This is a recent interview with him where he talks about his experience as a Muslim for more than 30 years now:

After obtaining his BA in International Relations and his MA in Political Science, he traveled to Cairo, Egypt to study Arabic.

Upon returning to the United States, Imam Zaid served as imam of Masjid al-Islam in New Haven Connecticut from 1988 to 1994.

He then traveled to Syria and Morocco to further pursue studies in Arabic as well as in Islamic law, Quranic studies, and spirituality.

After graduating from Syria's prestigious Abu Noor University, he returned to Connecticut in 2001 and eventually moved to Hayward, California in 2003 to serve as a resident scholar and lecturer at Zaytuna Institute. ......

Tranquility From Allah

By Imam Zaid on 24 January 2009

In these days, when there is so much to unsettle the soul and create disharmony in the spirit, we pray that the recitation of and reflection on these verses can be a source of healing and comfort.

(It is He Who sent down tranquility into the hearts of the believers, that they may add faith to their faith; for unto God belong the forces of the heavens and the earth; and God is Omniscient, Wise.) (48:4)

Good Character Part Two: Etiquette, Shyness, Modesty, and Freedom

By Imam Zaid on 25 July 2009

A.1. Etiquette/Courtesy (Adab) Adab involves good comportment, whether one is standing or sitting; maintaining good character, and manifesting praiseworthy traits. Its essence involves knowing all the things to be avoided in order not to commit errors in dealing with self and others.

A.2. Bashfulness or Modesty or Shame (Haya’) Haya’ is a constrained feeling caused by the fear of something that would impugn one’s character, or leaving that thing fearing that involvement with it would lead to one’s condemnation.

A.3. Humility (Tawadu’) Tawadu’ involves one’s consciously declining to assume a station desired by those seeking to exalt one.

A.4. Freedom (Hurriyya) Hurriyya is to cut off one’s deepest sentiments from being obsessed with anything in the creation in order to be preoccupied with the One (God) who owns all of creation.

A.5. Sayings of the Scholars: Freedom (Hurriyya)

“Verily, you will not arrive at pure freedom as long as you see any trace of your servitude to God emanating from yourself.”
Junayd

“Whosoever desires to taste the flavor of real freedom and to relax from the burden of devotional acts, let him purify the depth of his heart so that it is a space shared by only him and God.”
Bishr al-Hafi

“When the worshipper has internalized all of the stations of servitude he will be free from the fatigue involved in worship. He will then diligently undertake devotions with no second thoughts or burden.”
Al-Husayn bin Mansur

“The children of the world are served by handmaidens and servants. The children of the Hereafter are served by the liberated and the righteous.”
Yahya bin Mu’adh

How to avoid Envy

Among all traditions Envy is considered evil. People define it as unreasonable, irrational, imprudent, vicious, or wrong to feel. Following is a collection of Islamic traditions on how to avoid Envy by Imam Zaid Shakir. .....

Ten Cures for Envy

  1. Seeking refuge with Allah from its evil. (Verse 5 Shura 113 - http://www.islamicity.com/quran.asp?s=113:1-113:5 - Quran 113:1-5 )

  2. Being conscious of Allah (Taqwa).

  3. Patience with one's social enemy [by not retaliating against him].

  4. Relying on Allah, for whosoever relies on Allah, He suffices him.

  5. Emptying the heart of being preoccupied with or thinking about her [the object of one's envy].

  6. Orienting oneself towards Allah, being sincere with Him, placing His love, pleasure and penitence to Him in the place of fleeting thoughts of the soul and its baseless aspirations.

  7. Having pure repentance to Allah from the sins his enemies have led him to commit.

  8. Giving charity and engaging in acts of goodness to the extent possible, because that has an amazing effect in repulsing tribulations, the evil eye, and the wickedness of the envious person.

  9. This is the most difficult cure for the ego, and the weightiest upon it. No one is given the providence to undertake it except one whose portion [of spiritual strength] from Allah is great. It is extinguishing the fire of envy, iniquity, and harm by extending good to the envious person.

  10. This is the compendium of all of the other cures; they all revolve around it. Namely, pure divine unity, and elevating your thought from the effects manifested in creation [something envy revolves around] to the mighty, wise cause of those effects.

Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya, al-Tafsir al-Qayyam

Imam Zaid Shakir's twitter messages

The unexamined life is not worth living, the unexamined gift is not worth giving.

If you see the world as a masquerade, can you recognize your own face?

The world is a prison for the believer. He cannot escape without the warden's help. The world is paradise for the disbeliever. He cannot appreciate it without imprisoning himself.

An ill-considered contention is oftentimes better than a calculated pretension.

Within us all there lies the potential to realize our dreams. However, within only a few of us there lies the courage to realize our pot ...

If your disappointment with Muslims leads you to divorce your heart from Islam; maybe Islam was never in your heart to begin with.

Don't tell me how bad my words or actions may have unintentionally been. Tell me how I can consciously rectify them.

