As the Islamophobia wave gets stronger and stronger each day, with the US Presidential elections this year and other issues around the globe, this thread will gather resources to respond to the Islamophobia Brigade which often visits this forum.

This will help us save time of going back again and again, year after year, to the same issues.

The first resource is from The University of California, Berkeley, and is titled "Islamophobia Studies Journal"

Dealing with Islamophobia: Lesson from Allah

An excellent reminder by Dr. Yasir Qadhi that Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, when he was in Makkah also dealt with Islamophobia.

How did Allah (SWT) guide him to deal with it?

Verses from the Qur'an were revealed when Muslims were being persecuted in Makkah, the first Islamophobia, where Allah (SWT) says:

"We know that you, [O Muhammad], are saddened by what they say. And indeed, they do not call you untruthful, but it is the verses of Allah that the wrongdoers reject."
( http://quran.com/6/33 - 6:33 )

It's completely fine to feel hurt ... It's human to feel hurt...

When people say nasty things to us, it's normal to feel hurt.

And that is what Allah (SWT) says to the Prophet, peace be upon him: We know it hurts, in Chapter 15.

"And We already know that your breast is constrained by what they say. So exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord and be of those who prostrate [to Him]. And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty (death)." ( http://quran.com/15/99 - 15:97-99 )

So when you feel that distress, always praise Allah (SWT), fall down in sajdah and pray, and continue to worship Allah until the end of your life.

So the number one way to alleviate this pain is to open up a channel of communication with Allah (SWT). Praise Allah, make du'aa to Allah, and continue to worship Allah.

When the world seems to hate you, know that Allah (SWT) loves you.

So the Prophet, peace be upon him, is being told as the animosity increases, you should increase your relationship with Allah.

And this is an explicit verse: as Islamophobia goes up, so should our connection with Allah. This will calm us down, this will bring us the courage and the patience to withstand all that is happening around us.

If we don't have Allah we have nothing, and if we have Allah we don't need anything else.

So just ignore their hatred, you are in your bubble of worship, just keep on going...

A Muslim parent's guide to talking to children about acts of violent extremism

Muslim children are growing up in a challenging time in America.

Our nation is engaged in military conflicts in places with predominantly Muslim populations, and the domestic war on terror is focused disproportionately on Muslim citizens.

There is also a surge in Islamophobia and hate crimes against Muslims in America. Round the clock cable news coverage, combined with a constant exposure to social media contributes to a heightened sense of insecurity and urgency for all Americans and especially Muslims.

In this complex environment, it is important for parents of Muslim children to recognize their own needs and their children’s needs...

Dealing With Racism & Islamophobia

Donald Trump, one of the many presidential candidates in the current US election, are using hate speech and bigotry to advance their political agenda.

He has advocated on banning Muslims from entering the country, claiming that Muslims should be registered in national databases, and more recently, Muslims are worthy of being killed with bullets dipped in pig’s blood.

What impact is this anti-Islamic rhetoric have on our communities, both here in Canada and across the border?

How should we deal and respond in these times, despite our difficulties and challenges?

We sit down with Dr. Shabir Ally to discuss this topic further...

UK Muslims Reach Out in Islamophobia Awareness Month

WALSALL – Speaking to young women at the Muslim Engagement and Development (Mend), event in Palfrey Community Centre, was sobering. In Walsall, West Midlands, students facing all the pressures of college courses and finances, have another pressure to deal with; regular attacks linked to their faith and ethnicity.

“Shouted abuse, the usual you know” said one hijab-wearing student, recounting white middle aged men harassing her in the high street.

“Being spat at isn’t nice,” said another. “Abuse, swearing the usual words ‘Terrorist, extremist, ISIS’”.

The students’ worries were echoed by their newest Walsall representative, Sabina Ditta, elected to the council earlier this year.

“Islamophobia around here has increased and the abuse both verbal and physical is normal now,”...

