7- THE QUR’AN LEADS THE WAY TO SCIENCE
By Harun Yahya

God summons humanity to investigate and reflect upon the heavens, the earth, mountains, stars, plants, seeds, animals, the alternation of the night and the day, the creation of man, the rain and many other created things. Examining these, man comes to recognize the artistry of God's creation in the world around him, and ultimately, to know his Creator, Who created the entire universe and everything in it from nothing.
Religion not only encourages scientific study, but also permits that, supported by the truths revealed through religion, scientific research be conclusive and expeditious. The reason being, that religion is the only source to provide accurate and definitive answers as to how life and the universe came into being.
There is one fact that must be recognized clearly: science can achieve reliable results only if it adopts as its main objective the investigation of the signs of creation in the universe, and strives solely towards this end. Science may reach its ultimate goal in the shortest possible time only if it is pointed in the right direction, that is, if it is rightly guided.

7- JESUS (pbuh) DID NOT DIE
By Harun Yahya

Like the other prophets, Jesus (pbuh) called upon his people to worship God, the One and Only, and to avoid all forms of denial, polytheism, and evil. Those who rejected him oppressed him and his followers. However, their plot to kill him failed, even though they thought that they had succeeded, because God raised Jesus (pbuh) to His presence. As the Qur’an reveals and the hadith corroborate, Jesus (pbuh) will return to Earth. Those who claim that he was killed or is dead are seriously mistaken. This is one of the author’s main focuses.
While revealing this truth, the author recalls other very important tidings, such as the fact that the signs of Jesus' (pbuh) second coming are becoming ever more apparent. If God wills, this event is close at hand, and the world will witness momentous events when it occurs.

Even Angels Ask

by Dr. Jeffrey Lang

Lang, a mathematics professor at the University of Kansas and a twenty-year veteran of Islam, addresses an array of difficult and frequently controversial issues ranging from predestination to other common philosophical holdups faced by skeptical Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

At times, the author approaches the Islamic spiritual quest with an aloof logic quintessential of a math teacher, nonetheless, the numerous personal narratives interspersed throughout the text, coupled with a fresh attitude toward familiar Qur’anic verses, are enough to bring even the most hard-hearted of readers to tears on several occasions.

Even Angels Ask marks Lang’s second foray into contemporary writing about Islam; his first book, Struggling to Surrender, was an account of his personal journey to Islam.

STRUGGLING TO SURRENDER - by Jeffrey Lang

Impressions of an American Convert To Islam

This is a very personal account of one man's search for God and meaning in the midst of a culture that places no value on such a quest.

His quest began: agnosticism, atheism and finally "coincidence" -a chance encounter with a Muslim student in one of his classes that eventually led to his conversion. As he soon found out, however, this was not the end of the matter, for now he had to fit in with his new community, its beliefs and traditions and the Islamic worldview and lifestyle.

For converts living in the West, many of whom come from a Judeo-Christian background and a mental framework that is almost totally alien to that of a traditional Muslim - this is no easy feat. How does one deal with the demands for the blind acceptance of hadith and accepted interpretations, the gulf between what the Qur'an says and the reality of Muslim life, the "status" of women, the presence of religion in every sphere of one's life, cultural conflicts and many other issues?

Ever since his conversion, Dr Lang has struggled to answer these questions for himself. At the request of numerous Muslim acquaintances, he decided to write about his experiences so that other American and western-educated Muslims could benefit from his insights.

Dr Lang is currently an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Kansas. He converted to Islam in the early 1980's.

The History Of The Qur'anic Text From Revelation To Compilation: A Comparative Study With The Old And New Testaments

By M. Mustafa al-A`zami

This review is by Murad Wilfried Hoffman, Muslim World Book Review, 2004, Volume 24 (Issue 4).

A very terse review of Mustafa al-A`zami's recent book on the Qur'an. Shaykh al-A`zami's work throws new light, especially, on the issues of Qur'an's compilation, dotting and addition of diacritical marks.

Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources

By Martin Lings

One of the best biographies of the prophet (saas), highly recommended.

Book Description

This is the definitive, objective biography of the Prophet, drawn from primary Arabic sources of the 8th and 9th centuries, and includes passages never before translated. It owes its freshness and directness of approach to the words of the men and women who heard Muhammad speak and witnessed the events of his life.

Book Reviews

Joseph Gardner, California State Univ. Lib., Northridge
Library Journal
: "Lings provides a wealth of detail on the life of Muhammad, the time and place of many Koranic revelations, and the foundation of Islam, all based exclusively on 8th- and  9th-century Arabic biographical sources and collections of the sayings attributed to Muhammad. General readers will find a well-written, straightforward chronological narrative; Muslim readers will appreciate the favorable treatment of Muhammad; while specialists will find a faithful and convenient rendering of source material."

The Islamic Quarterly
'This is easily the best biography of the Prophet in the English language.' Dr. Victor Danner (Indiana University) 'An enthralling story that combines impeccable scholarship with a rare sense of the sacred worthy of his subject.' (The Spectator) 'Muhammad is a true work of art, as enthralling as the best novels with the difference that this is not fiction but fact.'

Don't be Sad

An excellent book by Sheikh Al-Qarnee, in fact one of the best books I've read on Islam and how to look at life and be content

I don't know of an on-line version of this book, but it's highly recommended as it has many valuable advices on how to grow in faith and be content.

This is a book review:

As the author rightly says in the introduction, this book is about acting and rejoicing in what one has and accepting the unavoidable with a contented heart so as not togive in to despair and hopelessness.

Thank you sister. That's Dr. Ramadan's new book published this month

Here is some more background:

In the Footsteps of the Prophet

LESSONS FROM THE LIFE OF MUHAMMAD

Released in February 2007

Thursday 15 February 2007

Here is a fresh and perceptive look at Muhammad, capturing a life that was often eventful, gripping, and highly charged.

Ramadan provides both an intimate portrait of a man who was shy, kind, but determined, as well as a dramatic chronicle of a leader who launched a great religion and inspired a vast empire. More important, Ramadan presents the main events of the Prophet’s life in a way that highlights his spiritual and ethical teachings. The book underscores the significance of the Prophet’s example for some of today’s most controversial issues, such as the treatment of the poor, the role of women, Islamic criminal punishments, war, racism, and relations with other religions. Selecting those facts and stories from which we can draw a profound and vivid spiritual picture, the author asks how the Prophet’s life can remain-or become again-an example, a model, and an inspiration. And how can Muslims move from formalism-a fixation on ritual-toward a committed spiritual and social presence?

The Meanings of the Life of Muhammad

by Dr. Tariq Ramadan

In a time when Prophet Muhammad has become the subject of news headlines generating heated debates and fiery actions and reactions around the world, deep understanding and emulation of his magnanimity and wisdom are desperately needed to extinguish the blaze.

While he is devoutly loved and revered by over a billion Muslims who can recite the details of his life and character, he remains shrouded in myth and mystery for non-Muslims. But exposure to the facts of someone's life does not necessarily mean knowing one, and reverent love can elevate someone so high in a place that distant one apart from the beloved.

Tariq Ramadan's latest book,  http://www.amazon.co.uk/Messenger-Meanings-Life-Muhammad/dp/0713999608/sr=1-1/qid=1171980650/ref=sr_1_1/203-4866275-9679107?ie=UTF8&s=books - , is a biography of the Prophet that aims to lift the shrouds of mystery for non-Muslims and bridge the distance for Muslims. Ramadan does not pretend to uncover any new details, nor does he aspire for his book to replace the multitude of biographies about the Prophet; in fact he admits that his work very much relies on the classics among them.

A Unique Look

What makes Ramadan's book unique is that he delves into the details of the life of the Prophet, from before birth to the hour of his death, mining for the timeless spiritual teachings and timely contemporary lessons so sorely needed in our time.