Hatred is the refuge of wretched souls. Try to find some love in your life and spread it around.!

Nothing worth having is ever free, nor should we expect it to be. What are we willing to pay for a great community?

Capitalism is a system predicated on infinite growth in a finite world. It is doomed to fail.

If we were sincere about fostering a better world, the existence of that world would be the fruit of our sincerity.

The Foundation of Spiritual States

By Imam Zaid Shakir

You should know, may God have mercy on you, that truthfulness and sincerity are the foundations of every spiritual state. Patience, contentment, true asceticism, pleasure, and intimacy are branches of truthfulness. While sincerity branches out into certitude, fear, love, majesty, shyness, and magnifying [God]. Each believer has a place in one of these stations, which he passes, and which then is the state he is known by.

Hence, it is said of him, fearful, yet he has hope; or hopeful, but he has fear; patient, but he has satisfaction; loving, but he has shyness. The strength or weakness of every state is proportionate to the faith and spiritual maturity of the servant.

The foundation of each of these states has three signs by which it is known. Truthfulness is in three things, which are not complete without it: Truthfulness of the heart in faith that is actualized; truthfulness of intention in religious actions; and truthfulness of expression in speech.

Patience is in three things, which are not complete without it: Patience in avoiding those things God has forbidden; patience in [dealing with the difficulty involved in] following the command of God; and patience at the time of a calamity, while anticipating God’s grace.

Contentment is in three things, which are not complete without it: [Being content with] little materially even though material means are available; with poverty when possessing nothing and the prospects of future abundance are lacking; and with the tranquility found in the worship of God, be He mighty and majestic, despite being steeped in poverty.

Contentment has a beginning and an end. Its beginning lies in abandoning excess despite the existence of abundance. Its end is the existence of spiritual wealth despite material poverty and lack of worldly means. From this point of departure, one of the sages mentioned that contentment is a higher station than satisfaction. What he meant is complete contentment, because the state of one who is satisfied does not change according to his being denied or given. One who is content is enriched with his Lord. He does not seek any increase along with Him to assuage the desire of his soul—unless that increase is a gift from God to him.

Abstinence is in three things, the ascetic is not called abstinent without them: Ridding himself of worldly possessions; passing up enjoyment of some lawful things; and being carefree because of the large amounts of time [devoted to God]. A man is a true ascetic if he is characterized by three other things: He protects his soul when tempted by his desires; he flees from opportunities to enrich himself materially; he only meets his needs with what he knows to be lawful.

Treatise for the Seekers of Guidance

The translation, notes, and commentary of Imam al-Harith al-Muhasibis Risala al-Mustarshidin (Treatise For The Seekers Of Guidance) by Zaid Shakir is intended to serve as a layman's guide to Islamic spirituality.

Al - Muhasibi presents most of the major ideas that would both serve as the basis for a full program of spiritual development and comprise an insightful overview of a system of Islamic moral psychology.

He examines in great depth and penetrating insight the psychological motivations and justifications for moral thought and action and correspondingly the associated bases of immorality. In so doing, he has provided a road map that any person can follow to overcome the guiles of his fundamental enemies: the world, the ego, the whims of the soul, and Satan

Bravo Egypt!

The Egyptian people have accomplished one of the major objectives of their historic revolution. They have brought the thirty-year reign of Hosni Mubarak to an end. As they celebrate, from Alexandria in the north down to Aswan in the south, they realize that this is only the beginning of the long and arduous march to a free and open system that will guarantee their dignity and fundamental rights. However, every journey has a beginning and this glorious beginning is a harbinger of a glorious end. As the great Egyptian sage, Ibn ‘Ata Allah Sankadari, mentioned, “An illuminated beginning is a portent of an illuminated end.” May that be so in the case of the Egyptian Revolution...

Here in the United States many politicians and pundits are asking, “Why didn’t we see this coming?” I will offer my answer here. Specifically, American policy-making towards the Middle East has become dominated by anti-Muslim bigots. They have projected their own fears onto the governing elite and created such an obsession with so-called radical Islam that the latter has accepted the draconian (and profitable for some) measures being put into place to fight it, including support for “moderate” regimes like Mubarak’s. All the while, they have failed to take note of the real, dynamic politics on the ground in the Middle East and the civil society that has sprung up around those politics. The Egyptian Revolution has shown just how weak and marginal so-called radical Islam is in most Muslim societies. In one of the great ironies of history, the violent nihilists of “radical Islam,” besides the army, represent one of the few potential counter-revolutionary forces in Egypt.

The road ahead in Egypt will not be an easy one. There are powerful interests, both in Egypt and in other countries who were profiting lavishly from the ancient regime and the system of crony capitalism it has put in place to syphon off the country’s wealth. They have much to lose from a new system and will fight hard to preserve at least some of the privileges they formerly possessed. New institutions will have to be built. A new balance of power will have to be hammered out between the groups the protesters represent and the older, more established parties and groups who supported the protests, along with those who did not. The health care and university systems, both of which have been destroyed by mindless and neglectful policies, will have to be rebuilt. The minefields of the Palestinian situation will also have to be traversed.  However, that is tomorrow’s work and tomorrow’s worry. As for today, let the people of Egypt celebrate. Bravo, Egypt, Bravo!