6 Rules Of Islamophobia In America

The Huffington Post tracked Islamophobia in the U.S. throughout 2016. Here’s what we learned

... we developed http://testkitchen.huffingtonpost.com/islamophobia/ - The Islamophobia Project , and committed to tracking anti-Muslim violence, vandalism, discrimination, public policy and political speech throughout 2016.

The timing of the incidents we collected helped reveal patterns. We http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/anti-muslim-hate-trump-supporters_us_57fbcd79e4b0e655eab66379 - that Trump supporters attacked, harassed, or plotted to kill Muslims at least 13 times during the election cycle, proving a potential link between Trump’s rhetoric and the actions of supporters. We documented  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/anti-muslim-attacks-eid-al-adha_us_57d80602e4b0fbd4b7bb650c - - surges in anti-Muslim incidents during Muslim holidays.

It’s now been a year, and our project is a sad and seemingly endless scroll through nearly 400 stories of Muslims in America being attacked, threatened, scapegoated, and profiled, seeing their places of worship vandalized and their faith denigrated.

An email address we set up as a source for tips — mailto:islamophobia@huffingtonpost.com - — generated hundreds of responses. Many people expressed gratitude for the project. One email led to a http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/muslim-veteran-graffiti-locker_us_57e03e50e4b0071a6e08d719 - about a Muslim Army veteran who found the word “terrorist” written on his locker. Mostly, we received anti-Muslim hate mail...

High Quality resources for School to tackle Islamophobia

Muslim community and advocacy group MEND (Muslim Engagement & Development) has recently made public a wealth of high quality resources to be used in schools to teach about and tackle Islamophobia.

The content is designed to equip teachers with materials and statistics to facilitate discussions about Islamophobia in line with the PSHE Association’s guidelines on syllabus content.

With ChildLine’s experimental data on bullying in playgrounds revealing a 69% increase in ‘racist’ bullying with the most common words used beingbomber’, ‘terrorist’ and ‘go back home where you came from’, there is a strong possibility that Muslim kids are bearing the brunt of this racism.

There are Videos , Presentation and Brochure  :

The video posted on the above link gives a glimpse of what some Muslim students go through at school in the UK:

Manhattan anti-Sharia demonstration dwarfed by Islam-supporting counter-protesters

Anti-Muslim protesters marching in Lower Manhattan Saturday were met by a larger group of counter-protesters who drowned them out with chants of their own.

The two sides faced off in Foley Square, where ACT for America, a lobbying organization opposed to Muslim immigration, organized a “March against Sharia” — part of a series of nationwide marches the group organized Saturday.

About 100 demonstrators carrying signs with anti-Islamic slogans — one reading simply “NO MORE MUSLIMS” — shouted against Sharia law, which ACT for America argues is threatening the United States. The organization is designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center as an anti-Muslim hate group...

Across Centre St., several hundred protesters — branding themselves as anti-fascist — brought out cowbells, drums and air horns in an attempt to stop the anti-Muslim side from being heard.

“We’re making so much noise to drown out the fact that they are furthering hate speech. I do not believe they have a right to a platform. They are planning murder and mayhem,” said Eric Josephson, 66, a retired union organizer from the Bronx.

“This is to attempt to push back against Nazis and other extreme right wingers, who are apparently protesting against a movement to impose Sharia law in the U.S. This is obvious horse manure. There is no such movement.” ...

Sarsour: I’m Islamophobes Worst Nightmare

NEW YORK –Targeted in a vehement Islamophobic campaign, American Muslim activist http://aboutislam.net/muslim-issues/america/who-is-linda-sarsour/ - Linda Sarsour decided to speak out, publishing a Washington Post op-ed in which she blamed the outrage over her use of the word jihad on conservative media.

http://aboutislam.net/muslim-issues/america/muslim-group-pushes-back-hate-targeting-linda-sarsour/ - “This week , conservative media outlets took a speech I gave to the largest gathering of Muslims in America out of context and alleged that I had called for a violent “jihad” against the president. I did not,” Sarsour wrote on Monday, July 10.

“Sadly, this is not a new experience for me. Since the Women’s March on Washington, which I had the privilege of co-chairing with inspirational women from across the country, my family and I have received countless threats of physical violence.

