Fasting US Muslims Volunteer at Food Bank

OKLAHOMA CITY – Showcasing the true spirit of giving in the holy fasting month of Ramadan, scores of fasting Muslim volunteers have participated in sorting food at Oklahoma food bank as they abstained from food and water from dawn to dusk...

"Ramadan is the holy month of Muslims. It's 30 days," Adam Soltani, the executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR)'s Oklahoma Chapter, told Oklahoma Fox on Sunday, July 20.

"You'd think it would be challenging, but  I think when you're fasting and your abstaining from food and drink, you want to find something to keep you busy and what better to keep you busy than doing something good for the community," Soltani said...

Iftar Brings Marylanders Closer

Residents of Maryland’s Harford County have been granted a special opportunity to members of the local Muslim community and learn more about Muslim culture and traditions during a special iftar during the holy month of Ramadan.

"I believe that education is the way that we will bring our community closer," Harford County Board of Education member Cassandra Beverley told visitors and members of the Harford County Education Society's Masjid Al Falaah who gathered before a prayer service.

Beverley was talking at a special iftar held by leaders of the Abingdon mosque.

"This is part and parcel of American culture," Dr. Rehan Khan, president of the Harford County Education Society and an Abingdon physician, said...

US Convention Empowers Young Muslims

DETROIT – Looking forward to empower a new Muslim generation in the US, preparations continued ahead of the launch of the 51st annual Islamic Society of North America’s annual convention from Aug. 29- Sept.1 in Detroit, Michigan, planning discussions for some of the challenges of shaping Islam’s future in North America.

“The baton is being passed to a new generation of Muslim activists, and there are new ideas and a different way of doing things,” Edgar Hopida, communications director for ISNA, told OnIslam.net.

“So we need to think about who’s going to step up and produce a viable American-Muslim community,” said Hopida.

This year’s theme is Generations Rise: Elevating Muslim American Culture.

According to Hopida, the topic is relevant to how the American-Muslim society is changing and how young people are making their mark.

“Several generations ago (they were) building mosques and basic institutions. Now we need to refine and get beyond by building civil rights organizations and people who produce culture like art and music,” he said.

Convention organizers said looking at how Islamic and Muslim culture fits into American society is a growing challenge for Muslims...

Muslim Ummah at ISNA Convention Heart

As tens of thousands of North American Muslims prepare to attend the annual convention of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), the organizers of the huge gathering have planned a rich program that focuses on the issues touching the wider Muslim ummah across the globe...

ISNA is the largest Muslim umbrella organization in North America.

This year’s event is held under the title “Generation Rise: Elevating Muslim American Culture”.

ISNA's four-day annual convention dates back to 1963, when the first such event was organized by the predecessor to ISNA, the Muslim Students Association of the United States and Canada.

Over the years, the convention has increased in popularity and consistently draws crowds of up to 40,000 Muslims in attendance each year.

Serving Houston community for more than 13 years, Ibn Sina Foundation caters to the needs of about 85,000 patients locally with its medical, dental and pediatric clinics.

West Virginia Students Try Muslims' Hijab

Offering West Virginia students in Marshall University a chance to try the Islamic headscarf, a group of Muslim students held a hijab event to raise awareness about the Islamic headscarf and correct misconceptions surrounding it.

“We want to revive the Muslim Student Association group because we haven’t been involved as much as we would like, lately,” Suzann Al-Qawasmi, graduate from Marshall University, who helped in coordinating the event, told Marshall Parthenon on Tuesday, September 16.

“So, we set up a table and brought scarves for girls to try on, just to see what it’s like. One girl said she still felt pretty even with the scarf on. That was the kind of reaction we were hoping for.”...

Virginia’s First Veiled Firefighter

RICHMOND – Taking up her new job as Virginia’s first veiled Muslim firefighter, the Richmond Muslim mother of two Kae Asima knew it will not be an easy task.

“I understand that people have questions and I embrace them,” Asima told ABC News on Wednesday, September 24, referring to daily questions about her religion.

For the single month of two, the dream of being a firefighter started when she was a child.

“I've always liked an action packed job and I love the physical aspect of the job,” said Asima.

Putting an Islamic headscarf, called hijab, the Muslim firefighter has always faced questions about her veil and whether she wears it while fighting fires.