In beautifully poetic and easy-to-read prose, these spiritual teachings begin in the introduction when Ramadan reminds us that loving the Prophet means constantly meditating over his life.

The teaching continues in the first chapter, "Encounter With the Sacred," with a lesson on trials and faith, doubts and trust, and being torn between two loves. This was done by retelling the story of Abraham and, through it, drawing the spiritual line and bloodline that link the two prophets.

In The Prophet's Footsteps

In the ensuing chapters, Ramadan invites us to walk along with him in the footsteps of the Prophet as his Rab (Lord) prepares him from infancy to adulthood for the mission to come: his being orphaned young, him having a contemplative temperament, his trade, him being married to a woman his senior, and his servant

All were signs and preparatory education for him as well as signs and reflective teachings for us today. We are called to witness the Prophet in his most difficult times and see him as both an ordinary human and the exemplary model, guide, and leader he was and continues to be for Muslims.
Through the Prophet's life, we are comforted by how intimately close God is and yet awed by how so transcendent He is. Muslims and non-Muslims alike learn how the Prophet addressed issues that over 1,400 years later remain the topics of the day: the environment, marriage and friendship, the role of women, religious and cultural pluralism, the inevitable challenges involved, apostasy, conflict resolution, war, along with consultation and leadership.

Private Meditation

Ramadan does not sermonize about these lessons; in these moments, the reader often seems to be drawn in to join Ramadan in his private meditation on the Prophet's life. The reader pauses with him on verses from the Qur'an and the Prophet's hadiths at once translating and providing commentary on both.

Also, it extracts the spiritual, moral, and ethical lessons from these textual sources and the events taking place in those moments so long ago which are so relevant to our lives today.

In intentionally short chapters, Ramadan succeeds in bringing the Prophet to life to personally probe the conscious of Muslims and non-Muslims alike and nudge them to mine deeper in their hearts and minds for the better selves they are capable of becoming.

Thanks, Al-Cordoby for bringing up Dr Murad Hoffman. It was Dr Hoffman's "Islam: The Alternative" that brought me firmly to the Straight Path, even as I was struggling with partial Christian hodge-podge of extemporized ideas.

These books should be required reading at the US high school/collegiate level as they provide information on Islam within the framework of Western (Judeo-Christian) conceptual notions of reality.

Hi Hazel:

I don't know the other titles by Murad Hoffman, but will read them eventually. I only know "Islam: The Alternative" which was written for a Western audience, already exposed to Judeo-Christian values; it allays the typical Western fear toward Islam as being rigid, inflexible and/or unbending. Dr Hoffmann has a Law background from Harvard and from German universities -- therefore, my reaction toward Islam after reading "Islam: The Alternative" was favorable and much more positive.

Currently, I am absorbed with Hans Kung's "Islam: Past, Present and Future." Another German and a leading theologian of this era and he offers much thought-provoking material for both Western readers and for Muslims around the world. I trust you are able to access this book where you are!

Walk on Water - The Wisdom of Jesus (peace be upon him)

The following sayings of Jesus (peace be upon him) from traditional Arabic sources are excerpted from Walk on Water, a forthcoming book by Hamza Yusuf:

According to Ahmad, Jesus peace be upon him was known to have said,

"Virtuous action does not consist in doing good to someone who has done good to you -that is merely returning a favor. Virtuous action consists in doing good to those who have wronged you." (Ahmad)

According to Malik  b. Anas, Jesus, the son of Mary, said,

"Do not speak much without remembering God, for by doing so, you harden your hearts. Surely a hard heart is distant from God though you are unaware. Do not, like lords, look at the faults of others. Rather, like servants, look at your own faults. In truth, humanity is comprised of only two types, the afflicted and the sound. So show mercy to the afflicted, and praise God for well-being." (Muwatta of Malik)

It is related that Jesus, the son of Mary,  said,

"It is of no use to know something if one does not act upon it. In truth, an abundance of knowledge only increases one in pride if one does not act accordingly." (Ahmad )

Jesus, the son of Mary, was known to have said,

"Love of this world is the source of every wrong action, and there is much harm in wealth." They asked, "What is its harm?"

