those who are fasting to donate the money they are saving for the month - lunch, coffee and snacks - to the ‘Give 30’ campaign in support of Daily Bread Food Bank,” Ziyaad Mia, the founder of the ‘Give 30’ campaign, told OnIslam.net.

The campaign, which started last year, asks Muslims and non-Muslims to give up $1 a day —$30 for the month — to help those in Toronto who are hungry...

US Muslims Capture Ramadan in Photos

Muslims in California's Fresno valley are preparing for Ramadan with a special photography contest aiming at showing Islamic faith, interfaith unity and the spirits of the holy month.

"This is our busiest time of the year," Seyed Ali Ghazvini, the imam of the Islamic Cultural Center of Fresno, told Fresno Bee.

"Members that you don't see regularly during the year, you see them at Eid."

Anticipating for the start of the holy month of Ramadan, the Islamic center, the Valley's largest Muslim congregation, was preparing for a series of events though out Ramadan to bring Muslims together and unite them with non-Muslims.

The events emphasize the importance of depending upon God and giving to others...

Ramadan Iftars Bring Americans Closer

Bringing people of diverse backgrounds and national origins together, American Muslims are planning a series of events during the holy fasting month of Ramadan to build bridges with the larger community and correct misconceptions about their faith.

Muslim Films Promote Marriage in Canada

A landmark documentary series on marriage was released in North America this week at the start of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

“Divorce is on the rise in many communities and the traditional support structures that once sustained relationships are far fewer than before,” Jawad Jafry, the Producer-Director-Writer of the series, told OnIslam.net.

“Our objective was to create high quality content that could engage people effectively and help them easily access some essential strategies for a happy and successful marriage.”

The series titled ‘Marriage Success’ consists of ten documentary films about getting married and staying married.

“We've produced content for people thinking of marriage, newly married couples as well as married couples,” said Jafry.

“Our films will be available on the marriagesuccess.ca site in Ramadan as well as through our Facebook, Twitter and our YouTube Channel.

“The website also contains film notes, related articles, suggested reading and web resources,” added Jafry.

The films are grouped into two broad categories: Before Marriage and After Marriage.

The Before Marriage films deal with 6 of the most common issues in the early stages of married life.

The After Marriage films focus on four winning strategies that couples can learn or reclaim at any point in their lives to improve their relationships.

Each film presents well-known Islamic scholars, social work professionals and dramatic artists and focuses on a single issue, how this problem can affect marital relationships and advice on how to overcome it.

The project has been sponsored by the Canadian-based charitable organizations, Faith of Life Network...

America’s Muslim Future Leaders

Gathering young, enlightened, outspoken Muslim youth, a leading civil rights group has hosted its annual youth program designed to inspire American Muslim youth to increase their civic engagement and empower them to reclaim the image of Islam through positive social activism.

“This is the only leadership program of its kind in the Heartland which combines an American Muslim identity with our nation's rich civil rights tradition,” Adam Soltani, executive director of Oklahoma chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, told News Oklahoma.

“Our goal is to inspire future leaders to work together to make Oklahoma a better place for individuals from all walks of life.”

Ramadan Blessings Reaches US Homeless

Drawing a smile on the faces of those in need, Muslims in San Antonio, Texas, are bringing the joy and compassion of Ramadan the homeless, sharing special iftar meals and offering a better understanding of their faith.

“While it may be us that are serving you, it is you that allowed us to come and extended to us the hand of charity, and for that we thank you,” Sakib Shaikh, director of public relations for the Muslim Children Education and Civic Center (MCECC), told San Antonio Express-News on Monday, July 15.

Cooperating with the Muslim Cultural Heritage Society, the MCECC offered a special meal to some 300 members of the city’s homeless center “Haven for Hope”...

US Fasting Muslims Feed Hungry

Extending a helping hand to needy Americans, Oklahoma Muslims have specified special time to volunteer at the regional food bank to feed the hungry during the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

“It's very cool to be out here together,” Noran Abueisheh, 15, told The Oklahoman newspaper.

“We know it's important for us as a faith to get out and give back and so this feels nice.”

Abueisheh, 15, was one of more than 130 Oklahoma Muslims who volunteer Saturday at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City.

Feeling the pains of those in need, fasting has prompted these women to give back to their community.

Abueisheh, a Westmoore High School student, gathered with other Muslims at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City, bagging rice from a huge box into individual packets.

She said she felt good to get out and serve her community.

Ramadan, the holiest month in Islamic calendar, started in North America on Tuesday, July 9...
