A nice video and text to help us improve the quality of our prayer

Losing concentration while praying is a problem we often face, and the purpose of this talk is to help us remain focused while praying in order to worship God with reverence as best as we can.

Praying is a spiritual journey that benefits our soul, and it is in our own best interest to make it as perfect as we can

The Spirit of Prayer - Part 1

A believer tries to prepare himself to worship correctly in reverence.

Therefore, he imagines that this life has ended, as it surely will, and that the Day of Judgment has arrived, as it surely will, and that he sees the sirat (a path in the hereafter that is thinner than a hair and sharper than a sword) in front of him. He pictures Paradise on his right inviting him with its everlasting luxury. Likewise, he pictures hell to the left of him, appearing with its everlasting torture.

After the above-mentioned, the believer thinks of the might of Allah, and the fears he has of this life and the hereafter as well as those of Heaven and Hell. Subsequently, his contemplation of these things eases his thoughts about them because God is greater than these things and greater than anything that ever occurred to any human mind. He (Allah) created everything from nothing with a word and He has the power to destroy everything with a word.

Hence, the believer raises his hands towards his ears as if to cast off the concerns of this life from his mind and he proclaims a statement from the depths of his heart, “Allahu akbar” (God is Greater).

With that, he stands before Allah...

The second part of this talk deals with the first verses of Chapter 1 of the Quran (Al-Fatihah), and the importance of understanding its deep meanings in order to reach the stage of reverence to Allah, and obtain the maximum benefit out of the prayer.

Praying is a spiritual journey that benefits our soul, and it is in our own best interest to make it as perfect as we can

The Spirit of Prayer - Part 2

The second portion of the first verse reads “Rabbil ‘alameen” (The Lord of the worlds).

What does the word “Rabb” mean?

Its meaning does not imply a ruler or a king or even a master. The word “Rabb,” or Lord, entails rearing, educating, protecting, and nurturing. The “Rabb” is the one who carries out the job of raising someone or something. The word “Al-alameen,” (the worlds), is the plural of “‘Aalam” (world). Thus, He is the Sustainer and Creator. He is the One who developed and preserved the world of the Earth, stars, waters, Jinns, demons, angels, and all other worlds.

Therefore, imagine all these meanings when you read these four words, “Al-hamdulillahi rabb al-‘alameen” {Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds} (Al-Fathah 1: 2)

The next verse states “Arrahman Arraheem” {the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful} (3). He attributed mercy to Himself and repeated it because His mercy is recurring...

In this third and final part, Fadel Soliman continues to ponder on the meanings of the remaining verses from Chapter 1, and explains the following acts and pillars of Salah, and ends by how to conclude the prayer.

The Spirit of Prayer - Part 3

After praising Allah for His blessings, you acknowledge that He is the Lord of the worlds and the most merciful of the merciful ones. Likewise, you acknowledge the fact that He is the master of the Day of Reckoning and you dissociate Him from any partner (overt or covert). After doing all of the above and dedicating your worship solely to Him, Allah instructs you on how to ask Him for what benefits you. He combines all goodness for his servants in one phrase, “Assirat al-mustaqeem” (The Straight Path).

Come to Prayer! Come to Success!

We are truly in great need of continual good and the removal of hardships through a strong relationship with our Creator that makes life flow easily, peacefully, and blessedly.

Prayer guarantees all this to a believer. Along each day’s route, Islam designated five gracious pauses for God, distributed at specific times throughout the day, during which mankind is directed to meet their Lord, open their hearts, and speak their minds to Him, starting by praising Him and acknowledging His grandeur, followed by requesting His blessings and the averting of evils, asking for His help and seeking His contentment, and shoring up their deficient knowledge with His perfect knowledge and their inadequate power with His Supreme Power...

The Heart of Salaah

The acts of devotion God has prescribed for believers are meant to bring us closer to Him, to make our hearts attached to Him, and to get to know Him, and love Him.

The five daily prayers are not simply physical acts we perform, and words we say, but they are a means to strengthen our spiritual heart when we are faced with challenges.

In prayer, we direct our hearts towards the Divine, as explained by Sheikh Mokhtar Maghraoui on Peace TV:

The Life Changing Power of Prayer

When I embraced Islam, my biggest challenge was learning to pray.

Of course I had "prayed" before, as a Christian, but in Islam prayer means more--it is a ritual of submission involving body and mind.

I wanted to pray, but like everything else, I didn't know how to start...

