Latino Reverts Find Identity in Islam

MIAMI – Searching for identity away from home, a growing number of Latinos have been reverting to Islam, seeing its teachings and guidance as setting their lives in order.

“It defines their world on a clear grid of what’s permitted or 'halal,' and what’s prohibited which is 'haram.' So they know exactly where they stand," Stephanie Londono, who has a master's degree from Florida International University and has published a study about religious conversions by Latinas, told Voice of America on Saturday, October 18.

“So the Qur’an becomes this guidebook that tells you exactly what to wear, what to eat, how to wash, how to behave, when to pray,” she added.

Over the past decades, a growing number of Latino Americans has reverted to Islam.

According to estimates by whyIslam.org organization, about 6 percent of American Muslims are Latino.

Similar numbers have been confirmed by Latino American Dawah Organization (LADO), a group that promotes Latino conversions, which said that more than half of new reverts are female...

US Honors Muslim Champion of Change

A US Muslim woman will be honored on Monday, October 20, at the White House for her distinguished work on helping people to enroll in health insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act.

Khadija Gurnah is the Program Manager for the American Muslim Health Professionals’ (AMHP) Affordable Care Act outreach and enrollment efforts, the White House site reported.

Gurnah will be honored as one of the 13 Champions of Change on Monday.

Other champions are all recognized for their work on leading local efforts to advance the goals of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

The young Muslim woman earned her Master’s in Health Management from the Yale School of Public Health.

She has worked in community health, focusing on inequities in healthcare delivery, and has published papers and articles on healthcare delivery to minority populations.

Under Khadija’s direction, AMHP launched the first national grassroots initiative of its kind in the Muslim American community.

Despite of limited budget, AMHP seven organizers mobilized 81 partner institutions, resulting in thousands of enrollments and newly formed relationships between clergy and civic leaders across religious, ethnic, and racial lines...

Washington Hosts Prophet's Exhibition

WASHINGTON – Celebrating the 1443rd birthday of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), an Islamic calligraphy exhibition was opened in Washington a few days ago to reflect the true-values of Islam.

"This exhibition is quite meaningful and launched timely in terms of telling what Islam represents via the Qur’anic verses and deeds of our prophet, while Islam and its values is abused and misinterpreted in the world, particularly the Middle East," Turkish ambassador to Washington, Serdar Kilic, told Anadolu Agency on Saturday, November 1.

Titled “Love for the Prophet”, the exhibition showcases several paints by famous calligraphers, including Turkish.

Verses from the holy Qur’an, deeds of Prophet Muhammad and tablets on which the Prophet is identified are also presented by the exhibition hosted by the Turkish embassy. The exhibition will close on November 21.

Sponsored by the Islamic Culture and Art Platform, in cooperation with Yildiz Holding, a Turkish multinational, and the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), the exhibition was opened in Washington on Friday, October 31.

A similar exhibition was held last month in New York and was also co-organized by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA)...

Free Medical Care… Dream Realized by US Muslims

Over the past six years, a little dream to offer free medical services to people who cannot afford it has grown up to a successful clinic that has managed to reach out to patients of different faiths across Miami.

“I love coming here,” Janice McKinson, who lives in Pembroke Pines, told Miami Herald.

“They get me an appointment as quick as possible, and normally the wait isn’t very long. It’s great,” the 38-year-old woman who receives medical care at no cost added.

Back in 2008, members of the South Florida Muslim community founded the Miami Gardens clinic with the mission to provide medical care to those who are uninsured, do not qualify for governmental assistance, or who cannot afford private medical care.

Gaining people trust, services include free HIV/AIDS testing, vaccinations, pap smears, diabetic programs and pediatric care.

The clinic also works with pharmacies on getting patients reduced prices on prescription medications.

The UHI Community Care Clinic is open six days a week and is operated by a team of volunteers, which includes 32 physicians who serve 30-35 patients a day...

US National Cathedral Hosts Friday Prayer

Washington National Cathedral has announced plans to host Muslim Friday prayers this week, reflecting a solid interfaith relation between America’s Muslim and Christian faith leaders.

“We want the world to see the Christian community is partnering with us and is supporting our religious freedom in the same way we are calling for religious freedom for all minorities in Muslim countries,” Rizwan Jaka, a spokesman with the prominent ADAMS mosque in Sterling, Va., one of the co-sponsors of Friday’s service, told The Washington Post.

“Let this be a lesson to the world.”

Known for presidential funerals and other major spiritual services, the Cathedral hosts this week Friday, Jumm`ah, prayers for the Muslim community for the first time.

The Cathedral, part of the Episcopal Church, has a long history of high-profile interfaith events.

