Boy has heart attack on school sports field. Two friends save his life

From left: Chris Collins, Will Edgar-Gibson, Matt Grenham and assistant headteacher Matt Wardle

A pupil whose life was saved by two of his pals has returned to school for the first time since collapsing from a heart attack on the rugby pitch.

Will Edgar-Gibson, 15, was fighting for his life having just scored a try in a PE lesson rugby match at The Buckingham School.

But quick-thinking team mates Chris Collins and Matt Grenham, both 15, rushed to Will’s side and began performing CPR.

The courageous pair, who are cadets and both hope to join the forces after school, stayed by Will’s side until the air ambulance arrived to whisk him to hospital for emergency surgery.

Will returned to school on Monday but needed a day off on Tuesday to recover from the excitement.

Vancouver restaurant opens its dining room to homeless

Ten Ten Tapas wants other restaurants to do the same, offer occasional free meals to those in need

Bruce Farrer has been assigning a special project to his students

When was the last time you received a hand-written letter?

In the small Canadian town of Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan, Bruce Farrer lifts letters off a pile, pausing to examine each one with his soft, heavily lidded eyes. A high school teacher for more than 50 years, Farrer has been assigning a special project to his students: a 10-page letter handwritten to themselves in which they express their hopes and dreams, fears and experiences. He returns their letters, whether through direct mail or doorstep delivery, 20 years later.

“Having this opportunity to digest is like this little gift of somebody that I have forgotten years ago.”

“I wasn’t quite expecting that emotional roller coaster,” says one former student as she reads about her grandmother’s death, wiping away tears. “I can’t tell you how special that is to me, to be able to go back and read something that I wrote to myself when I was that age.”

“Having this opportunity to digest,” says another, “is like this little gift of somebody that I have forgotten years ago.”

Now mothers and fathers, many of Farrer’s former students look back at the days when they sat in a classroom and watched an ordinary man teach. Many found him not especially charismatic, but as they’ve grown up, so has their image of him. They see something different, more complex: a generous spirit whose lesson has transcended their perceptions of time and one another.

"I know I’m not an outstanding teacher, just an ordinary teacher,” he murmurs, his modest words soft like cotton. “Who happened to assign a rather different assignment."

Cat saves baby from freezing Russian night - video

Masha the cat saved an abandoned Russian baby by keeping him warm as temperatures dipped below zero.

Masha's owner, who lives in the city of Obninsk, thought her cat was being attacked but when she went out into the stairwell she saw the baby boy crying.

Masha was described as a "really rational creature" by paramedics, who have credited her with keeping the baby alive during the freezing night temperatures

Hundreds gather to stop cancer patient being evicted from home

More than 300 people have gathered on a quiet street in Nottingham to help stop a cancer patient being evicted from his home.

Tom Crawford has been embroiled in a lengthy battle with Bradford & Bingley bank over his mortgage.

The 63-year-old, who has lived in the house for 25 years, says he has been told he still owes more than £43,000 - but claims he doesn't owe a penny...

This is the second time he's defending his home from the bailiffs.

In July last year, http://www.itv.com/news/central/story/2014-07-25/200-strangers-block-bailiffs-from-evicting-cancer-sufferer/ - more than 200 strangers travelled from across the country to help stop him being kicked out of his home when he was served with an eviction notice.

To the Young Woman Who Noticed Us When I Hoped No One Would

Our family doesn't exactly blend in with the wallpaper. Not only are we two white parents with a brown son and daughter (something that causes enough stares and questions all by itself), but our son has noticeable developmental delays and different behaviors caused by his autism, and our daughter has physical differences with her missing and webbed digits. In other words, when we all go out together, we stand out. Usually I don't mind, and often I love it. My children are beautiful and so is our story.
"I just wanted you to have this bouquet...." I looked down to see the flowers in her hands. She quickly continued to explain...

"I was adopted as a baby and it has been a wonderful thing. We need more families like yours." I stared at her, stunned. Hadn't she seen what a disaster we were in the store? Didn't she see that we were barely able to keep it together? Didn't she see what I felt were all my failures as a mom?

As she handed me the flowers, I managed to choke out a thank you and tried to express that this meant the world to me. She patted my shoulder, told me my family was beautiful, and walked back into the store.

My steps were much slower as I finally headed to the car with my arms full of flowers and tears that had spilled over onto my cheeks. On a day when I felt like we were the worst example of family... a day when I hoped no one noticed us... she did. But she didn't see what I assumed everyone was seeing. She didn't think what I assumed everyone was thinking. She saw beauty and love and hope and family. She thought we were wonderful and it made her smile.

Blind Mother Sees Her Newborn for the First Time Using Special eSight Glasses

A woman who has been legally blind since birth was able to see her newborn for the first time using a pair of special glasses in a moment that was captured on video.

Kathy Beitz wanted badly to see her baby on the day she was born, and eSight Corporation, which creates special glasses priced at $15,000 that allows those who are legally blind to see to a certain extent, loaned her glasses for the day, according to a http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/21/blind-woman-newborn-baby_n_6518384.html?utm_hp_ref=good-news&ir=Good%20News - Huffington Post report .