A third major change when I started praying was becoming part of the Muslim community. By wearing a scarf, I met other Muslims on campus. By attending Friday prayers, I started to meet other Muslims at the mosque. I started attending educational programs, and when my parents kicked me out, through the mosque I found a Muslim roommate.

The five daily prayers are a kind of glue that holds the Muslim community together--at first it just gave me a reason to socialize with other Muslims, though eventually they became some of my closest friends...

Prayer Makes Us Better (Part 2)

He doesn’t need our prayers or our praise and He certainly doesn’t need us to give up sweets in return for good health or a new job!

So what is prayer for? Why do we do it?

Let us just remind ourselves about some basics. If Allah didn’t need us at all, the only reason for His creating us must be something to do with it being for our own benefit, not His.

Just as the http://www.onislam.net/english/reading-islam/understanding-islam/belief/angels/452883-angels-created-to-worship-and-obey-god-part-1.html - angels find their complete happiness in worshiping Him night and day (even though He is in no need of their worship or their praise), so we find our complete happiness in doing His will. That’s right, we are the ones who benefit from doing Allah’s will, not Him...

Muslim Prayer: The Spiritual Ritual (Folder)

We get up and make ablution and then find a quiet place to pray in peace.

We take ten minutes to remember our Creator and refocus our energy on what is really important and relax.

Relax our hearts, our minds, and our souls.

Prayer lifts a person http://www.onislam.net/english/ask-about-islam/faith-and-worship/heart-and-soul/168660-praying-like-a-robot.html?Soul= - spiritually towards his or her Creator and if it is done with devotion and sincerity, his or her heart will be filled with the love of God and the hope of Paradise.

So how do we recharge our spiritual batteries?

Prayer Makes Us Better (Part 3)

At its most basic, prayer can be described as “talking to God.”

When that talking stops, it is little wonder that our Islam very soon begins to weaken. The almost inevitable result of not praying is that we lose our faith altogether.

Perhaps this is why Allah Almighty has required of all Muslims that they pray five times a day. Within Islam there is a built in safeguard to stop us drifting away...

Prayer Makes Us Better (Part 4)

Prayer is more than a ritual. It is more than a routine obligation required of us.

Prayer, in fact, is like the very air we breathe. Without it our lives become dry and lose their meaning...

In Ramadan, though, Allah Almighty is waiting for us. He isn’t trying to sell us jeans. He is not waiting to say that He has been waiting for us all day. He is, in fact, waiting to tell us that He has been waiting for us all our lives to come back to Him. All we have to do is respond to His welcome.

Ramadan is a time for us all to come back to Allah, whether we last spoke to Him at Fajr or we last spoke to Him twenty years ago. It is a time to forget the past, to lay ourselves completely before Him and to ask for His help...

Taking Back the Sweetness of Our Prayers

Prayer is the first pillar mentioned right after the testimony of belief. It defines us. Its quality shapes us. We know the first item that will be opened and examined on the Day of Judgment will be our book of prayers. Allah mentioned in the Quran:

{And perform Salah. Verily, Salah prevents from lewdness and evils.} ( http://quran.com/29/45 - 29:45 )

If we can keep our prayers good, everything else will be good.

This is exactly why Satan tries to attack our prayers, and why we have to rid the habit of not concentrating from our selves, especially before the month of Ramadan comes in, when we normally increase in the amount of prayers we do.

1. The first thing to keep in mind is: Salah is very enjoyable. It is Satan who makes us feel like it’s a burden, and those who accept his definitions become heedless and lazy...

Your Salah is Your Oxygen

After establishing belief, the salah is the next thing that the soul needs to remain healthy and the iman high.

If shahadah is the heart beat of your iman, then salah is the oxygen that keeps the heart beat going, that keeps your connection with Allah strong.

Basic Needs of the Soul

Yasmin Mogahed said in a speech entitled “ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoK_AxlB0fw - Keeping the Torch Lit ” that, “you never say you don't have time to breathe”.

This is the kind of attitude that we need to have about prayer. It is a basic need of iman and therefore the health of our soul.

Just like when we breathe, we inhale what our body needs and exhale what it doesn't need, in prayer, we are taking in what is good and removing what is bad from our souls.

In prayer, we praise Allah. We ask for guidance and steadfastness. We remind ourselves that Allah knows our deeds and that we will be held to account by Him. And with that we take in the good...

How to Achieve Spirituality in Prayer?

When making takbir (pronouncing the phrase Allahu Akbar to begin the Prayer), your heart must be inundated with the meaning of the takbir. You should feel in your heart that nothing whatsoever is greater than Allah.

