Where does the notion of "the evil eye" come from?
Protection from the evil eye can be achieved by the remembrance of Allah through reciting Ayat-ul-Kursy ...

Influence of the evil eye
Men do you harm either because they fear you or because they hate you.

I read many posts about the evil eye on another site, from which I have been banned a few times.

I would like our Muslim friends here to tell us about the 'evil eye'. Is this concept in the Quran or hadith?

No, never mind. I have Google. I can find out for myself.

But does anyone here believe in the evil eye?

Yes it is...

Envy is often part of human nature, Doris

In some cases, this "negative energy" can be harmful.

And we do have prayers in Islam to protect us from the evil eye...

From my recent reading I have concluded that the eye is actually the organ of a human being, just an ordinary human being, who can use this weapon against a person he envies, or that person's goat, or that person's parents, or whatever.

Assuming there are actually humans who have the power to destroy with their gaze, why is not science examining them?

Turn their eyes against malignancies or North Korean leaders, for example. Turn their swords into ploughshares, as it were.

This belief seems to me to be atrociously self-centered. Look! People with magical powers have chosen to pick on ME!

Were I a praying sort of person, I think I could something more universally beneficial to pray for.

Thanks, Al-Cordoby. I can see "evil eye" in this context as a metaphor for envy.

The ayat being referred to is Al-Baqarah 2:255?

Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.