Her older sister Yvonne Felix, who is also blind, uploaded the video. She said she had tried the glasses herself and was able to see her 6-year-old and 2-month-old children, but she was not able to see them when they were first born, and she wanted her sister to have that experience.

Bill and Melinda Gates Annual Letter

we think the next 15 years will see major breakthroughs for most people in poor countries.

They will be living longer and in better health. They will have unprecedented opportunities to get an education, eat nutritious food, and benefit from mobile banking.

These breakthroughs will be driven by innovation in technology — ranging from new vaccines and hardier crops to much cheaper smartphones and tablets — and by innovations that help deliver those things to more people.

The rich world will keep getting exciting new advances too, but the improvements in the lives of the poor will be far more fundamental — the basics of a healthy, productive life.

It's great that more people in rich countries will be able to watch movies on super hi-resolution screens. It's even better that more parents in poor countries will know their children aren't going to die...

Anonymous Saudi Man Has A Beautifully Simple Idea To Feed The Poor With 'Charity Fridge'
Sometimes, making a difference can be shockingly simple.

A man living in the city of Hail, Saudi Arabia, came up with a brilliant idea to feed needy people in his neighborhood while sparing them the "shame" of begging, according to Gulf News.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, installed a refrigerator on the street in front of his house and invited neighbors to donate their extra food, so that hungry people could come and eat.

The idea gained international attention after religious scholar Shaikh Mohammad Al Araifi praised the act of charity on his Twitter account with a picture of the fridge. "I've always said the people of Hail are generous. A man puts a fridge outside his house for leftover food; an indirect act of charity for the needy," he said, in a translation provided by the BBC. "Oh how I love you, Hail!"
Twitter applauded the simple gesture. “That is exactly what we needed: A simple, but bright idea that goes a long way in helping people,” posted user Sniper, according to Gulf News. “The idea should now be adopted and all large mosques in the country should place fridges to take and distribute food."

The Muslim holy month of fasting, Ramadan, will begin at the end of June. Bahraini national Salah told Gulf News that the charity fridge concept should be adopted in Bahrain during Ramadan. "It is a great act of charity that can make many people happy and satisfied,” he said. “There is the food factor, but there is also the spiritual dimension, especially during the sacred month when people engage deeply in acts of charity."

I was flying from Islamabad to Karachi last night and there was a girl onboard with a serious condition. First of all the stretcher took more seats than the patient had booked, but the other passengers managed it somehow. When we were on the way, the captain announced that the patient needs medical assistance and he requested all the doctors sitting in the plane to contact seat number 54 where the patient was lying. What a great feeling it was to see around 15 people raising from their seats and rushing towards the patient. They were all doctors and half of them were women. They gave immediate assistance to that patient. What a fabulous time it was to see all the doctors discussing and figuring out what to do. These people...they are Pakistan.

I will live for love and the rest will take care of itself. --Marina Keegan

Marina’s death granted the Keegans permission to descend into the darkest grief, to rage at everything and nothing, to blame the car, blame the boyfriend, blame the weather, blame God. But they didn’t.What should have been the first chapter of Marina Keegan’s life became the last when, five days after her graduation from Yale University, she died in a car crash. Her boyfriend was driving them both to her father’s 55th birthday party at her family’s summer house. Nobody was drinking, nobody was speeding; the car hit a guardrail and flipped. It was a moment of startling, random horror.

What Tracy and Kevin Keegan did instead was take the most dreadful thing a parent can endure—the opposite of joy, if you will—and transform it.

I was drawn to Marina’s voice and gumption, but what will stay with me for a very long time is that beauty of the Keegans’ forgiveness. It started the day after Marina’s death, when they reached out to her boyfriend, inviting him to their home and embracing him. They later went to court to make certain the charges of vehicular homicide against him were dropped because “it would break [Marina’s] heart to know her boyfriend would have to suffer more than he already has.” And then they worked diligently to make Marina’s book happen because, as Fadiman wrote, “Marina wouldn’t want to be remembered because she’s dead. She would want to be remembered because she’s good.”

I was drawn to Marina’s voice and gumption, but what will stay with me for a very long time is that beauty of the Keegans’ forgiveness. Here’s what they wrote in the book’s dedication:

“I will live for love and the rest will take care of itself” were Marina’s words on graduation day, the last time we saw her. The Opposite of Loneliness is dedicated to love. Our hope is that Marina’s message of love will inspire readers to imagine the possibilities and make a difference in the world.

To me, it strikes against an overarching narrative. Bill Gates has said that, "By 2035 there will be almost no poor countries left in the world," and this is a misleading quote your report picks up on.
You're absolutely right; it does tie in to a critique of the overall narrative. The Davos summit is where the world's super-rich, governments, and business leaders get together and try and convince themselves that they're the good guys. The discourse around the fact that the poor are getting richer—and all the sort of things that they'd like to have us believe—is quite convenient because instead of casting them as undeserving beneficiaries of a system that allows 80 billionaires to earn the same amount of money as half the world's population, it casts them as philanthropic heroes. It means that Bill Gates holds the keys to defeating poverty, which is a huge distortion of reality.