“These ugly threats come from people who also spout anti-Muslim, xenophobic and white-supremacist beliefs. Their sole agenda is to silence and discredit me because I am an effective leader for progress, a Palestinian American and Brooklyn-born Muslim woman. In short, I am their worst nightmare.” ...

Their sole agenda is to silence and discredit me because I am an effective leader for progress, a Palestinian American and Brooklyn-born Muslim woman. In short, I am their worst nightmare.

I began my work as director of the Arab American Association of New York in the wake of the horrific attacks of 9/11. As crisis after crisis struck Arab and Muslim communities, from the backlash to the “Ground Zero mosque” to the anti-Muslim hearings held by Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) to the rampant surveillance of New York City’s Muslim communities, I became more vocal about Islamophobia’s terrible impact on my community, city and country.

Because of that, I become a target of the https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/religion/reports/2015/02/11/106394/fear-inc-2-0/ - Islamophobia industry , a well-funded group of organizations and spokesmen who fuel anti-Muslim sentiment through misleading narratives, propaganda, local policies and the vilification of Muslim activists and public figures.

But the post-9/11 environment did not prepare me for the onslaught of vitriol that has come my way since January. First came a campaign to http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/controversial-muslim-activist-applauded-cuny-graduation-article-1.3214466 - remove me as the commencement speaker at City University of New York’s School of Public Health and Health Policy.

With hired security at my side, I gave a speech that focused on the rise of hate crimes and xenophobia and the importance of choosing to never be bystanders in the face of injustice. I honored Ricky John Best, Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche and Micah Fletcher, who http://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/man-indicted-in-double-fatal-portland-oregon-train-attack/ - saved two young African American women, one of them Muslim, in Portland when they were attacked by a white supremacist. Both Best and Namkai-Meche lost their lives that day.

Now comes the malicious twisting of the speech I gave at the Islamic Society of North America’s 54th annual convention.

In my speech — https://www.facebook.com/isnahq/videos/10154538687786105/ - you can watch the unedited version here — I sent not a call to violence, but a call to speak truth to power and to commit to the struggle for racial and economic justice. I was speaking to an all-Muslim audience; as an American, I should be free to share and discuss scripture and teachings of my beloved Prophet.

My statements were clear, and my activism track record is even clearer: My work has always been rooted in nonviolence as espoused by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Most disturbing about this recent defamation campaign is how it is focused on demonizing the legitimate yet widely misunderstood Islamic term I used, “ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/global-opinions/wp/2017/07/08/jihad-is-not-a-dirty-word/ - jihad ,” which to majority of Muslims and according to religious scholars means “struggle” or “to strive for.” This term has been hijacked by Muslim extremists and right-wing extremists alike, leaving ordinary Muslims to defend our faith and in some cases silenced. It sets a dangerous precedent when people of faith are policed and when practicing their religion peacefully comes with consequences.

Nevertheless, the attacks from xenophobes and the conservative media have continued. It saddens me deeply that my three children are frightened. It angers me that I have to think about securing my physical safety even while walking through the neighborhoods of Brooklyn.

Every day, I speak about women’s issues, indigenous rights, the necessity to fight for black lives and against the Muslim and refugee bans.

I believe wholeheartedly that we must fight injustice and inequality — through marches and direct actions, through policy changes, and through our own voices permeating media spaces.

My views are not unique or special, and many activists around the country express them as well. The reasons I am subjected to such particularly public vitriol are simple: I am a Palestinian American woman in a hijab who has become a familiar presence and name in American living rooms when it comes to nonviolent resistance and activism.

Indeed, those targeting me have an even broader agenda: to silence and discredit racial-justice activists altogether because we are awakening the masses.

But I refuse to be intimidated.

I will not walk away from the people and communities whom I love deeply.

I will to continue to raise my voice for justice and equality for all, organize communities who want to defend the rights of black people, stand against policies that target and marginalize Muslims, and advocate for health care for all people.

Dissent is the highest form of patriotism, and I intend to continue to push my country to respect the rights of all its citizens.