Reciting the Quran in the Prayer

People fall into three categories when it comes to Quran recitation:

(a) those who move their tongues unconsciously

(b) those who are conscious of the movement of tongue, understand the meaning while listening as if to a person outside themselves; this is the degree of ‘those on the right

(c) those who start from awareness of the meaning, then use the tongue to give expression to this inner consciousness.

Bowing

Bowing (ruku’) indicates a renewed affirmation of your awareness of the supreme greatness of Allah. In bowing you confirm your submissiveness and humility, striving to refine your inner feelings through a fresh awareness of your own impotence and insignificance before the might and grandeur of your Lord.

To confirm this, you seek the aid of your tongue, glorifying Allah and testifying repeatedly to His Supreme Majesty.

Then you rise from bowing, hopeful that He will be merciful towards you. To emphasize this hope within you, you say: “Allah hears those who give thanks to Him.”

Acknowledging the need to express gratitude, you immediately add: “Grateful praise to You our Lord!”

Prostration

Then you go down into prostration. This is the utmost point of submission, for when you prostrate, you bring the noblest part of your body–your face–down to meet the lowliest of all things, the dust of the earth...

Q&A: How to Avoid Lack of Concentration in Prayers?

when Muslims stand before Almighty Allah in prayer, they should remember that Satan is present and ready to distract them from their prayers.

In this case, Muslims should remember Almighty Allah and humbly contemplate the meanings of the Qur’an and the exaltations and glorifications they say during the different stages of prayer.

If Muslims train themselves to do this time after time, they will be able to avoid these satanic distractions. But if they cannot do this, they will deviate from the spiritual pleasure of the prayer and turn it to a mechanical exercise that does not uplift their souls or affect their feelings.

It is worth mentioning also that it is a natural characteristic in humans that they cannot focus their attention on more than one thing at a time, and that if people’s senses are directed towards certain points in the place, one’s concentration will focus thereon, without being distracted elsewhere.

Therefore, scholars who have tried hard to resist distraction during prayer and proved successful in this regard advise that when in prayer, Muslims should look at the place of prostration while standing in prayer...

How Does Prayer Make the Best Change?

In life, generally, we’re very good at asking for things, but not so good at saying http://aboutislam.net/spirituality/thankfulness/ - thank you when we get what we want.

The same is true in our dealings with Allah.

Not having given Him a thought, we http://aboutislam.net/reading-islam/understanding-islam/turn-back-now-allah-forgives-sins/ - turn to Allah as soon as we want something. Maybe an exam is drawing close or there is a bill to be paid or we are going for a job interview. It is then that we pray with all our hearts, offering anything to please Allah.

We tell Him that we’ll give up smoking or that we will never look at certain sites on the internet again if only we can get what we are asking for.

When we do get what we want our thanks is brief and we soon go back to what we promised to stop doing.

The problem is that most of the time, most of us look at Allah as some kind of Santa Claus who will give us gifts when we ask for them. Being childlike and trusting in http://aboutislam.net/spirituality/6-tips-making-daily-prayer-habit/ - prayer is one thing, but often our attitudes are not childlike, but childish.

Surely we all know that Allah Almighty is the creator “of the heavens and the earth and everything in between.” He doesn’t need our prayers or our praise and He certainly doesn’t need us to give up sweets in return for good health or a new job!

So what is prayer for? Why do we do it? ...

Beyond Hope and Fear: Learning to Love Prayers

With regards to fear, our master and Prophet, based on his incomparable knowledge of Allah and spiritual reality, said, “Truly, I am the most God-fearing among you,” despite his unparalleled scrupulousness and him being granted Allah’s utmost love and satisfaction.

That is not all of it. In fact, as believers, the essence of faith should not be based solely on fear.

It is a stage, an element, a function maybe central for many, including myself, in our path to Allah; seeing the nature of our egos, psyches, and worldliness. The human soul is created with basic fear and it should be dealt with and used to straighten it in order for one to traverse to Allah.

Hope Should Outweigh Fear

Having said that, still, hope should always outweigh fear.

First, as Imam Al-Ghazali mentions, continuous dependence on fear undoubtedly leads to despair. At any stage, one should have a little more hope than fear.

Works based on hope are so much better than ones based on fear...

How Can I Improve Focus and Spirituality During Prayer?

Many Muslims are aware they could pray in a better manner so you are not alone in your concerns. The point, as you say, is what can be done about it?

Prayer Is A Relationship

Prayer in Islam is a pillar of the religion, not a http://aboutislam.net/spirituality/prayer-is-not-only-a-ritual/ - ‘ritual’ as many people seem to think. It is the establishment of a close and special relationship with our Creator, Allah.