By hosting Friday prayer, organizers said Monday, November 10, that they are seeking to make a statement by having Muslim leaders come and hold their midday service in such a visible Christian house of worship...

Muslim Students Help Michigan Hungry

An annual event has brought together students from all races and backgrounds in the University of Michigan to fast a day, championing an initiative to raise money to feed the hungry.

“It was amazing to see people of all races and ethnic backgrounds come together in the school community for a good cause,” Ayesha Sheikh, a first time participant in 2Fast2Feed said, The Michigan Journal reported on Tuesday, December 2.

The ‘2Fast2Feed’ event, organized by the Muslim Student Association (MSA) was held on Thursday, November 20.

It has attracted more than 120 students who were eager to abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset.

Coming from across different ethnic groups, students wore purple, aqua blue shirts, and numbered bibs to the university.

At sunset, participants broke their fast together with an array of foods and desserts, sharing their stories about 2Fast2Feed as well.

The successful event raised about $1200 which went to local hunger relief organizations, like the UM-Dearborn Student Food Pantry, ACCESS, and Zaman International...

US Muslims Advocate Jeans for Teens

Students of a Muslim academy in New Orleans has advocated a new community service project for the needy, urging people to donate new or gently used jeans for teens in homeless shelters.

"Islam does not require Muslims to only focus on Muslims,'' Niran Mousa, leader of the Follow the Sunnah program, told Nola.com, a website of Times-Picayune  newspaper, on Tuesday, December 9.

“We are required to focus on all of society, to make sure that every one of our neighbors and children are taken care of,” she added.

The Muslim academy, at 440 Realty Drive in Gretna, has launched its new project to offer help to needy teens in homeless shelters.

Under the title, “Teens of Jeans”, the campaign started in in partnership with Aeropostale and DoSomething.Org.

The school's jeans drive is sponsored by the school's sixth grade Follow the Sunnah program.

According to members of the group, the students wanted to give back to the needy, following Prophet Mohammad's (peace be upon him) footsteps of giving back and doing good deeds to help others.

"This jean drive is a way for us to make sure that our community as a whole, especially our youth, has a chance at a sense of normalcy in their childhood,'' Mousa said...

THAI MUSLIM MOSQUE IN AZUSA IS A WORK OF FAITH

They walk to their car, looking at the stars, reminiscing about a journey that began 50 years ago and a world away from a low-slung neighborhood up against the Los Angeles foothills.

"This has been quite something, all we have gone through leading us here," says Rahmat Phyakul. With his wife, Sukatee, at his side, he points proudly to a tall green-and-white sign.

Masjid Al-Fatiha.

On the same sign, another message, this one in the flowing script of their native land. He pauses to translate: First Mosque Established by Thai Muslims in America.

"This place," he says, "it's our purpose in life."

Their journey began in early-1960s Bangkok, where they grew up.

Rahmat and Sukatee worked together, and often would head to lunch with a group of others. Only she'd break away briefly and come back with food he didn't recognize. "It's halal," she recalls telling him. "Muslim food. I'm Muslim."

Like the vast majority of Thais, he'd been raised a Buddhist.

It didn't take long for them to fall in love. Nor did it take long for them to discuss marriage. But she balked: She couldn't marry someone who wasn't Muslim.

By then he was falling for her religion too. He loved its values and simplicity, the firm belief in one, powerful God. In his family there were misgivings — among some who associated Islam with ignorance and aggression. But for him, Islam was the way of wisdom and peace.

In 1964, Rahmat became a Muslim and soon after married Sukatee. "The love of my life," he says, speaking softly as he usually does. "I could do none of what I have done without her."

Theirs isn't just a spiritual tale, it's a story of immigrants.

Soon after the wedding, they came to America, worked on their broken English, went to community college...

Muslims in SF hold vigil for Charlie Hebdo victims

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) --

Bay Area Muslims came together in San Francisco's Union Square Friday night to show sympathy and solidarity for the people of Paris and the shooting victims.

One by one, they lit candles and the flickering lights spelled out the word "peace".

Belmont resident Somayeh Nikooei said, "Muslims are peace loving people. And they are as sad and they feel the sorrow of everybody else who has been the victim of terrorism."

Bay Area Muslims wanted to do something to show they stand in solidarity with the people of Paris and to reject the notion that the killings at Charlie Hebdo were done in the name of Islam.

Hatem Bazian, Ph.D., is a professor at UC Berkeley and the chair of the Northern California Islamic Council. He was just in Paris last month, for an Islamophobia conference. He told ABC7 News, "What we need is to say, 'This is wrong, this is unacceptable and it has nothing to do with Islam in general.' We don't accept racism, discrimination, bigotry, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism in general and as such this is the moment for us to respond as a society, as a community."..