And that's wrong?
There's some truth in what he says, in that the direction the world is going in is away from there being poorer or richer countries... But we have increasingly a situation where countries are rich but the people living in them are poor because of the huge inequality of wealth.

Though the rise from 288 million to 562 million living in poverty is pretty damning, Sub-Saharan Africa's population has grown, so could you argue that it was inevitable that the numbers of poor people there would rise?
Even in terms of proportion it's not great, because if you look at it that way it just means that we've pretty much stayed where we are after the last thirty years. Thirty years of aid, thirty years of hot air from philanthropists, aid agencies, about how much they're helping Africa has actually not really done anything to reduce the proportion of people who are living underneath that completely arbitrary poverty line. And if you look at raw numbers, things are a lot worse.

That's specifically about Africa. Globally, poverty has gone down hugely, but the reason that figure has gone down is mostly because of China, which is interesting because China's probably the one place in the world that has had least involvement from aid agencies and philanthropists in terms of reducing poverty, so if poverty has reduced across the world it's definitely not anything to do with the philanthropic capitalist model.

What would you say to someone who said that people in the West are better off than at almost any other point in history?
I think that's a slight exaggeration, but in terms of standard of living, people make this argument with technology quite a lot and yes, technology does get better, and medicine gets better, but in terms of economic wellbeing, some other things have got worse.

There's no Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy type solution but part of the answer to some of these problems are quite simple. We have unfair trade rules across the world: make them fairer. Corporations are avoiding tax across the world: introduce rules to stop them doing that. Climate change is a big problem: introduce stronger environmental legislation and reduce emissions. Those are actually quite boring and difficult but nevertheless strong answers to the problems we've got in the world.

You can think of all sorts of complicated market methods to avoid these questions but you have to go back to the quite boring solutions of regulation and increasing oversight of some of the crazier parts of the market in order to make the world a better place. Ultimately, the solution is made up of these kinds of things, rather than the more exciting, technological ideas put forward at Davos.

Girl Scouts Give Cookie Revenues to 75-Year-old Woman Who Lost Everything

Eight Girl Scouts, who had planned to spend $300 on a “Spa Day” for their troop, decided to donate the money to a woman who had lost everything in a house fire.

The fourth grade girls from West Carrollton, Ohio were going to use their reward money from cookie revenues on manicures and other pampering at a local spa, but on Monday night during their bi-monthly troop meeting they heard about the misfortunes of Barbara Dolan, the great-grandmother of one of the girls.

Last weekend, Barbara’s home burned to the ground and there was no insurance. When the girls heard the news, they decided, unanimously, to forgo their Spa Day and, instead, give away the money...

The lady needs the money way more than we do.”

The moms, who have been together since kindergarten, collected an additional $200 in donations.

“We all went to the home of Mrs. Dolan’s granddaughter and the girls presented her with a handmade card and $500 inside,” Dickson told the Good News Network.

‘Make a laugh’ captures the hope and sorrow of people living in poverty

Holding his professional camera tightly, Ali Hassan roams the Egyptian slums on a daily basis, aiming to capture the lives of the deprived children, women, and old people living there.

In his photos, he tries to reflect the suffering of those who live below the poverty line – portraying the unbelievable doses of hope, faith and contentment that light up their faces and souls. Under the title “Make a laugh”, he launched his first photography campaign on   Facebook, shedding light on touching human stories that he feels demands attention.

Hassan believes that nothing makes people happier than giving them good photos of themselves. During the photo sessions, he listens to the people’s stories, problems and sufferings.

Hassan prefers to take photos of old people with their worn clothes and wrinkled faces, listening to their remarkable life experiences.

Hassan says he will never forget “Om Mahmoud”, an old lady whose son disappeared during the early days of the revolution. She searched for him everywhere and asked everyone, however, she never found him. Although she suffers from many intractable diseases, she never lost hope to see her son before she dies and she keeps waiting for him in front of her house all day and night, said Hassan.

He also loves photographing children who always find the experience fascinating and ask to see their photos more than once. He likes it when they gather in groups around him as he finds it a good chance to ask them about their interests, talents, and dreams for the future. He always returns to their houses to give them prints of the photos.

“Unfortunately, the security disruptions and the general unrest the country suffers from made the lives of those simple people unbearable. With sewage swamping the streets creating a hotbed for epidemics and diseases, they live in tiny tinplate houses whose doors are made of white curtains or rags with no furniture, no facilities and no fresh water,” he noted.

Hassan knows that making people laugh under such pathetic circumstances is a hard job but he has accepted the challenge. As he believes that making people happy is the main function of different kinds of arts, he thinks that every artist has to use his talent to make those deprived people happy, even if it will last only a few seconds.

Dutch students can live in nursing homes rent-free (as long as they keep the residents company)

NINETY-TWO-YEAR-OLD Johanna beams at the 20-year-old stepping into her room — not a visiting grandson, but rather a housemate at her retirement home.

