After one woman saved Chicago's homeless from the cold, an army of strangers followed her lead

(CNN)A single act of generosity was multiplied again and again this week after a Good Samaritan paid for hotel rooms to shelter homeless Chicagoans from a historic and potentially deadly cold snap.

Donations of transportation, food and money flooded in after strangers learned that real estate developer Candice Payne had booked 20 hotel rooms at the Amber Inn motel.
"I had strangers from social media who are now lifelong friends helping me," she told CNN...

9-year-old boy collects coats help those in need in his New Jersey town

In the midst of the polar vortex, a 9-year-old from New Jersey is doing his part to make sure his community stays warm. With the help of his family, Sandro Cunningham started Sandro's Coat Rack — and he's been collecting and donating coats for the last two years.

Cunningham collects used coats through his Facebook page and drop-boxes at his school and a local dance center. He then sets up and stocks his coat rack, which he built with his father, Edward. They used to keep the coat rack outside of the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen, but it's now located across from the Trenton Police Station where Edward is an officer. Anyone walking by the rack can take or leave coats as they need.

Glasgow salon offers haircuts for homeless people

A hairdresser has opened up her salon to offer free haircuts to homeless people.

Susan McGorm, 34, is offering the cuts on Sunday in the hope that the small gesture will "perk up" the people who take up her offer.

Ms McGorm said she wanted to do something to put out some "good karma" and help in whatever way she could.

She said seeing people on the streets had "spurred her on" to do something in her local community...

Canada’s Oldest Mosque Shelters Winter Homeless

EDMONTON – The oldest mosque in Canada opened its doors on Wednesday, February 6, to shelter the needy and homeless of all faiths between 6 pm and 10 am as temperatures were expected to reach a chilling low of -43°C overnight, The Star reported.

“This is one of the coldest nights we’ve seen in Edmonton for ten years. We won’t stop until it’s safe enough and easier for people to deal with,” said Noor Al-Henedy, the communications director of Al Rashid Mosque in Edmonton, Canada.

She added the mosque will shelter people as long as temperatures remain frigid and will offer hot meals and necessities for those seeking refuge under its roof away from the overnight’s deep freeze which continues to grip much of the city...

Pret a Manger Is Opening a Hostel for Homeless People in London

It’s a “first for the food industry in the UK.”

Sandwich chain Pret a Manger has launched a hostel for people who have been homeless in London, in what it says is a “first for the food industry in the UK.”

The chain’s charitable foundation, the Pret Foundation, will reportedly be investing over £200,000 a year in the hostel, which is being run in partnership with West London Mission (WLM) — which works to empower people affected by homelessness, poverty, and trauma.

The Pret Foundation was established in 1995 “with the singular goal to break the cycle of homelessness,” and it’s funded by the sale of Pret products as well as by customer donations.

NASA: The world is a greener place than it was 20 years ago

Data from NASA satellites has revealed a counterintuitive source for much of this new foliage: China and India.

A new study shows that the two emerging countries with the world’s biggest populations are leading the increase in greening on land.

The effect stems mainly from ambitious tree planting programs in China and intensive agriculture in both countries...

Muslim Bikers on Charity Ride to Help Refugees

MELBOURNE – A group of Muslim bikers kicked off on Wednesday, February 13, a charity ride from Melbourne to Sydney to help raise awareness of the global refugee crisis, Anadolu Agency reported.

“The group will continue raising awareness and funds through the towns and cities they visit along the way, meeting with locals and youths including; Shepparton, Wagga Wagga, Goulburn, Wollongong, Auburn, and Padstow,” said Islamic Relief Australia, the international charity supporting the ride.

“We want to raise $50,000 for the Islamic Relief. We will raise it for people in need, the homeless, for those living under oppression and for orphans,” Salih Yigit, a Turkish biker with the group told AA.

Islamic Relief Australia is a member of the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) since 1984 and distributes humanitarian help around the region...

New Orleans Reduced Its Homeless Population By 90 Percent

Across the U.S., more than a half million people have been identified as homeless.

New Orleans faced a major crisis in homelessness following Hurricane Katrina. In 2007, two years after the storm, there were more than 11,600 homeless people in the city.

Since then, New Orleans stepped up its effort to tackle homelessness and has brought that number down 90 percent...

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar auctions off NBA championship rings and other memorabilia for STEM education

Fans can own a piece of NBA history thanks to Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The basketball great is auctioning off hundreds of pieces of memorabilia and including four NBA championship rings.

Much of the proceeds will go to his Skyhook Foundation, which brings STEM educational opportunities – science, technology, engineering and math -- to underserved communities.

"When it comes to choosing between storing a championship ring or trophy in a room, or providing kids with an opportunity to change their lives, the choice is pretty simple. Sell it all," Abdul-Jabbar wrote on his blog...

High school seniors shovel neighbor's driveway at 4:30 a.m. so she could make it to her dialysis

(CNN) When the weather forecast called for up to eight inches of snow in their New Jersey community, brothers Brian and Patrick Lanigan immediately thought of their neighbor Natalie Blair.

She depends on dialysis treatments -- and that meant the snowstorm could be a life or death situation.
Brian, who works as a local EMT, had shoveled the Blair family's driveway during a storm just a few days earlier, but he knew this time he would be on the job when the snowstorm struck...

Hijab wearing police officer's photo makes powerful statement in wake of Christchurch mosque shootings

First it was the image of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern wearing a hijab that captured the world's attention.

Now a photograph of a young female police officer guarding the Memorial Park Cemetery in Christchurch on Thursday is being shared widely.

It's a powerful image that combines solemnity, respect and protection.

Constable Michelle Evans is wearing a Calvin Klein scarf over her head, a red rose on her chest and is holding a Bushmaster semi-automatic rifle.