I will not be silenced.

Boston Launches Anti-Islamophobia Poster Campaign

The city of Boston is launching a poster campaign to fight Islamophobia by encouraging bystanders to intervene, in a non-confrontational way, if they witness anti-Muslim harassment.

Starting Monday, the city began installing 50 posters around the city with advice on what to do if you see Islamophobic behavior.

The posters recommend sitting by a victim of harassment and talking with them about a neutral subject while ignoring the harasser...

CAIR Issues '9 Steps to Dismantle White Supremacy and Islamophobia'

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 8/21/2017) -- The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today issued "9 Steps to Dismantle White Supremacy and Islamophobia" in response to both the recent deadly terrorist attack on anti-racist protests in Charlottesville, Va., and the rise in Islamophobic sentiment and hate incidents in recent months.

The nine steps include requesting the removal of Confederate symbols, engaging in "courteous conversations" on race, sexism, xenophobia, bigotry, and Islamophobia, demanding that President Trump fire staffers with white supremacist ties, hosting a community celebration to challenge hate, boycotting racist and Islamophobic speakers, and protecting the right to vote.

The Washington-based civil rights organization said it has witnessed an unprecedented increase in hate incidents targeting American Muslims and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump

CAIR asks community members to report any bias incidents to police and to CAIR's Civil Rights Department at tel:%28202%29%20742-6420 - 202-742-6420 or by filing a report at: http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001qQr2KLlWwrsDJBceM9aEqRINDATCBTPESbwF5AHoDyhzmakeeZzr8I4nmuYCLFPvPutxX4pR1XRrWVLcPST_h-zZdNFqAexRSSXkZiU_B_FupX8F3dmSxDdvcvL5Na64kNwyTi4EwrWZPdcyi_Bn6bxrjQeGy4E4MSYcWrwHz3k9Sn-fXwfPBQ==&c=LxTmuNNNJqIFqOPQKRWOYcGAwfUKWdC5ODE2aSQtPfsIzdNhqS8ohQ==&ch=q71zb_zINJgIlY3j4E9HIHtrlZjv1W1glGBETotOZlrkVuQKOXnqYQ== - http://www.cair.com/report

Because of the rise in hate incidents, CAIR recently launched an app to share critical "know your rights" information and to simplify the process to report hate crimes and bias incidents.

Has The BBC Found The Best Cure for Islamophobia?

A recent BBC video praised Muslim youth in Birmingham, UK, for their voluntary work in helping the city deal with its bin strike in recent weeks.

This is the video they released:

Doing voluntary work for the local community is indeed the best cure for Islamophobia, a win-win situation for all Muslims around the world to focus on in the coming years.

Whether it's helping the poor, the elderly or anyone in need, that is what we should focus on.

New 2017 Report on Islamophobia, UK

Two decades since Runnymede was first credited with coining the term 'Islamophobia' in  https://www.runnymedetrust.org/companies/17/74/Islamophobia-A-Challenge-for-Us-All.html - our flagship 1997 report , we look at how the phenomenon has evolved over the past 20 years, and how it manifests itself today.

Download: https://www.runnymedetrust.org/uploads/Islamophobia%20Report%202018.pdf - Islamophobia: Still a challenge for us all

This anniversary report (released November 2017) brings together varied perspectives from leading thinkers on inequality and Muslims in Britain, unpacking issues such as integration, hate crime, gender, identity and, of course, racism.

The views expressed in each essay are those of the named authors and do not necessarily represent Runnymede's organisational position.

https://www.runnymedetrust.org/uploads/Islamophobia%20Report%202018-Part%201.pdf - Islamophobia Part 1: Understanding

In this introductory section Runnymede's Farah Elahi and Dr Omar Khan examine what is understood by the term 'Islamophobia' and Dr Claire Alexander of the University of Manchester looks at 'Raceing Islamophobia', expanding on the definition of it as a form of racism.

https://www.runnymedetrust.org/uploads/Islamophobia%20Report%202018-Part%202.pdf - Islamophobia Part 2: Mapping
In this section various authors map the evidence of modern-day Islamophobia and look at how it manifests itself across key areas, including education, employment, housing, health, hate crime, integration, gender, globalisation and the government's counter-terrorism programme 'Prevent'.

