Work less, get more: New Zealand firm's four-day week an 'unmitigated success

Reduced hours for same pay increased work-life balance by 24%, cutting stress levels and boosting commitment

The New Zealand company behind a landmark trial of a four-day working week has concluded it an unmitigated success, with 78% of employees feeling they were able to successfully manage their work-life balance, an increase of 24 percentage points.

Two-hundred-and-forty staff at Perpetual Guardian, a company which manages trusts, wills and estate planning, trialled a four-day working week over March and April, working four, eight-hour days but getting paid for five.

Academics studied the trial before, during and after its implementation, collecting qualitative and quantitative data.

Perpetual Guardian founder Andrew Barnes came up with the idea in an attempt to give his employees better work-life balance, and help them focus on the business while in the office on company time, and manage life and home commitments on their extra day off.

Jarrod Haar, professor of human resource management at Auckland University of Technology, found job and life satisfaction increased on all levels across the home and work front, with employees performing better in their jobs and enjoying them more than before the experiment.

Work-life balance, which reflected how well respondents felt they could successfully manage their work and non-work roles, increased by 24%.

In November last year just over half (54%) of staff felt they could effectively balance their work and home commitments, while after the trial this number jumped to 78%.

Staff stress levels decreased by 7 percentage points across the board as a result of the trial, while stimulation, commitment and a sense of empowerment at work all improved significantly, with overall life satisfaction increasing by 5 percentage points.

Helen Delaney, a senior lecturer at the University of Auckland Business School, said employees’ motivation and commitment to work increased because they were included in the planning of the experiment, and played a key role in designing how the four-day week would be managed so as not to negatively impact productivity.

“Employees designed a number of innovations and initiatives to work in a more productive and efficient manner, from automating manual processes to reducing or eliminating non-work-related internet usage,” said Delaney.

Andrew Barnes said he would take the results of the trial to the board to open up a discussion on how a four-day work week could be implemented long-term in his company.

Muslim Fisherman Saved 23 People from Matia Wildfires (trapped between the fire & the sea)

The sea was the only escape for many running for their lives as fires raged. Egyptian fisherman rushed to help.

Nea Makri, Greece - Mahmoud al-Sayed Mousa was relaxing on his couch when his phone rang at 6:30pm on July 23.

Wildfires had gripped the coastal village of Mati, and people were desperately wading into the sea to escape.

"Come quick," said Kostas, his boss.

The 46-year-old Egyptian fisherman rushed out of his home and climbed onto his bicycle.

He could see plumes of smoke shifting above the far-off shores, and pedalled as fast as he could.

Within moments, he arrived at the port in Nea Makri, where they dock their fishing vessel. They set sail.

"We heard that 150 people were trapped between the fire and the sea," he tells Al Jazeera.

Forceful waves swayed the boat. The wind carried the thick black smog out to sea, but they carried on, coughing more and more the closer they got to Mati's shores...

This Scottish café chain has built a village for the homeless

A cafe chain that employs homeless people and runs a scheme to provide free food to rough sleepers has gone a step further, building a village of 11 houses in Scotland.

Up to 20 homeless people will be given accommodation in the new village to the north of the Scottish capital Edinburgh built by Social Bite, which was set up in 2012.

"Something special has been created," said Angela Constance, the Scottish communities minister at the launch on Thursday.

"Not just building houses, but building homes, building community – a community that will provide support and enable folk to rebuild their lives."

Next month the first six residents will move into the village, which sits on land loaned by the Edinburgh city council for four years...

Canada: Teenaged Syrian refugee 'saved the day' after rescuing toddler from Hamilton rooftop

Khalid Tabateb, 18, also helped his father rescue a child who was shot when they were living in Syria

When Khalid Tabateb saw a toddler walking unsteadily along the edge of a Hamilton rooftop he didn't stop to think. He leapt into action.

The 18-year-old was driving past a King Street East apartment building with his father Wednesday when they saw the child wearing only a diaper, who had woken up from a nap, squeezed through a second-storey window and wandered out onto the rooftop...

When a dad needed a new kidney, his children's teachers donated theirs

When one father desperately needed a new kidney, two teachers from his daughter's school offered to donate their own — sparking a donor chain that saved not only his life, but seven others' lives, too.

"When you are a teacher, you feel like a part of these children’s lives," first-grade teacher Allison Malouf said. "Their daughter was like a child of my own. I didn’t want to see her without a dad... God gives you two kidneys, but you only need one." ...

Heroes from Sheffield mosque praised after rescuing women from burning flat

A witness living in the flat below told how the quartet rushed to help after the blaze broke out at the first-floor apartment in Broomhill shortly before midnight last night. She said they had climbed a wall and grabbed a ladder to reach the terrified pair before helping them to safety via a window.

The homes at Severn Court on Severn Road are all occupied by residents aged 55 and over. Pam Copas, who lives there, said it was not the first time members of the Muslim Welfare House of Sheffield, a neighbouring mosque and community centre, had come to their aid.

"If it hadn't been for their brave actions last night those women may well have died," said the 75-year-old, who works as a medical secretary at Sheffield Children's Hospital.

Every teacher in this school district was gifted $100 for school supplies by an anonymous donor

As teachers in a northern Kentucky school district headed back to work on Monday, they were in for a surprise.

Quite often teachers have to dip in their own pockets to buy necessities for their classrooms, but this year all 143 teachers in the Pendleton County school district were gifted $100 to use for supplies.

All thanks to an anonymous donation of $14,300 to the school district.

A district spokesperson told CNN affiliate WLWT that the teachers were surprised and touched by the much-needed donation as they embark on the new school year...

The un-celebrity president: Jimmy Carter shuns riches, lives modestly in his Georgia hometown

Carter has been an ex-president for 37 years, longer than anyone else in history. His simple lifestyle is increasingly rare in this era of President Trump, a billionaire with gold-plated sinks in his private jet, Manhattan penthouse and Mar-a-Lago estate.

Carter is the only president in the modern era to return full-time to the house he lived in before he entered politics — a two-bedroom rancher assessed at $167,000, less than the value of the armored Secret Service vehicles parked outside...

99-year-old man walks 6 miles a day to visit his wife in the hospital, proving true love does exist

A 99-year-old man from Rochester, New York, may restore your faith that true, lasting love does exist. His name is Luther Younger, and after 55 years of marriage, he is still deeply devoted to his wife, Waverlee, whom he calls the sweetest cup of tea he ever had.

Luther walks six miles round-trip every day — in the heat, rain and snow — to visit Waverlee in the hospital. He has become a local celebrity in Rochester and many people recognize him from his daily pilgrimage. Spectrum News Rochester first reported the loyal husband's story earlier this month and it gained widespread media attention...

Photo of deer hugging a firefighter near Burns Lake goes viral (Canada)

A photo of a deer hugging a firefighter near Burns Lake was shared on Facebook and has now gone viral.

Jan Giesbrecht captured the photo when she was driving firefighters to and from the Burns Lake fire camp, across Francois Lake.

“[On] Wednesday morning, I left [the] Burns Lake area with the day shift firefighters to take them to the south side,” said Giesbrecht in an email interview.

“I dropped them off with their trucks. The night crew was getting on to my bus in the south side ferry landing.”

She said the deer was just wandering around and walking up to people, looking for a pet.

He then came up to her bus and stepped up when the firefighters were getting on. Giesbrecht said the deer followed the bus to the ferry and even rode over to the other side.

The photo was taken on the ferry...
