Ghazali's Beginning of Guidance (Bidayat al-Hidaya)

By Mufti Abdur-Rahman ibn Yusuf (1/3)

Imam al-Ghazali’s Bidayah al-Hidayah is a highly motivational manual detailing the fundamentals of acquiring guidance through God-consciousness (taqwa).

Imam al-Ghazali argues that just as there is an end to this noble objective there is also a beginning to it, which must be made firm for one to achieve success. He then goes on to expound the fundamentals of this “beginning.”

While being concise and to-the-point the manual is laid out in the form of a detailed daily timetable providing the reader strong inspiration and much heart-rending counsel.

The three sections of this book are on obedience, refraining from disobedience, and the etiquette of companionship with the Creator and with creation.

One of Imam al-Ghazali’s final works, it embodies a lifetime of learning, experience, and spirituality and can be taken as an introduction to his larger works.

To BE DRESSED in the ATTRIBUTES of ALLAH

It has been said that the spiritual path of Islam known as tasawwuf, or Sufism in English, has been described as progressively becoming "dressed in the Attributes of God."

What this means is that only by increasingly cultivating our capacity for love, mercy, compassion, forgiveness, patience, forbearance, humility, light and beauty can we draw nearer unto the Divine Presence of the Eternal.

The superficial observance of forms and rituals is not enough to truly awaken and reach to Truth, but to truly benefit from the spiritual practices enjoined upon humanity, one must make sincere effort to purify the heart of all negativity and darkness.

If we fail to cultivate the spiritual excellence we are called to, we risk losing both in this life and the next. Yet by developing the character of a believer by sincerely and truly following the Prophetic Path, we can attain to the grace and divine pleasure of God, and be granted true success in this world and the hereafter...

Are You Worthy?

While we may not realize it, one of the greatest subconscious blocks we have that prevent us from experiencing joy, happiness, love, health and success in life is deep rooted fear and belief that we are inherently unworthy and undeserving.

Sadly, this mistake belief based in the idea of conditional love, is in fact counter to a true and healthy belief in the greatness and glory of God, who created human beings inherently worthy of love, abundance and prosperity.

In fact, it is the goal of Iblis (Satan) to misguide us into believing we are unworthy of God's love and support, and to thus inadvertently lead us into agreement with him and rebellion towards divine order.

It is extremely important to heal and correct this mistaken belief to not only experience joy, peace, happiness and love, but also to thus move towards the Divine Presence of God.

We must remember that we are inherently worthy not for any reason other than the fact that we have a loving, benevolent and divine God who created us out of love, mercy and compassion. We are worthy because He is Great. Allahu Haq. Allahu Akbar.

Islam is Positivity

Although it has become common to equate religion with the mere identification with a cultural bloc, Islam was during the time of the Prophet ﷺ first and foremost defined by spiritual excellence, which can be described as personal and cultural excellence as manifest in one's character.

Prior to the establishing of rules and regulations, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ spent nearly a decade simply in purifying the hearts and souls of his companions, and leading them to the truth and reality of Islam, namely, human beings of moral and spiritual excellence based in selflessness, light, love, compassion and goodness.

To be a Muslim by definition asks and requires of us to be, first and foremost, people of excellence, beauty and light.

These internal qualities of grace are the very manifestation of Islam, and without inner humility and piety, external forms can only lead to hypocrisy.

When Was The Last Time?

When was the last time you reconnected with the natural environment?

While we may not realize the inherent detriment of being exclusively confined to man-made environments, it is significant, and not spending time in nature takes a devastating toll on our health and wellness.

We are created from and are a part of the earth, and being disconnected from mother earth leads to an imbalanced constitution and an imbalanced life.

In this brief video, brother Ihsan shares a reminder to make the conscious effort to spend time in God's beautiful creation and maintain your connection with the earth, which will lead to a more grounded and balanced life in addition to alleviating the stress, anxiety, fear and worry that arises from the man-made world which leads to separation and disconnection.

Live Free: Okay - How?

Wisdom has become so cool that we are now, more than ever before, being increasingly inundated with a barrage of marketing messages seeking to give us life advice.

Yet it is not wise to get our guidance for life and living from products and their advertising which are essentially designed to appeal to the lower self while sounding legitimate and intelligent.

In this video, I share some insights on this phenomena and how you can be more aware of the subtle influence slogans, memes and marketing may have on your consciousness and upon the development of your loved ones.

To truly learn how to live free, we must remember that real freedom is freedom from the self and from the lower world, and that only by discipline and restraint, not the wanton and unbridled satiation of base desires, hunger and thirst, can a human being ever truly be free.

Rajab 2019 (1440 Hijri) Begins Thursday Night

The blessed and sacred month of Rajab begins Thursday evening, March 7, 2019 (1440 Hijri).

Rajab is a particularly special lunar month during which believers are encouraged to take advantage of with supererogatory worship including additional prayers, dhikr, meditation and fasting.

This particular year is even more blessed in that the first day of Rajab is a Friday, which is considered the holiest day of the week, and that the first night of Rajab (which precedes its day) is also Laylatul Raghaib, the night in which the light of the Prophet ﷺ was passed from his father to his mother.

Breaking Spiritual Silence

An important reminder by Sheikh Mokhtar

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion. (Surah Hadid, 57:20)

We are often reminded in the Qur'an that the world around us is filled with distractions that can keep us from realizing the true potential of our humanity. The modern world's incessant concentration on material and social pursuits has granted many of us with lots of possessions and ideas, yet we still feel empty inside.

Even as Muslims' identity appears galvanized in a response to an endlessly news cycle, Islamophobia and injustice, this reactive activism to those challenges in itself often paralyzes and distracts us from the pressing issues of the soul that are humanity's greatest need. In this session we will seek to examine how we can shed the weight from our hearts and unlock our spiritual potential.

How Much Should I Meditate Each Day?

A spiritual master was once asked by a disciple, "How many times a day need I meditate?"

The master replied, "At least once each day, unless you don't have time. In which case, you must meditate at least twice each day."

Time is relative, and the belief that time is scarce, in addition to the rush that accompanies this belief, only results in the progressive lack of time and the loss of blessings.

In this video, brother Ihsan explains some of the principles and reasons why to meditate at least once each day, unless you don't have enough time to do so, in which case you should meditate at least twice each day 🙂

Topics covered include:

• How long should one meditate daily.

• The importance of slowing down and developing the capacity for transcendence.

• The importance of meditation in Islam.

• How Islamic meditation deepens and makes real al-Islam.

• The awakening of the heart and heart-based consciousness.

• How technology contributes to rush and the loss of blessings in time.

• How to overcome ghaflah, the state of unconsciousness and hypnotic rhythm.

• Best times for meditation and spiritual practice.

• The veil of identifying with a cultural bloc.

• The equality of all human beings and that which differentiates them.

• The importance of taqwa, or God-consciousness.

• The 5 Pillars of Islam as the foundational structure of religion, yet not its totality.

• The reality of jihad as the holy and sacred struggle within oneself.

• The spiritual key to awakening human potential.

• The blessings of the lunar months of Rajab, Shaban and Ramadan.