Muslim Students Fight Islamophobia in North America

http://msanational.org/ - The Muslim Student Association (MSA) in North America has launched an initiative to fight rising sentiments against Muslim communities in the United States and Canada.

The “United Against Islamophobia” campaign aims “to help build bridges of understanding between Muslim students and their diverse allies across college & university campuses throughout North America”, MSA said in a statement.

“We believe that standing up as inter-sectional allies for millions of young Muslim college and university students can help to address growing xenophobia and bigotry which is affecting millions of women, Latinos, African-American, LGBT and Jewish students around the world as well,” it said.

MSA National is a non-profit organization that strives to facilitate networking, educating, and empowering the students of today to be citizens   of tomorrow’s community, according to the group’s website...

Seattle Workshop Fights Islamophobia

SEATTLE – Seattle Muslims have organized a workshop to counter rising Islamophobic crimes targeting Muslim women in the US, promoting women safety and teaching them how to cooperate with police to protect themselves.

“We don’t know what our right, we don’t know what to do,” Farhiya Mohamed, executive director of the Somali Family Safety Taskforce, told http://q13fox.com/2018/03/25/rising-hate-crimes-in-seattle-prompts-workshop-for-womens-safety/ - q13fox on Sunday.

Mohamed is referring here to the new workshop called “Hijabs + Harassment” hosted on Sunday, March 25, in Seattle.

The idea of the workshop came to Mohamed’s mind when many women in the community started posing questions about what to do if someone yells a racial slur while they’re at a bus stop or physically attacks them because they’re wearing hijab. “So, I decided it was time to put together an educational workshop to address those concerns,” she explained.

The workshop organizers themselves have similarly experienced such Islamophobic assaults...

UK Muslims ‘Grateful’ as Local Council Adopts Islamophobia Definition

  • So far only four councils in the UK have adopted the definition recommended by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on British Muslims
  • “Islamophobia is real, it affects individuals and families”
  • “There is no place for hate in Islington,” said Cllr Richard Watts, Islington Council leader.

ISLINGTON – The Chair of Finsbury Park Mosque, Mohammed Kozbar, has welcomed, on March 5, the decision of Islington Council to adopt a new definition of Islamophobia, urging the British Government to take more action on the phenomenon, Islington Now http://islingtonnow.co.uk/mosque-leaders-welcome-council-decision/ - reports .

“We’re pleased to have Islington on board. Islamophobia is real, it affects individuals and families. We as a community are grateful to Islington Council as the public will learn about the issue of Islamophobia,” Kozbar expressed.

Islington Council is the fourth in Britain to adopt the Islamophobia definition recommended by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on British Muslims. Newham, Redbridge, and Oxford are the only other councils to have adopted the definition.

Actually, no official British definition of Islamophobia existed until the APPG on British Muslims report was published last November.

On his behalf, the leader of Islington Council, Cllr Richard Watts, said: “There’s no place for hate in Islington. We’re proud to be a welcoming, inclusive borough that celebrates diversity and champions inclusion.”

Kozbar added: “We’d like to put more pressure on the http://aboutislam.net/muslim-issues/europe/uk-mosque-creates-homework-club-helps-gcse-students/ - government to adopt this definition as the Muslim community and the wider community will benefit.”

In fact, Finsbury Park Mosque has been the target of repeated Islamophobic attacks of late. It was the site of a terrorist attack in 2017, when Darren Osborne drove a van into a crowd gathered outside killing one man and injuring 12 others.

In a more recent attack, a pig’s head was put on a gate at the entrance while arsonists have also targeted the mosque.

The estimates of 2009 suggested a total of about 2.4 million Muslims over all the UK. According to the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, the number of Muslims in Britain could now be around 3 million.

Between 2001 and 2009 the http://aboutislam.net/muslim-issues/europe/visit-mosque-day-hundreds-british-mosques-open-doors/ - Muslim population increased roughly ten times faster than the rest of society. Most Muslim immigrants to Britain came from formerly occupied nations.