Town planning student Jurrien is one of six who have chosen to live in the yellow-brick home in Deventer in the eastern Netherlands as part of a unique project that benefits everyone.

The university students pay no rent and in exchange spend at least 30 hours a month with some of the 160 elderly who live here, doing the things professional staff cannot always do — such as just hanging out.

“They go see the pensioners for a chat, they play games, go with them to the shopping centre, (and) do shopping for those who can’t,” says activity coordinator Arjen Meihuizen.

Gea Sijpkes, the head of the Humanitas retirement home, said: “It’s important not to isolate the elderly from the outside world.”

When you’re 96 years old with a knee problem, well, the knee isn’t going to get any better, the doctors can’t do much.

But what we can do is create an environment where you forget about the painful knee.

Preventing care ‘ghettoes’

So-called “intergenerational” projects are also springing up elsewhere in Europe, but usually not within retirement homes because of the shortage of rooms.

In Britain, a commission chaired by a former minister recommended in September that new housing for the elderly and disabled should be incorporated into shopping developments, new apartment blocks and even universities to prevent the elderly from being cut off in “care ghettoes”.

DOHA - In a corner of Qatar’s capital, a sign outside a restaurant popular with labourers reads: “If you are hungry and have no money, eat for free!!!”

The Indian brothers who own Zaiqa restaurant decided to put up the small makeshift sign about three weeks ago.

Girl Sells $47K in Bracelets to Help Friend With Skin Disease Buy a Pool

Bethany Walker wanted nothing more than to take a dip in the pool with her best friend, Anne Marie Cox, this summer.

But a rare blistering skin condition has kept nine-year-old Anne Marie from being able to swim in the public pools.

Anne Marie’s family dreamed of being able to build a saltwater pool in their own backyard for their daughter—one that would be soothing for her skin— but they couldn’t afford it.

That’s when Bethany stepped in, selling friendship bracelets made from rubber bands in an effort to help the family raise enough money to build the pool.

In just 19 weeks, Bracelets by Bethany raised more than $47,000, enough money for the Cox family to build the saltwater pool, and give their daughter what most kids take for granted  – a cool dip on a hot summer day...

Town Installs Outdoor Refrigerator so Locals Can Feed the Hungry in Spain

People in the Basque town of Galdakao, Spain, put their leftovers in the fridge — not just the ones in their homes, but the one on the street, too.

The city of about 30,000 created the country’s first communal refrigerator to help the hungry.

Alvaro Saiz, who used to run a food bank in Galdakao, came up with the idea for the “Solidarity Fridge” during the recession when he saw people going through trash bins looking for food. He figured there had to be a better way for restaurants and even individuals to give away unused food...

Great-Grandma Delivers Bag Lunches to Feed 200 Needy Kids Every Day

When this great-grandmother found out kids in her county could go hungry over the summer, she decided to feed all 200 of them — every day.

The school district in Gray’s Harbor County, Washington, didn’t have money to provide free or reduced price meals to low income kids over the summer. So Phyllis Shaughnessy, rounded up volunteers, did some fundraising, and got the Green Lantern Tavern to donate kitchen space.

She and her volunteers meet every morning to pack lunches, featuring non-perishable food, and fan out across the county delivering “Green Lantern Lunches.”

Dedicated elementary school teacher walks students home from school every day

A Memphis, Tenn. teacher is going the extra mile for his students, literally. Carl Schneider walks his kids home from school every day.

Schneider is part of a group of five teachers at Whitney Achievement who volunteer to walk students home each day. About 200 students take part in the walking program, many of whom live in apartments about a quarter-mile away from the school.

The program ensures that the students are able to get home safe and allows them to forge a special bond with their teachers...

The First Canadian City to Eliminate Homelessness – Here’s How They Did It

For the homeless population of Medicine Hat, Alberta, the right dose of the perfect solution has led to an amazing revolution.

Tonight, every one of the city’s 60,000 people are sleeping with a roof over their heads, thanks to the Canadian city’s new policy that mandates housing for anyone who has spent 10 days in a shelter or on the streets.

When city officials learn of a person living in these circumstances, they move the individual (or family) into a house or apartment. In fact, Mayor Ted Clugston says 10 days is the absolute limit—the city usually finds housing for homeless people even quicker than that...

More than 10,000 problems fixed through ‘Improve Detroit’ cell phone app

In a city that is large enough to fit Boston, Manhattan and San Francisco, it’s not easy for Detroit workers to find – and fix – thousands of problems that exist in many long-neglected neighborhoods.

But that has changed with the introduction of a new cell phone app, “Improve Detroit,” that allows users to easily alert city hall to potholes, illegal dumping sites, abandoned cars, water main breaks, busted traffic signals and broken hydrants.

In the six months since Mayor Mike Duggan’s administration launched the app, more than 10,000 problems have been fixed, city officials said today.

About 6,500 people have downloaded the app since it became available in April.