“We have what is called a nomex hood that is flame retardant,” said Asima.

“I just put that on and I still look the same.”

Though being the only Muslim, Asima is one of 36 women who are firefighters in Richmond fire department...

Muslim Students Feed Michigan Homeless

As the winter approaches, Muslim students at Michigan State University have launched a new event titled “Project Downtown” to offer the homeless a free meal and reach out to the wider community.

“What we do is we make sandwiches for the homeless,” psychology sophomore and volunteer chair for Project Downtown Amal Mohamed told the State News on Monday, September 29.

“We provide them with water bottles and chips and cookies and string cheese. And then we wrap them up individually for them.”...

The project dates back to 2006 when MSA National and Project Downtown joined forces to combat the rising rates of homelessness in America...

US Muslims Rejoice "American" `Eid Al-Adha

HOUSTON – Whether it’s tailgating before a college football game, creating their own homemade decorations, or facing anti-Islam protestors on the way to prayers at their local mosques, American Muslims have worked to make `Eid Al-Adha in the United States their own unique celebration.

“Every urban area has big `Eid prayers,” Ibrahim Hooper, national communications director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, told OnIslam.net.

For Muslim revert Morgan Shuman, this year’s `Eid prayers were followed up with a true American tradition: college football...

US Muslims Show Gratitude

A leading US Muslim advocacy group has launched new social media hashtag campaign #MuslimsThank to show appreciation to media personalities, celebrities and political leaders who have come out in defense of Muslims and Islam.

As part of the new campaign, launched by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), online activists were asked to tweet messages of thanks to those who came in response to a rising tide of anti-Muslim bigotry and Islamophobia.

“@BenAffleck Thank you for standing up for basic human decency and opposing racism and Islamophobia #MuslimsThank #Islam #CAIR,” says a sample tweet by CAIR.

The advocacy group, the biggest group representing Muslims, suggested a list individuals, urging Muslims to thank including: Reza Aslan, Ben Affleck, Marc Lamont Hill, Michael Steele and Ayman Mohyeldin.

Other names include, Juan Cole, Miko Peled, Dana Branham, Russell Brand, Bernard Whitman, Tyler Harber, Nicholas Kristof and Dean Obeidallah...

New York Jews Reject Islamophobia

New York’s ‘Jews Against Islamophobia’ coalition has sent a powerful message against anti-Muslim rants in a new video, rejecting the increasing racism in the media as well as Islamophobic ads on subways and buses.

This video goes along with a new project of Jewish Voice for Peace, called the JVP Network Against Islamophobia.

“We are so pleased to share with you our new, very short video–Jews Recommit to Standing Against Islamophobia,” the announcement reads.

“While we have all been rightly concerned about the recent Islamophobic ads on NYC subways and buses, we recognize that Islamophobia extends far beyond those ads, and wanted to make that reality more visible within our community–the Jewish community– and more broadly.

We hope those watching the video will become inspired to take action together with the many, many individuals and groups inside and outside the Muslim community organizing against Islamophobia and standing for peace, for justice, and for dignity for all peoples,” the message concludes.

A recent report by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the University of California and Berkeley's Center for Race and Gender found that Islamophobia in the US is on the rise.

US Muslims’ Flowers Spread Peace

A Muslim community group in Buffalo, New York, has handed over free roses to passers-by, tagged with quotations from the three Abrahamic Prophets Muhammad, Jesus or Moses.

“The goal is to promote interfaith dialogue and create an environment where people of all faiths can come together with just a simple thing as a flower,” Dr. Samad Khan, a member of WNY Muslims organization, told Buffalo News on Monday, October 13.

“A flower is something human beings can really appreciate, it’s a simple gesture but a universal sign of love and harmony. And Christianity, Judiaism and Islam promote love, harmony and peace.”

Dr Khan and about a dozen of his Muslim colleagues put a table on Sunday in front of the Williams-Sonoma store on the lower level.

Handling passers-by roses, the group distributed 300 flowers in a two-hour period.

Some of those receiving the flowers said they were touched by the gesture.

“It’s always nice to get a rose, and it’s for a good cause,” said Christina Lesh, 36, of Buffalo...