The London Borough of Islington in England has an estimated population of 215,667. The entity remains the second-smallest borough in London and the third-smallest district in England.

Parliamentary Group in UK Defines Islamophobia

LONDON – The All Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims has published a report outlining the definition of Islamophobia which has been endorsed by MPs, community activists, and inter-faith organizations, Anadolu Agency https://www.aa.com.tr/en/europe/uk-parliamentary-group-defines-islamophobia/1324430 - reported on November 29.

The report says:https://news.gallup.com/poll/157082/islamophobia-understanding-anti-muslim-sentiment-west.aspx - Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness.”

The group launched a project in April to define Islamophobia in a way acceptable to all British Muslim communities and one that could “operate across governmental, public, community and private sector organizations.”

The group members collected accounts of many Islamophobic experiences faced by Muslims.

The report highlights that there has been no attempt made by the British government to adopt a definition of Islamophobia despite its recognition of the negative impact on British Muslim communities.

“The detectable shift from overt to subtler or respectable, manifestations of Islamophobia — the normalization of the prejudice to the extent it is rendered almost invisible to many — warrants a definition that can arrest and reverse its present trajectory,” the report added.

The report also gives in-depth analysis on how Muslims living in Britain strongly identify themselves as being British, show loyalty to the UK, and believe that Islam and its way of life are compatible to British values and way of life.

In recent years there has been a http://aboutislam.net/muslim-issues/europe/hate-crimes-rise-40-uk-umbrella-muslim-group-calls-action/ - significant increase in anti-Muslim hate crime in the UK with 2017 having a record number of Islamophobic attacks.

http://aboutislam.net/muslim-issues/europe/hate-crimes-rise-40-uk-umbrella-muslim-group-calls-action/ - Tell Mama , a multi-faith monitoring group, recorded over 1,200 reports of Islamophobic incidents, a 26-percent surge from the previous year.

The UK last month reported a https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/748598/hate-crime-1718-hosb2018.pdf - 17% increase in hate crimes over the past year, with 94,098 incidents recorded by police, up from about 40,000 reported in 2012.

On the same track, a conference organized by Stand Against Racism & Inequality (SARI), Council of Bristol Mosques, and Somali Forum to tackle Islamophobia in the media and “promote positive reporting with Muslim communities” is being held in Bristol.

Organizers have invited journalists from local TV, radio, newspapers, press offices and websites to Greenbank Mosque to meet representatives from the city’s mosques and Muslim communities.

Alex Raikes MBE, from SARI, said: “We had set up The Tackling Islamophobia Working Group (TIWG) to bring Muslim community representatives, police and other agencies together across the Avon and Somerset area.”

“We want the media to recognize the power they have to influence by ensuring positive messages and respect for Muslim communities in our city in what they broadcast or print,” Raikes demanded.

Iowa Groups Send Message Against Islamophobia

IOWA – As American community sees the growth of Islamophobia to epidemic proportions, religious organizations and academics in Cedar Rapids, eastern http://aboutislam.net/muslim-issues/america/iowa-muslims-lutherans-donate-thanksgiving-meals/ - Iowa , are planning an event next month to address the problem in the city home to America’s first mosque, The Gazette https://www.thegazette.com/subject/opinion/staff-columnist/islamophobia-todd-green-iowa-luther-coe-college-charles-crawley-inter-religious-council-cedar-rapids-muslim-islam-mother-mosque-20190310?fbclid=IwAR32uwkBzxy4wVh03fOF7-KD0cUX7hCDT4l_16wLaHep9lB9luwtPQL3Uso - reported .

“Islamophobia is a problem that exists from coast to coast, in small towns and large cities, in communities with a long-standing Muslim presence and in communities in which Muslims are fairly new,” Todd Green, associate professor of religion at Luther College and author, said.

“In this regard, it [Cedar Rapids city] is not much different from the rest of the nation in that it has not been shielded from the anti-Muslim bigotry and racism that other regions and communities have been experiencing,” he said.