According to the city, the app has helped:

  • Clean up more than 3,000 illegal dumping sites.
  • Repair 2,092 potholes.
  • Shut off running water to 991 abandoned structures.
  • Remove 565 abandoned vehicles.
  • Repair 506 water main breaks.
  • Fix 277 traffic signal issues.

City Pays Homeless to Learn Job Skills While Beautifying Riverbanks

The new project, “Reno Works,” will employ twenty homeless people who are eager for work, giving them temporary jobs cleaning the banks of the Truckee River — with the goal of getting them full-time jobs afterwards.

The swift-moving Truckee flows through the heart of the city, past parks and casinos, but also past homeless camps and litter. The city will spend $110,000 on the project to relocate campers into shelters and provide job training for those who want to work...

Woman in Paris Creates Revolutionary Car Service For People With Disabilities

When it comes to handicap accessibility, it’s no secret that public transportation in a number of cities is given a failing grade—taxis and rental cars are also ill equipped to accommodate wheelchairs.

The Claude “Bud” Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant named for the former mayor of Carlsbad, is producing 50 million gallons of fresh http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/tag/water/ - water every day south of Los Angeles— enough for 400,000 people. That’s about 10% of the region’s water supply.

Fifteen more plants are under consideration along the http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/tag/california/ - California coast.

Water from the http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/?s=PACIFIC+OCEAN - Pacific Ocean is pumped through long, cylindrical filters which remove salt, then on to a water treatment plant miles away where it’s added to the rest of the region’s water supply before being piped to customers...

Faced With Fear, A Muslim Woman Makes A Stand — By Setting One Up

Mona Haydar is a Muslim — and she wants to talk about it.

So much so, in fact, that she set up a stand outside a library in Cambridge, Mass., with a big sign reading "Ask a Muslim." Along with a free cup of coffee and a doughnut, Haydar offered passersby an opportunity for conversation.

She says the idea occurred to her husband, Sebastian, and her over dinner one evening. As they were eating, she says, Sebastian remarked: "What if we did something kind of crazy?" ...

After the day was done, she https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1028900757181347&id=100001842973842 - posted a summary to Facebook — a post which has now garnered more than 11,000 likes and the attention of http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2015/12/21/couple-sets-ask-muslim-booth-cambridge/aOiTfhSp8wtM5zYhqaWdnO/story.html - several different http://www.mlive.com/news/flint/index.ssf/2015/12/flint_township_woman_sets_up_b.html - media organizations .

"We weren't out there that long today but the take away was clear: Keep your heads held high, dear Muslim family," she wrote in that post. "There is an overwhelming amount of love and so remember this post when you are faced with bigotry and hatred towards you or your faith.

"Remember that you have supporters too." http://www.npr.org/2015/12/27/461124403/faced-with-fear-a-muslim-woman-makes-a-stand-by-setting-one-up? -

The homeless people of London weren’t expecting gifts on Christmas, and they definitely were not expecting them from a Muslim http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/?s=Santa - Santa Claus .

Nubaid Haroon decided to send out a compassionate reminder of his religion’s core tenant this holiday season by wrapping up presents he bought with his own money and delivering them to homeless people on the streets.

12-Year-Old Arizona Girl Collects 1,000 Coats for the Homeless

"I just want people to know someone cares about them"

A 12-year-old Arizona girl spent her holiday season http://www.people.com/article/arizona-girl-collects-coats-in-radio-flyer-wagon - collecting coats for those in need.

Makenna Breading-Goodrich dropped off about 1,000 items at Phoenix Rescue Mission Shelter on Dec. 12, after going door-to-door collecting coats, jackets and hoodies for the homeless. The seventh-grader told People that she wants to help those in need keep warm for the winter.

“It gets really cold around here at night, like 30 degrees, and I want to make sure homeless people aren’t walking around without jackets or blankets at night!” Makenna said. “I just want people to know someone cares about them.”

She has been taking donations for four years through an organization she started, called Makenna’s Coats for a Cause. Each November, she begins traveling her neighborhood in Surprise, Ariz., collecting jackets on her red wagon.

“Something small can make a big difference,” she told People. “I want this to spread. A little kindness can inspire others!”

City of Austin, Texas, working to house all homeless veterans by 2016

Affordable housing is hard to find in Austin with occupancy rates through the roof. Also finding landlords willing to take city vouchers and rent their property out for $800 or less a month.

Despite the city of Austin’s struggle to house all of the homeless veterans, the Texas Homeless Network said homelessness is down across the state by 17-percent.

United States Marine Corps Veteran Gary Robinson started off the year living out of his car. Fast forward 12 months and now Gary just graduated from Austin Community College and started work as an automotive technician. He said his biggest accomplishment was finding a place he can now call home...

160 abandoned Apartments being remodeled in Ohio by volunteers for homeless

Volunteers in Campbell began remodeling two apartments on Delmar Avenue on Saturday for veterans that don’t have a home.

Four veterans will be moving into them, rent free, once they’re done. The goal of the project is to help the veterans get on their feet. After that, the next step is moving them into permanent housing once they are more stable.