Of course, the prerequisite for prayer is purity. This applies to clothes and to ablution, which are the requirements for physical cleanliness.

Then comes the intention, which is the requirement for spiritual cleanliness and purity.

When one stands up in prayer, one begins with ‘Allahu Akbar’ (God is Great), raising one’s hands (at least shoulder-high), facing the Ka’aba (the direction for Muslims to pray) and entering the state of prayer.

It is as if we are http://aboutislam.net/shariah/quran/quranic-reflections/quran-reflections-1-relate-al-fatihah-life/ - saying goodbye to the physical world and ‘entering’ the spiritual world, dwelling in the presence of Allah.

It is as if we are entering into the Court of the Greatest Authority, King of Kings and Lord of the universe...

How I Came to Love the Prayer as a Muslim

(Convert Experience)

As Muslims we lead our life to a pre-determined routine, ordained by Allah and that revolves around our http://aboutislam.net/reading-islam/finding-peace/remembering-allah/your-salah-is-your-oxygen/ - Salah (ritual Prayer). We awake with the birds, before dawn to offer our Fajr prayers (Dawn Prayer); we sleep only after offering our Isha prayer (Night Prayer).

We take breaks from work or study to offer Zuhr prayer (Noon Prayer) and Asr prayer (Afternoon Prayer). And at sunset we hasten so that we do not delay our Maghrib prayers (Sunset Prayer) we must pray before twilight fades away! Our purpose in life is to http://aboutislam.net/reading-islam/understanding-islam/worship-allah-pearls-quran-1/ - worship our Creator and to sing His praises and Salah is what He recommends.

Today after so many years of praying it seems easy – almost second nature, but there were times when I found it tough...

Q&A: Maintain Focus: Can I Keep My Eyes Closed During Prayer?

Islam gives much attention to a Muslim’s relation with His Creator.

For this purpose, Allah ordained http://aboutislam.net/reading-islam/finding-peace/remembering-allah/daily-prayers-five-not-six/ - five daily prayers to help Muslims http://aboutislam.net/spirituality/spiritual-benefits-prayer/ - remain connected with Him throughout the day.

Prayer is the real connection between us and Allah. Prayer is the http://aboutislam.net/counseling/ask-about-islam/7-destructive-sins/ - main factor in forgiving our sins ...

As for closing your eyes during prayer, scholars view that it is disliked to close the eyes during prayer EXCEPT if is done to http://aboutislam.net/counseling/ask-about-islam/increase-focus-prayers/ - maintain focus and avoid distraction .

Imam al-`Izz ibn `Abd al-Salam said that it is permissible to close the eyes when necessary, if that helps the worshipper to focus more fully on his prayer.

Ibn al-Qayyim said in his Zad al-Ma`ad (1:283) ( https://www.kalamullah.com/zaad-al-maad.html - Provisions for the Hereafter ) that if a man can focus more fully on his prayer by opening his eyes, then it is better to do so....

12 Amazing Tips to Love Your Prayer Like Never Before!

Below are productivity tips based on a summary of the beautiful http://understandquran.com/fileadmin/user_upload/extras/Salah.pdf - How to taste the true beauty of salah series by Mishari Al Kharraz:

1. Say Allahu akbar and throw the world behind you

Did you ever think: why do we start our prayer with http://aboutislam.net/reading-islam/understanding-islam/on-allahs-greatness-allah-u-akbar/ - Allahu Akbar not with subhan Allah? Realize that when you say Allahu Akbar you affirm that the one before whom you are about to stand is greater than anything occupying you at that moment— greater than your sleep, your families, your bills, and your worries. Just imagine that when you say Allahu akbar while raising your hands you are throwing all of that behind you!

2. Visualize the veil

When you http://aboutislam.net/reading-islam/understanding-islam/how-do-muslims-pray/ - stand to pray , Allah commands: Raise the veils from between Me and my servant! As soon as you say Allahu Akbar and start your prayer, Allah sets His beautiful face to yours and doesn’t turn away from you, unless you do...

How to Find Peace through Prayer? 3 Powerful Triggers

... To bring about the desired state of peace and tranquility through http://aboutislam.net/spirituality/spiritual-benefits-prayer/ - prayer other emotions must exist first.

The prayer is embedded with triggers that enable these other emotions to come about which in return causes the worshiper to enter into a state of peace.

Three important triggers in the prayer will do the job. These three triggers are not just fundamental for http://aboutislam.net/reading-islam/finding-peace/remembering-allah/how-to-pray-like-the-prophet/ - salah , but for any act of worship. It may sound complicated, but it really isn’t.