“At the same time, the fact that Cedar Rapids is home to the http://aboutislam.net/muslim-issues/america/hundreds-shield-us-oldest-mosque-support-muslims/ - Mother Mosque makes the city a promising venue for conversations about Islamophobia,” Green said. “From the history of Islam in Cedar Rapids, we are reminded that Islam is not a foreign religion, nor is it at odds with American values or a threat to American identity.”

Green is the guest speaker at an April 2 event in Cedar Rapids.

The event is organized by the Inter-Religious Council of Linn County along with Coe College, the Catherine McAuley Center, Temple Judah, Mount Mercy University, Cornell College, the Mother Mosque, and others.

“I recently read a novel by Louis de Bernieres, ‘Birds Without Wings,’” said Charles Crawley, president of the Inter-Religious Council of Linn County. The book, set in Turkey in the early 20th century, documents how international events tore apart Christians and Muslims who lived together peaceably for centuries.

“If we aren’t proactive, the same thing could happen here, with national and international events used to separate people on a local level,” he said. “So we want people to know there are forces actively promoting Islamophobia.”

Countering Islamophobia

Green’s two books on Islamophobia, “The Fear of Islam: An Introduction to Islamophobia in the West” and “Presumed Guilty: Why We Shouldn’t Ask Muslims to Condemn Terrorism”, propose alternative ways to engage each other in pursuit of counterterrorism.

According to Green, Islam is one facet of America’s cultural and religious landscape.

“It’s had a home in this community, right here in the Heartland of America, for generations. Muslims helped create the Cedar Rapids that we know today. That’s a powerful message in this age of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim fearmongering,” he said.

Building bridges in society can also help people of differing backgrounds to engage with each other.

“Personal relationships have the greatest potential to move the needle against prejudice, and we need to invest more energy and effort at the grassroots level in fostering an environment in which such relationships can materialize and deepen,” he said.

Green added that people must be willing to reject false connections and discriminatory rhetoric in the media.

“As we speak out against Islamophobia, and as we build relationships across religious boundaries, we must never lose sight of the larger goal — to create a movement that will dismantle the systemic discrimination faced by Muslim Americans,” Green said.

Rising Hate

American Muslims see http://aboutislam.net/muslim-issues/america/us-muslim-group-blames-trump-increasing-hate/ - rising Islamophobia as a major obstacle to their daily life.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a leading Muslim civil rights and advocacy group, said that anti-Muslim discrimination incidents and hate crimes increased in the third quarter of 2018 by 83 and 21 percent respectively, compared with the first quarter.

During 2018, CAIR documented more than 1,000 reports of potential bias incidents. The numbers include situations involving various government agencies.

Islamophobia is not confined to online groups. It leaks across public life

This ugly form of racism shapes the way Muslims are perceived and treated

n Friday morning, as https://www.theguardian.com/world/christchurch-shooting - the news from Christchurch was still rolling across radio bulletins, Sir Mark Rowley, the former head of counter-terrorism at the Met, was commenting on the horror on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. Fifty Muslims had been brutally murdered, and 48 seriously injured. For 17 horrifying minutes, a white supremacist terrorist unloaded round after round of bullets into men, women and children.

Islamophobia was undoubtedly real and on the rise and being propagated online, said Rowley. But, he went on to quibble, https://www.theguardian.com/news/islamophobia - Islamophobia wasn’t racism. To conflate the two was, he claimed, “clumsy thinking”.

The remark was treated as a random aside, made off the cuff, and left entirely unchallenged. Why? Because, it would seem, even on a morning when we’re reeling, devastated and trying to process terrorist violence in mosques, it is fair game to diminish the lived reality of Muslims. Which isn’t me being dramatic; it is simply a fact.

Islamophobia is racism: it’s not a coincidence that the majority of Muslims are not white and have roots in formerly colonised countries. It’s not an exaggeration to say that racist stereotypes abound to the point where you don’t even have to be a Muslim to be attacked as one (just ask a Sikh navigating the world post-9/11).