Iron Soup Historical Preservation is an organization that works to remodel abandoned homes in Campbell. They have invested thousands of dollars on these two apartments to not only help veterans, but to make historical neighborhoods more attractive.

The neighborhood was full of modern apartments almost 100 years ago. Now the plan is to turn the nearly 160 apartments around, and build a veteran community...

This photo tells the story of an act of kindness credited with finding a homeless man a place to stay in the cold of winter.

A sheriff’s deputy spotted an unidentified homeless man alone in the cold midwestern weather. Sergeant Depuy gave the man a ride to a nearby McDonald’s, where he asked the staff to let him stay inside to get warm.

Alex Fischbach was watching the scene when he said the http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/tag/police/ - lawman pulled some money out of his pocket and told the http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/tag/homelessness/ - homeless man to buy something to eat.

Fischbach says the two shook hands before the officer left. He snapped a photo as the sergeant left, and says he was touched that the officer wasn’t looking for “gratitude or recognition.”...

Canadian City Completely Eradicates Homelessness With Brand New Approach

They did the opposite of what most cities do.

In the Canadian town of Medicine Hat, Alberta, where 60,000 people live, everyone has a home tonight.

That's after six years of instituting a "Housing First" policy that flips the status quo on its head but has helped restore safety and shelter to a city that needed it.

Back in 2009, Mayor Ted Clugston was actively opposing the policy, which pledges to give any person who spends ten days on the street a home. Today, he has come to realize that not only does the policy work for the people, but it works for the govenrnment, too.

Man With Heart of Gold Keeps Theater Open So Kids Have Something to Do

The Desert Historic Theatre is the only cinema within 100 miles for the people of Burns, and its owner runs it without a profit just so the kids in remote Eastern http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/tag/oregon/ - Oregon will have something to do.

“Tiny” Pedersen bought the 1940s-era movie house 13 years ago. On a good night, 30 people will turn out to see a show, buying tickets that barely cover the cost of heating the place.

Pedersen was able to keep the theater open, thanks to a full time job at an auto repair shop and some volunteers in the community, until http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/?s=HOLLYWOOD - Hollywood shifted to digital projection a few years ago.

Tiny couldn’t get films that run on the old-fashioned projectors anymore, so the town rallied to raise $100,000 to buy new digital equipment for him.

Seattle's first tiny house village for homeless to open this week

SEATTLE — On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, volunteers put the finishing touches on small houses with the kind of basic amenities you don't see in Seattle homeless camps.

"The difference is you have electricity and a lock on the door," said Steve Tucker, a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, which is hosting what organizers are calling Seattle's first tiny house village.

The 14 homes are insulated.

They'll have oil heat registers for winter and fans for summer.

Some even have extra touches like storage and sleeping platforms.

Most important, there's a central building with flush toilets, hot and cold water, and soon, a shower...

Woman uses lottery winnings to buy motel room for homeless man on night with subzero temps

WAREHAM, Mass. —A woman’s good fortune turned better when she saw an immediate opportunity to give back.

Sofia Andrade had just won $200 on a scratch ticket and was at a stop sign in New Bedford when she saw Glenn Williams.

Williams has been homeless for three years and was panhandling in the bitter cold Saturday night.

“I knew that the money never really belonged to me,” said Andrade. “This money was meant to help him.”

Andrade called Williams over to her car and took him to a coffee shop. “He was so overwhelmed by just the generosity of a coffee that he just couldn’t stop crying.”

As she spoke to Williams, she learned that local shelters had no bed space for Williams, so she decided to use her winnings to get a motel room for him close to her home in Wareham.

“I couldn’t believe there’s somebody like her,” said Williams. “She deserves a lot of the credit for where I am right now.”...

Turkish Town Does So Much for Syrian Refugees It’s Up for Nobel Peace Prize

KILIS, Turkey — The town of Kilis, a busy little place just a few miles from the Syrian border, is where many refugees fleeing the horror of war are first able to breathe a sigh of relief.

In the courtyards of its cafes and restaurants, they drink tea without fear of bombs raining down. In the shops, they buy cell phones to use to call relatives and plan their next steps.

For most, it is a stop on a longer journey: farther into Turkey or beyond, to Europe. But for more than 100,000 Syrians, it's the final destination — or at least the place where they will wait out the war.

“The people in this town have been good to us Syrians,” says Maher, a businessman who has lived in Kilis for the past two years. “Many of them have helped me in the past.”

Syrians outnumber Turkish people in Kilis. Around 120,000 have settled in the town and surrounding area, 35,000 of them in camps. One of those camps hosts some 15,000 refugees. It has a school, health care facilities and well-built container shelters.

Those kind of numbers could easily wear on a local population. Indeed, in many towns in Turkey and Lebanon, refugees are seen as a burden. But here, the locals have remained strikingly charitable...

Virginians Deliver 114,000 Pounds of Winter Warmth to Refugees in Turkey

http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/News-Conf-released-Northern-Virginia-Regional-Commission-.jpg">

Local governments working with volunteers from religious groups and private business in http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/?s=Virginia - Virginia delivered more than 72 tons of coats and blankets this winter to Syrian refugees in Turkey.