Love

Experiencing love brings about the feeling of happiness. http://aboutislam.net/reading-islam/in-focus/happiness-is-folder/ - Happiness , in turn, makes one feel secure and peaceful.

The trigger for love exists very early on in http://aboutislam.net/reading-islam/finding-peace/remembering-allah/how-prayer-makes-us-better-muslims/ - prayer .

When the worshiper says in prayer, Al-Hamdu lilahi rabil’Alamin” (All perfection and praises are for Allah, the Lord of the worlds), this trigger activates the feeling of love.

http://aboutislam.net/spirituality/god-the-all-peace/ - Allah who is perfect in His sayings, actions, and judgments never wrongs a soul. The Wisdom Behind the Postures and Phrases of Prayer

Prayer establishes and reinforces http://aboutislam.net/reading-islam/finding-peace/remembering-allah/prayers-a-special-connection-with-god/ - our connection to God ; from it we gather numerous http://aboutislam.net/spirituality/countless-blessings-god/ - blessings and benefits.

Any study of Islamic prayer will explain that there are two forms of prayer.

One is ritualistic with formal requirements and manners; certain postures and phrases. This is what Muslims refer to as prayer and our discussion about benefits of the postures, movements and positions began in http://aboutislam.net/spirituality/can-prayer-postures-really-bring-us-closer-god/ - part 1 .

The other form is supplication and in its more general sense it represents an open-ended conversation with God. He listens to our entreaties and requests through http://aboutislam.net/reading-islam/finding-peace/remembering-allah/list-of-times-and-places-where-dua-is-accepted/ - dua (supplication) at any time, in any language.  In ritual prayer the http://aboutislam.net/reading-islam/understanding-islam/muslim-prayer-postures-found-in-the-bible/ - postures we make and the words we say are for a specific purpose. Developing Khushu’ is Learning a Life Skill

Anytime that mean-girl chatter in your mind tells you that you will never be able to be consistent in prayer so why try, tell her to get lost because if Allah (SWT) has made it obligatory that means you are capable.

When you are http://aboutislam.net/reading-islam/finding-peace/remembering-allah/prayer-makes-us-better-part-4/ - standing in prayer and the thoughts of the day creep in even if they aren’t negative, it’s the same voice trying to distract you from the life-affirming action you are doing. Replace it. Think of what you are saying instead. Think of standing before God. Think of your connection with Him.

I still struggle with this internal distraction during prayer and beyond. But with practice, it has become easier. I have allowed myself to grow in confidence and khushu’. But I also know it is a lifelong struggle...

Prayer and Positive Psychology – 7 Keys to Happiness

In her book, she lists, with proof, some of the most effective http://aboutislam.net/reading-islam/living-islam/7-motivation-boosters/ - happiness boosters . It’s mind-boggling that you’ll find that 100% of these joy-enhancing activities are actually sunnahs (such as “learning to forgive” and “practicing acts of kindness”) and thus acts of worship.

Muslim scholars and psychologists have a great opportunity in this field, to merge Sunnah and psychological research and transport the lives of many dejected human beings.

For the time being, let’s have a look at just one commonly performed (and most important) act of worship – the daily prayer— and see how many happiness boosters are packed in it.

1- Expressing Gratitude

“It may sound corny,” says Sonja, “but the research clearly demonstrates that you would be happier if you cultivated an ‘attitude of gratitude.’”

You Find it Hard to Pray in Arabic? 4 Tips Will Help You

Scholars have made a distinction between people capable and incapable of learning Arabic. As long as you are capable, do your best until you can recite http://aboutislam.net/shariah/quran/quranic-reflections/quran-reflections-1-relate-al-fatihah-life/ - Al-Fatihah and the essential utterances of Salah.

If you have difficulty learning Arabic, you should at least learn Al-Fatihah, and you can recite the essential utterances of prayer in your own language.

If you have only learned part of Al-Fatihah, you should recite Al-Fatihah as best as you are able, and then glorify Allah, praise Him, magnify Him, and proclaim His Oneness, so that these words of remembrance make up for whatever parts are left out of Al-Fatihah.

However, if after much effort you still cannot learn Al-Fatihah at all or anything of the Quran, you are exempted from the obligation of reciting the Quran on account of your inability to learn it. Allah Says:

Allah burdens not a soul beyond its capacity. (Quran http://quran.com/2/286 - 2:286 )

You should instead recite the five utterances of remembrance prescribed by Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)...