Jesus replied, "Its possessor is never safe from pride and arrogance." They said, "What if he is free of those two? Is there still harm?" Jesus responded, "Yes, for by nurturing his wealth, he is diverted from the remembrance of God." (Ahmad )

Creating a World Without Poverty:

Social Business and the Future of Capitalism

By Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Prize Winner 2006

(Banker to the Poor)

What if you could harness the power of the free market to solve the problems of poverty, hunger, and inequality?

To some, it sounds impossible.

But Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus is doing exactly that.

As founder of Grameen Bank, Yunus pioneered microcredit, the innovative banking program that provides poor people––mainly women––with small loans they use to launch businesses and lift their families out of poverty. In the past thirty years, microcredit has spread to every continent and benefited over 100 million families. But Yunus remained unsatisfied. Much more could be done, he believed, if the dynamics of capitalism could be applied to humanity’s greatest challenges.

Now, in Creating a World Without Poverty, Yunus goes beyond microcredit to pioneer the idea of social business––a completely new way to use the creative vibrancy of business to tackle social problems from poverty and pollution to inadequate health care and lack of education. This book describes how Yunus––in partnership with some of the world’s most visionary business leaders––has launched the world’s first purposely designed social businesses. From collaborating with Danone to produce affordable, nutritious yogurt for malnourished children in Bangladesh to building eyecare hospitals that will save thousands of poor people from blindness, Creating a World Without Poverty offers a glimpse of the amazing future Yunus forecasts for a planet transformed by thousands of social businesses. Yunus’s “Next Big Idea” offers a pioneering model for nothing less than a new, more humane form of capitalism.

Purification Of The Heart - A Book Review

Purification of the Heart by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf (USA)

It has been said by our illustrious predecessors that the intellect lies in the heart [1]. A verse of the Noble Quran states, "In this is a lesson for every man who has a heart or gives ear with full attention" [2]. In a sound tradition, Muhammad stated while pointing his fingers towards the heart, "Verily, God looks not at your bodies nor at your faces but He looks at your hearts" [3].

Consequently, the scholars of Islam wrote countless texts on how to cleanse and purify one's heart from 'spiritual diseases' that may cause one to defy the sacred law, or at least lead one to do so. Purification of the Heart by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf is one such book  ...

Chapters include the diseases of 'Miserliness', 'Love of the World', 'Envy' and 'Ostentation'. The latter chapter addresses what we as humans desire from our worship to God. Do we desire some benefit in this world? Do we worship God in hope of the delights of the hereafter? Or are we steadfast out of fear of punishment? ...

Does the book fulfil the objectives? It certainly presents all types of feelings and emotions that humankind suffers with to such an extent it would be surprising if one could not find a single chapter relevant to oneself. Having said that, it is an incredibly difficult science to study alone yet this is a perfect introduction. The commentary is excellent and definitely highlights the prevalence of diseased hearts in the modern world, not restricting it to any particular community.

Remembering the Lost History of Muslim Scientists

A US Diplomat's Journey Into Muslim's Past

"If we lose the past, how would we enter the future?"

This is how former US diplomat and author Michael Hamilton Morgan summarized the idea behind his book "Lost History: The Enduring Legacy of Muslim Scientists, Thinkers, and Artists" which talks about how the Islamic civilization contributed significantly to our modern world. On Monday, March 10, 2008, Morgan spoke at Sultan El-Ghouri palace in Cairo's historic Al-Azhar district, Egypt, on the occasion of publishing the Arabic translation of his book.

The book is based on the premise that there is no clash of civilizations or war of religions between Islam and the West. Instead, people today have a single global digital civilization that is derived from the achievements of Muslim thinkers, writers, and artists during what Europe calls the middle ages