The Northern Virginia Regional Commission, made up of 14 local http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/?s=Government - governments in the Washington, DC suburbs, has been coordinating the coat and blanket drive for each of the last three winters.

The number of coats and blankets quickly reached 144,710 pounds — more than four times as much as in the group’s first drive.

The Paxton Companies and Maersk stepped in to ship the 4,900 boxes of donations for free, delivering them to Eastern Turkey. This month, a team from Virginia joined two nonprofit groups there, http://embracerelief.org/ - Embrace Relief and http://www.kym.org.tr/?lang=en - Kimse Yok Mu, to help distribute the cold weather gear to families and individuals bracing against the cold.

Some of the volunteers wrote notes and tucked them in the pockets, so http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/?s=Refugee - refugee children would receive warm wishes along with their warm clothes.

This is a great story from China:

Son takes his paralyzed father with him to university and cares for him while he studies

Zhao Delong suffered from polio when he was very young, but his parents fought to find treatment for him. After undergoing surgery, he was once again able to walk.

Unfortunately, his life took a sharp turn for the worse again shortly after being admitted into university. Soon after his dad fell ill and became paralyzed. His mother did not handle the situation well and fell into a deep depression.

To repay his dad's love and kindness for when he was crippled as a child, he decided to take the old man with him to college...

Tesco to give all unsold food to charity after finalising deal

Tesco has agreed a deal to donate all the unsold food from its stores to charity.

The supermarket giant announced plans to work with 5,000 local charities across the UK in an initiative that aims to eradicate all its food waste by the end of 2017.

It said the plan followed a "farm to fork" commitment to tackle food waste by its suppliers.

The latest figures released by the company show 55,400 tonnes of food were thrown away at its stores and distribution centres across the country in 2015.

The plan is part of a nationwide roll-out of a 14-store pilot programme called the Community Food Connection.

The project, which lasted over six months, has provided more than 22 tonnes of food for vulnerable people - the equivalent of 50,000 meals...

Islamic School In UK’s Top 100 for Third Year

For the third year in a row, Preston Muslim Girls’ High School has been placed in the top 100 schools nationally, achieving a hat-trick remarkable success.

“At PMGHS (Preston Muslim Girls’ High School) we don’t just aim for the stars, we reach them; we don’t just expect our pupils to reach their targets, we want them to exceed them,” delighted headteacher Mufti Javid, told Lancashire Evening Post on Thursday, March 17.

“We want our girls to be better than they ever thought they could be to be more than they ever thought was possible.”

Javid congratulated all students and their parents on their hard work and success.

“We have high expectations at PMGHS and these pupils have had to work hard for what they have achieved,” he said.

“I am certain that the excellent progress they have made, their outstanding GCSE results and their all-round education will equip them well for future successes.

“A special thanks to all of the staff, governors and parents as well. We know how important this partnership is ensuring that our pupils do well. As our students move on to further education, training and employment we know that the skills, knowledge and experiences that they have gained from attending this highly commended school have provided an invaluable bedrock for their future success. We wish them all well.”

For years, independent Islamic schools remained at the top score of UK GCSE results, setting example for faith schools as successful, highly-achieving and inspiring educational institutes in Britain.

The Muslim schools overall average of students who received 5 or more A*- C grade GCSEs, including English & Maths, exceeded the national average with 9 schools achieving a 100% success rate – only 55 schools achieved the 100% landmark in the whole of the UK...

Jumbo Donair restaurant gets big boost from small gesture

Customers fill restaurant after Maher Taweel's good deed goes viral

Maher Taweel was shocked to open his Edmonton donair shop on Tuesday to a crowd of new customers. The reason? His small act of kindness.

"Everyone just came to say 'Thank you. You're a good man'," Taweel said Tuesday afternoon.

It was the busiest his restaurant, Jumbo Donair on 66th Street, has been since he opened two years ago, he said.

He owes it all to one tiny gesture.

On Monday, a young man came into Taweel's shop, but couldn't afford to buy anything.

"He said to me 'I am so hungry. I need some food'," Taweel said. "I said 'Of course man. What would you like?' "

He sent the man off with a heaping plate of poutine and didn't think anything of it. But another customer saw the whole thing and posted it on Facebook...

Pilot Aborts Take-Off So Grandparents Can Bid Farewell To Dying Grandson

But after the pair alerted the cabin crew, the kind-hearted pilot made the bold decision to make a U-turn on the runway.

The couple were able to disembark, while helpful Etihad Airways staff found their car and had it waiting.

They were able to make it to hospital to spend their last moments with their grandson, who tragically died the next day...

New Floor Tiles Generate Electricity Via Footsteps

http://www.wired.com/2012/07/people-light-olympic-walkway/ - Pavegen floor tiles  generate electricity by harnessing the power of footsteps.