Islamophobia does not simply exist on the unpalatable mass of the internet. It’s not the preserve of rightwing extremists whom we write off as online nutters. It leaks across public life, in our institutions and our media, to form a pernicious feedback loop and almost nobody cares. If in doubt, consider the lonely figure cut by Sayeeda Warsi, https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/mar/06/crisis-what-crisis-senior-tories-shrug-off-islamophobia-warning - whose calls for an inquiry into the documented Islamophobia within the Conservative party are blithely ignored by government.

Remember a referendum campaign won on lies, https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/jun/16/nigel-farage-defends-ukip-breaking-point-poster-queue-of-migrants - fear-mongering about mass immigration from refugees , from https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/jul/16/michael-gove-admits-leave-was-wrong-to-fuel-immigration-fears - Turkey , from anyone with https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/feb/18/angela-smith-apologises-for-funny-tinge-remark - “a funny tinge” . Bear in mind the dogged work of https://www.theguardian.com/news/2018/oct/18/miqdaad-versi-very-polite-fight-against-british-media-islamophobia - Miqdaad Versi , of the Muslim Council of Britain, politely lodging complaints against thousands of Islamophobic stories in the press, often upheld by the Independent Press Standards Organisation, and barely anyone batting an eyelid. Given the hysterical state of national debate, it is either disingenuous or profoundly stupid to claim that the daily drip-feed of Islamophobia, which is now so normalised in Britain as to be hardly remarkable, doesn’t significantly shape the way Muslims are perceived and treated.

Words matter. So do images. It’s not for nothing that the atrocity in https://www.theguardian.com/world/christchurch - Christchurch was preceded by a 74-page manifesto published online and then streamed on Facebook Live. If a white supremacist can understand this power, it’s not beyond the editor who chose to publish a picture of him as a toddler on its front page, rather than using that space to humanise his victims.

It certainly can’t escape the commentators who have made their bread and butter demonising and dehumanising Muslims and are expressing shock and grief at how their bile manifests in the real world.

Both the Daily Mail and the Mirror chose to gorge on the terrorist’s brutality, and broadcast his footage to their audience until they were shamed into removing it. This callous lack of humanity simply would never occur were the victims not Muslim and their lives already so othered, so seemingly disposable and without value. How did this angelic little boy grow up to be a mass killer, asks the Mirror. What did his grandmother think of her “good boy” grandson, probes the Daily Mail. Frankly, I don’t care. I don’t want to glorify his name. I’m not yet ready for Newsnight choosing to choose to https://inews.co.uk/news/uk/bbc-defends-allowing-generation-identity-discuss-new-zealand-terror-attack/ - give a platform to a white fascist to discuss the massacre, under the hollow pursuit of free speech.

It’s an exhausted cliche to point out the hypocritical differences in the way the Christchurch terrorist is being covered by our press and what we learned about, say, https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2013/dec/19/lee-rigby-killing-woolwich-verdict-convicted-murder - the killers of the British soldier Lee Rigby https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2013/dec/19/lee-rigby-killing-woolwich-verdict-convicted-murder - . Or the 7/7 bombers.

While it is, of course, a legitimate journalistic endeavour to understand how and why the gunman did what he did, humanising a mass murderer desperate for notoriety should not be the main focus of our attention. If he weren’t an angry white man, it wouldn’t be. It’s not too much to ask that care and empathy be focused on the victims. Their families. Their lives.

Combating Islamophobia with Marketing and Design

With the rise of Islamophobia on one side, and extremism on the other, Islam has been cast as irrational, incompatible with modern civilization, and inherently violent.

This has put Muslims in a defensive position in which they constantly have to justify their convictions, while fighting off the natural doubts and insecurities that arise from such a climate.

Yaqeen Institute has built a content marketing engine to address these relevant topics head-on. Using articles, infographics, podcasts, videos, web and mobile applications, and a robust social media presence, Yaqeen Institute has been able to proliferate content that dispels myths and misconceptions associated with Islam and Muslims while simultaneously equipping Muslims with the education to participate in the public discourse.
