Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?

We often make the assumption that good people should have easier lives than others, yet that doesn't always appear to be the case and we may find ourselves then asking, why do bad things happen to good people?

The truth is that they who are nearest and dearest to God, and who are destined to at some level awaken to Truth and to transcend are often more challenged in their circumstances than others.

The difference is that with proper spiritual growth, development and training, a human being progressively develops the capacity to carry greater burdens, and can in face be happier and more at peace even in more challenging circumstances.

Virtues of The Remembrance La Ilaha Illa Allah

Shaykh Faraz Rabbani reminded us that the Beloved Messenger (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him) kept his lips moist with the remembrance of his Lord, using the best of phrases.

Be In this World as a Traveler

The blessed and noble Messenger of God ﷺ advised, "Be in this world as a traveler," for only thus can the heart of the human being learn to let go of attachment, which is the source of suffering.

It is when we forget that we are on a sacred and divine journey from the world of form and illusion known as dunya to the eternal abode known as akhira that we lose focus and thus lose purpose.

Yet by continually remembering that we are but travelers, we can progressively transcend the suffering that is inherent in a world that is temporal and transient.

While the world of form and appearance may rob us of purpose and warp our true nature known as fitrah, the sincere pursuit and practice of the spiritual path guides us to our true selves beyond time and space, ultimately culminating in the manifestation of divine light in the heart and in our beings.

Two Conditions of Repentance

Repentance is essential in Islam and constitutes the first step upon the spiritual path.

While modern culture and conditioning which is often based in arrogance and pride can veil our hearts from the importance of humility, it is essential for the believer seeking to return to the Presence of God to be sincere in his or her repentance.

When sincere repentance based in remorse and in intentionally asking for forgiveness does not take place, hidden idolatry persists in the heart and stains the soul, barring the human being from the pleasure of God.

Additionally, when sincere repentance is not sought, the burdens of one's sins and transgressions persist and affect all areas of our lives, particularly the health of our hearts, minds and bodies, in addition to the health and harmony of our relationships.

By humbling the self and continually seeking God's mercy and forgiveness, by learning to see the arrogance, pride and hidden idolatry of the self, we grow in self-awareness and in transcendence, thus rising to the Divine Presence of God.

The Entire Universe is Alive

We may not be aware of it, yet the truth is that the entire Universe is not only filled with life, it is in fact alive.

There is a current of energy and life that flows throughout all of creation, and in affirming this, Allah Almighty says in the Holy Qur'an that "The heavens and the earth and all that is within them glorifies God, yet you perceive not their praise," [17:44].

Additionally, the blessed Messenger of God ﷺ taught that all things possess consciousness and must be treated with love, respect and compassion.

Thus, the Muslim is one who by definition is in a state of surrender, harmony and oneness with all that is, with the Universe Itself.

The barrier and impediment to such transcendent awareness and consciousness, and to the ability to love, is but the self, the ego. And hence, the necessity of learning to become self-aware, and with the grace and guidance of God, via the messengers and their spiritual inheritors, free from the ignorance and limited consciousness of the self.

In Stillness You Will Find God

It is only when the mind is still and the self in complete absolute surrender that one can awaken to the transcendent Divine Presence of the Eternal.

Upon the sacred spiritual path, a daily meditation practice is essential.

What Are You Creating?

It is essential to realize that in each moment and in every circumstance, your response to what is happening is a choice, and that choice determines the reality you are creating.

In every instance, we are either choosing peace or suffering, light or dark, heaven or hell.

And the way of spirituality is the path to peace, prosperity, light and beauty.

As a believer, stand firm on faith, truth and beauty

How to Eliminate Stress in 60 Seconds

Although stress has become a cultural epidemic and causes immense damage to the health of our bodies, hearts and minds, it can be managed and ultimately even entirely transcended.

Stress, tension, pressure and friction are the result of consciousness that has become consumed by the world, or dunya, and the key to liberation from the inherent anxiety of the world of form and appearance is transcendence.

You can do this by tapping into your sacred breath, which connects you to the Divine Presence of the Eternal. By establishing a simple daily practice of muraqaba, or Islamic Meditation, in which you relax and surrender your self at a deep and fundamental level, you increase your presence-power and your ability to stay rooted, calm and centered, particularly during challenging circumstances and situations.

It then takes but three breaths to reconnect with the Divine Presence, and by practicing this simple method throughout the day, you will rewire your brain for trust and reliance upon the Divine rather than stress and anxiety in the world...

Breaking Spiritual Silence

A talk by Shaykh Mokhtar Maghraoui:

"Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion." (Surah Hadid, 57:20)

We are often reminded in the Qur'an that the world around us is filled with distractions that can keep us from realizing the true potential of our humanity.

The modern world's incessant concentration on material and social pursuits has granted many of us with lots of possessions and ideas, yet we still feel empty inside.

Even as Muslims' identity appears galvanized in a response to an endlessly news cycle, Islamophobia and injustice, this reactive activism to those challenges in itself often paralyzes and distracts us from the pressing issues of the soul that are humanity's greatest need.

In this session we will seek to examine how we can shed the weight from our hearts and unlock our spiritual potential.

Muslim Motivation: Believe and Do

It is said that when you take action (harakah), you will attract blessings (barakah).

Often, we are waiting for a sign from God to take action and do what we were created to do, yet it can be said that God is waiting for us to believe and to take action.

Once we are in action, our course can be corrected. When we are in movement and in motion, we can learn, adjust, correct and improve.

It is better to make mistakes and to fail than to do nothing at all. And as Muslims, as believers, we must always remain humble, sincerely seeking the pleasure and the Presence of God.
