Maryland Muslims Distribute Eid Meat to Locals

MARYLAND – Muslims living in Maryland, the US, are sharing the happiness and joy of their `Eid Al-Adha celebration with non-Muslims, distributing the meat of their Udhiyah [sacrifice] to the poor and needy.

The video, published by Voice of America on Thursday, August 30, shows a local Muslim organization in a residential area in Silver Spring, Maryland, distributing more than 2700 kilos of meat to the community.

`Eid Al-Adha, or “Feast of Sacrifice”, marks the end of the Hajj season and is one of the two most important Islamic celebrations, together with Eid Al-Fitr.

A financially-able Muslim sacrifices a single sheep or goat or shares with six others in sacrificing a camel or cow as an act of worship during the four-day `Eid Al-Adha celebrations.

The ritual commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail to Allah as an act of obedience and submission.

The Udhiyah meat is divided into three equal parts, one each for one’s own family, friends and the poor...

US Muslims Explore Mosque Problems, Solutions at ISNA Conference

Speaker Ihsan Bagby is an associate professor in the Department of Islamic Studies at the University of Kentucky. He said American mosques can make one simple change if they want their place of worship to more closely resemble that of the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) – make offering salaams a priority.

“When you walk into the masjid you should feel a sense of community and of welcoming,” he said. He related a story of when he visited a new mosque. He said it took a month before anyone spoke to him or greeted him with “Salaam.”

“This isn’t right,” he said. “We have to make our masjids more welcoming, you need people at the door who give salaam when people come in and when they leave.”...

NY Councilman Launches Muslim Empowerment Initiative

NEW YORK – New York City councilman and council speaker have announced dedicating $250,000 as a placeholder for a future Muslim Empowerment Initiative for the fiscal year 2019 in collaboration with the New York Immigration Coalition.

“As New York state’s sole Muslim elected representative, I’ve had the honor of working with these very organizations to advocate for our community and provide invaluable services,” said City Councilman I. Daneek Miller (D-St. Albans, Times Ledger reported.

The announcement, made by Miller and City Council Speaker Corey Johnson (D-Manhattan), was made at the Islamic Circle of North America in Jamaica, New York.

Speaking at the mosque, they said that the funds will benefit 14 organizations that serve the city’s Muslim population.

Miller and Johnson, in conjunction with the immigration coalition, partnered up to fight against the increased Islamophobia against Muslim Americans, which has risen by 19 percent since 2016, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigations...

US Muslim Students Raise Funds for Orphanages

WASHINGTON D.C. – Joining thousands of students across the globe, the Muslim Students’ Association (MSA) at George Washington University has decided to organize a weeklong event to raise money for orphans in seven countries, GW Hatchet reported on October 15.

“We reached out to other chapters in the District to garner interest in the fundraiser event since last semester. We hope to make an annual event,” said MSA President Abdullah Tauqeer.

The association will hold its first event between October 22 and 28 during the ‘Charity Week’; a worldwide campaign that raises money for orphanages and schools in countries like Somalia, Pakistan, and South Africa.

In fact, Charity Week is organized by Islamic Relief, an international humanitarian organization that provides aid, food security, and orphan support to people after natural disasters.

Members of the students’ association are planning to host 11 events, including a trivia night and bake sales, throughout the week...

Muslim Youth Reconnect with Community in Detroit Conference

DEARBORN, Michigan – About 2000 residents from across Michigan, Ohio, and Canada came together on October 13 in a day-long event organized by the American Midwest Leadership Council (AMLC) in partnership with MY-ICD (Muslim Youth of the Islamic Center of Detroit) as well as several faith centers, civic leaders, and youth organizations.

“We have over 600,000 Muslims in Michigan. We don’t have to go to Texas, or Chicago, or Toronto for a conference. We should be able to create our convention for our own community, and we proved that we could do that,” said Abdallah Sheik, President of AMLC, in a press release.

This year the conference focused on reconnecting Muslim youth, “through positive change.”

Hosting a galaxy of nationally and internationally renowned Muslim speakers, the conference aimed to inspire and mobilize the Detroit Muslim community by addressing pertinent and contemporary topics through lectures, discussions, and interactive workshops...

This American Filmmaker Is Breaking Stereotypes Everywhere

This is Iman Zawahry, a hijabi Muslim American filmmaker. Not only is Iman an outspoken filmmaker, she is also a college professor, zumba instructor, full-time mom, wife, and daughter, who tries to break down all the stereotypes a xenophobic person would have to say about her.

Between correcting papers for her Islam, Media and Pop Culture class and running the first American-Muslim film grant, Iman is also currently working on directing a feature film based on the critically acclaimed play, Dirty Paki Lingerie, with writer and actor Aizzah Fatima. Zawahry stated that, in a perfect world, she would like Tom Hanks to produce the film.

Iman’s film Tough Crowd won a Student Emmy Award and was a finalist for the NBC Comedy Short Cuts. Her movie Undercover won her the prestigious Princess Grace Award.

Hollywood & Muslims depiction

In an interview with the Washington Post, Iman talked about the xenophobia in America and Hollywood, from her perspective, of being a Muslim filmmaker in the United States...

New York’s Barnard College Introduces First Halal Dining Station

LEXINGTON – To meet the dining needs of Muslim students, a new halal food station will open in Barnard College Hewitt Dining Hall, New York after Thanksgiving break, Columbia Spectator reported on November 15.

“We pay for our dining plans, [so] we [should be able] to eat from school and not from the halal carts or outside sources,” said Yeliz Sezgin, Student Government Association’s Representative for Food and Dining Services of the Food Advisory Board which will create the new halal station.

“Because I knew that it was an issue, [and] because it pertained to me, I was able to address this… [and] to listen to what other [Muslim] students had to say,” he added.

The term ‘halal’ is commonly used for meat, but it also applies to other food products, cosmetics, personal care products, and pharmaceuticals which mustn’t be derived from non-halal sources like pork...

MUSLIM YOUTH VOICES presents stories that convey the richness and diversity of Muslim Americans.

Over the course of three summers in six cities across the country, Muslim youth were given the essential tools to tell their own stories on their own terms.

The workshops resulted in short films, amplifying these young people’s voices, and illuminating the many identities and experiences of youth and Muslim life in America.

MUSLIM YOUTH VOICES is a national initiative of the Center for Asian American Media.

https://worldchannel.org/show/muslim-youth-voices/

6 U.S. cities, 30+ films, and the many voices of Muslim Youth explore a mosaic of stories from young men and women starting December 10th on WORLD Channel and the PBS app.

The Muslim Youth Voices Project (MYVP) is a national initiative of the Center for Asian American Media, funded by the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art’s Building Bridges Program and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. MYVP amplifies young people’s expression and celebration of Muslim cultures by giving them the tools to tell their stories.