The tiles are a kind of  http://www.wired.com/2009/11/powertrain-innovation-of-the-year-awarded-to-kers/ - kinetic energy recovery system.  We’ve seen these before in  http://www.wired.com/2011/09/porsche-911-gt3-r-hybrid/ - race cars  and  https://www.wired.com/2014/07/f1-kers-london-buses/ - buses —but where recovery systems in automobiles convert the kinetic energy normally lost in braking to electrical energy, Pavegen tiles are all about capturing the spring in your step.

Tread on a tile and the surface depresses up to one centimeter (Kemball-Cook compares the sensation to walking in a children’s play-area). The downward force drives an energy-storing flywheel inside the tile, which spins to convert kinetic energy into electrical energy through electromagnetic induction.

It’s like a generator—only instead of spinning a turbine with wind, water, or coal, it’s spinning a flywheel with footsteps...

World’s Largest Vertical Farm Near NYC Uses 95% Less Water and No Pesticides

In the middle of America’s most urban metropolitan area, the world’s largest vertical http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/?s=Farm - farm is about to deliver its first harvest of sweet, leafy baby greens.

In a warehouse just outside New York City, near Newark, http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/?s=New+Jersey - New Jersey, this 70,000 square-foot indoor farm will produce two million pounds of fresh produce every year once it is in full bloom

AeroFarm is using “aeroponic” farming to grow massive amounts of food, but instead of taking of acres of land and tons of water, it is all done in a confined space. Crops grow in shelf-like bins that rely on special LED lights instead of sunshine. Instead of soil, the plants grow in a reusable fabric made from recycled plastic bottles that can be easily cleaned and sanitized between crops– eliminating the need for pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides.

The vertical farm can grow 70 times more food per square foot than farmers can raise in an open field. Because the facility recirculates http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/?s=Water - water, it uses only 5% as much water and half as much fertilizer, which often pollutes nearby streams.

Hi-Tech Vests Could Help Communication For Hearing-Impaired

Using the sense of touch to replace the sense of hearing may seem like science fiction, but it's very much a reality and it could be a game-changer for people who are deaf.

It started out as the doctorate project of Scott Novich in the lab of neuroscientist and best-selling author David Eagleman. The goal was to create a vest that allows the deaf to feel speech.

Woman posts online about a hard-working man she knows who walks 16 miles/day and works two jobs.

Post goes viral and local car dealership gives him a car

A New Hampshire man was applauded for his hard work after a customer he served wrote about him in a Facebook post...

Bigler told WBIN that he works 20-hour shifts straight on Sundays and Mondays. He walks a total of approximately 16 miles to get to both jobs. He said he did what he had to do to see his son and to pay his bills.

As a result of Griffiths' Facebook post, which was shared more than 20,000 times, reached Autoserv of Tilton, New Hampshire.

"I thought we probably have a couple cars here that we could just donate to him so he doesn't have to walk 20 miles a day," said Ryan Parks, a sales manager at Autoserv.

The car dealership gifted Bigler a 2005 Honda Accord...

MIT researchers design a solar-powered desalination device for rural India

Wright and Winter believe that by designing a community system that can provide tasty, desalinated water at an affordable price, all villagers — especially those who are poorer and tend to drink contaminated, high-saline water on a regular basis — will be more likely to consistently drink water that’s clean and healthy...

The way Wright and Winter see it, they have to engineer a system for low cost, low waste, and low energy consumption. It is a mighty tall order indeed, and certainly one that can’t be fulfilled just by simplifying a solution that already exists in a developed country.

They started by identifying a system that would work best for the salinity of brackish groundwater in these rural villages. They chose electrodialysis reversal (EDR), because at the area’s typical salinity level of 500 to 2,000 ppm, it requires 25 to 70 percent less energy than RO and can recover more than 90 percent of the feed water.

EDR, which has been commercially available since the 1960s, works by pumping feed water through a stack alongside alternating cation and anion exchange membranes. When a voltage is applied across the stack, anions in the water are pushed toward the anode but are blocked by the cation exchange membranes, which only allow cations to cross, and the opposite is true for the cations. In this way, the salt is separated from the feed water and the resulting concentrate stream is recirculated until it is too salty to continue and is pumped into a nearby evaporation pond. Wright’s system utilizes UV light to kill biological contaminants in the water as well.

Strangers on a train: GO riders unite to help Syrian family get to their destination

Some 50 people came together to 'do the right thing'

When Valerie Taylor spotted a family of newcomers looking lost in the hustle and bustle of rush hour at Toronto's main Union Station on Wednesday, she offered to help them find their train. What she didn't know was that some 50 people would do the same, on a day that would turn out to be one of her most memorable trips home ever.

Taylor, a psychiatrist at Toronto's Women's College Hospital, said she was heading home on Wednesday after what had been a hectic few days. The heat was blazing, she was tired and looking forward to getting home, when she spotted a family of seven with two baby strollers and several heavy bags.

They looked confused, she said, and a young woman was trying to help them.

Taylor went over to see if she could lend a hand.

"Are you new here?" she asked. Only one of the children, who said he was 11, could speak much English.

"Yes," he said. They had just arrived from Syria four months ago, he told her, and were looking to get to Ancaster, about 85 kilometres southwest of Toronto, to spend a few days with family there...