A Legacy of Pride

The history of enslaved Muslims in the West is well documented. What is less well know is the influence they had and the impact they left in the communities that they were enslaved in.

Imam Zaid Shakir talks about the legacy that great individuals such as Ayuba Suleiman Diallo and Abdu-l-Rahman Ibrahim Ibn Sori played during the time of slavery in the United States. He outlines the importance of making connections with our Islamic history and why it is important to be aware of how their steadfast nature and upright character serve as examples to Muslims across the world today.

Our responsibility is to remove ignorance with knowledge...

So it is very important for us to be teachers. The Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned "I was sent as a teacher". And so we should see ourselves in our coming and our going, our speeches, our actions and our state of being to be constantly teaching and educating and giving out ...

Serve Your Community

So that is our challenge, and one of the good things that we are doing as a community are the projects such as WhyIslam, and the various human service initiatives such, as the Meals on Wheels and other projects that ICNA has initiated. And we have to continue, we have to support these projects. We have to intensify our efforts in that regard because these are basic human kindnesses that touch people's hearts...

Mercy: The Distinguishing Trait of Islam – 2

What is a Hero?

Being Superior to the Ills of Society

If we move away from that textbook definition, and reflect on another definition, this definition is given to us by the infamous or famous-depending on how you look at him- Napoleon Bonaparte. He said

“True heroism consists in being superior to the ills of life, in whatever shape they may challenge us to combat.”

This definition allows room, space and opportunity for all of us to be heroes, for if each one of us looks deep down inside of ourselves, digs deep down inside of ourselves, we can pull up those qualities and those characteristics which allow us to rise above the ills of life, the ills of society, the ills that are even within ourselves, and to combat, overcome and to rise above.

Brothers and sisters, we know that there are many ills in our society, and this is not the time to run through all those ills, or to even emphasize or focus on them. But we should understand that no matter what those ills are in our society, and we can complain about them, we can dismiss them, we can become obsessed with overcoming them. But if we understand that our truth, love, dedication, compassion and mercy are calling us to rise above those ills, then as we said each and everyone of us can be a hero...

Conclusion

In conclusion, I say if you leave this hall today with nothing more than a conviction that your love, charity, mercy, courage, nobility and dignity can allow you to be a light in this world, then brothers and sisters you can be a hero.

I’d like to conclude by asking all of you to join me in a prayer that was taught to us by our Prophet Muhammad, (peace and mercy be upon him), and that is a prayer that we all become filled and enveloped with light, and all the manifestations of mercy, compassion, love, charity and respecting and honoring justice. Those are all manifestations of light. So repeat after me, if you will...

Zaid Shakir: Love For Your Brother

Love… Glue that Holds the Community Together

“No one of you truly believes until he loves for his brother (she loves for her sister) what he loves for himself”, this hadith is the antidote for one of the most destructive diseases that can afflict the body politic of the Muslim community, and that is the disease of jealousy. Jealousy is described as the disease of the nations.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) says “The disease of the nations will creep upon you, that’s to say hatred and jealousy.” Jealousy is a disease, and the Prophet mentioned that “Jealousy consumes good deeds the same way as fire consumes dry wood”, so it just burns away our good deeds.

And the Prophet (peace be upon him) reminded us of those things which strong Islamic brotherhood is built on. The first thing he said “Don’t envy one another, don’t conspire against each other by raising the prices with no intention to buy whatever commodity when one is raising the price just to harm one’s brother, don’t hate one another, don’t turn your backs to one another.”

But the first thing he mentioned is “Don’t envy one another”. Envy or jealousy is desiring a blessing Allah has given a brother or sister to be taken away from them. That’s the essence of Envy.

This hadith is the antidote because it encourages the opposite: jealousy or envy is desiring to have a blessing that our brother or sister has been given by Allah taken away. The Prophet saying “No one of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself,” this is a desire to have a blessing one has or possess extended to one’s brother or sister. So it’s the opposite.

And by encouraging this in our communities, we are not only rid ourselves of this deadly disease, but we engage in an action that perfects and strengthens and completes our faith. So it’s very important for us to reflect on this particular hadith...

The Prophet's (Peace and Blessing be upon Him) Farewell Address is one of the most profound speeches in human history. In a few lines, the Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessing be upon Him) touched on issues ranging from sacred times and places, tribalism, race relations, usury, the guiles of Satan, women's rights, devotional acts, the universal brotherhood of Islam, the finality of his message, the incumbency of obedience of Quran and Sunnah and much more.

In this lecture series we delve into the depths of the meanings contained in this powerful and moving sermon.
