bullet Topic: Do not give Fatwas
    Posted: 27 May 2005 at 11:01am
Bismillah Rahmanir Rahim.

Religion is naseehah (sincerity, advice).

This is sincere naseehah regarding the issue of posting fatwas, and giving our own opinions sometimes on an issue that would require a fatwa by a knowledgeable scholar.

While it is ok to post a fatwa (from a reliable website like islamonline.net)  relating to an issue that is clear, it is unwise to post a fatwa that is general to the question asked as it may not be the right decision to take for that person, as it may require a more detailed answer for that specific question asked by that person.

It is also clear in the ‘Terms of Service’ for WhyIslam Forum:

4. This is not a Fiqh discussion board. Prolonged threads arguing over Fatwas and the details of Islamic law will be closed. Avoid asking questions that require a scholar or Shaykh, as there is no one on the board qualified to answer your questions. Please use other knowledgeable means such as a scholar, Imam or knowledgeable person in your area.

Below are links explaining the meaning of fatwa and its significance etc. for our benefit and knowledge. Please I would advise everyone to take some time to read them:

http://www.islamonline.net/fatwa/english/FatwaDisplay.asp?hF atwaID=32232

http://www.islamonline.net/fatwa/english/FatwaDisplay.asp?hF atwaID=75271

http://www.islamonline.net/fatwa/english/FatwaDisplay.asp?hF atwaID=75271

The wisest course to take if one is unsure is to direct that poster to either their local Sheikh, Iman etc in their area or to a reliable website as advised in ‘Terms of Service’ no. 4.

As we are human and prone to make mistakes, we can correct each other with sincere naseehah, that way no one should/will ever feel uncomfortable when posting. Alhamdulillah that is the beauty of Islam.

Hello Zahrah and Munawar Is this why the thread about "Simplified Islamic Jurisprudence" was closed? I'm honestly curious.

Hi Kent,

Actually that thread was closed because no one was reading it, nor commenting on it.  Its in the archives, you can still comment...

A fatwa is like a religious ruling made by some scholars. They collect information from the Quran and the Sunnah to answer a question or create a law, I think. The answers are backed up, so it's not just a decision "because so-and-so says" or thinks it's right.
